When an evil wizard writes a 6000-page book to bore the townspeople to death, it's up to you to take the damn thing and return it FROM WHENCE IT CAME.
A modern roguelike with old-school graphics
Equin 2: The Warren Peace, developed by DXF Games, is a roguelike that brings the best of the genre without most of its obtuse characteristics (like super complicated controls and unidentified items). It feels very modern, despite the charming retro presentation, and it’s a great improvement over the first game – the field of view is bigger, there’s much more variety and the humor is sharper than ever.
It feels just right
If you’re at least a bit familiar with roguelikes, you might know that there are some games that people consider to be “Coffeebreak Roguelikes”, or titles that are quick to play a full run. The other side are of course roguelikes that feel massive in length. Equin 2 is sitting right in the middle: it isn’t super quick to finish, but it won’t take something like 10+ hours for a single run. It feels just right, with a nice difficulty level, which is not too hard but if you get too confident, you’ll die easily.
You get what you pay for
With four classes (Warrior, Thief, Wizard, Cleric) and six different areas, the price is justified for the amount of content you get. The game isn’t perfect by any means – the lack of a fullscreen mode, the hit or miss procedural generation and a single save slot are the downsides – but overall it's a nice game for veterans of the genre and even better for those that want to start exploring the fantastic world of roguelikes. Also, the game keeps getting new content and updates, so that's another plus. By the way, there's also a demo, if you want to see how it plays - check the store page to download it. Pros: * Easy to play and hard to master * Nice twist on the traditional roguelike formula * Pleasant graphics and soundtrack * Fair difficulty – challenging without being frustrating * The humor is spot on and better than ever * It gets constant updates, including new content * It has that 'one more run' feel Cons: * No fullscreen mode * Only a single save slot * Procedural generation could be better. Be ready to face some dead ends
Better presentation than Equin 1. The improvements to vision distance and shops are nice. The flavor text is still amusing. Very much worth a buy. The lack of controller support (Equin 1 had it) is a bummer but nothing that can't be solved with Joy2Key or similar programs due to the simple controls. Buy it!
Equin 2 is a great sequel. It builds on the original in every way while still providing that classic hit of traditional Rogue like game play. I really enjoy games made by DXF Games and will continue to do so for many years as they keep getting better and better! I highly recommend this game
*Disclaimer: Beta tester* I'm in the game. :) More depth, more humor, more interaction, still simple to pick up and play. Level terrain is more varied, open(generally), and interactive. Character progression allows for a little more player choice by allowing you to choose between two skills at levels 3 and 6 (with bonus stat choices scattered about as well). The overall list of equipment had been toned down, but now everything has +1 to +3 versions to find or upgrade yourself with upgrade dust. Weapons even get runic variants adding special effects. It's been a fun ride seeing the game from it's rough, but solid foundation, to it's polished finish. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I have over the past few months.
Eat some flowers. Catch the plague. Beat a zombie to death with a different zombie's leg. Drink mosquito larvae. Get kicked out of the inn for having the plague. See an orc's butt. Die from putting on a magic ring and phasing into a wall.
Fast paced way to induce TBI damage via my desk. 8/10 would recommend.
nice coffeebreak roguelike with polished retro presentation and lots of cute and humorous details fast jrpg combat works well as an alternative to tile bumping possibly my favorite casual/accessible roguelike
UPDATE 1/10/22: The developer has been making some consistent updates - see the comments on this review for more! Equin 2 is a bit of a mixed bag: it presents an interesting new twist on the traditional roguelike genre, but I fear that it simultaneously makes a few tragic missteps that invoke some frustration along the way. It feels largely familiar: grid-based maps, turn-based movement, and randomized dungeons. However, combat is delivered via a traditional menu-style turn-based system on a separate screen. Combat is serviceable - you'll have 4-6 skills to use at any given time, so there's not a surplus of depth here. The fundamentals feel nice enough, but I feel there's room for improvement in two key areas: 1. RNG and difficulty spikes come absolutely out of nowhere, blind-siding the player. I had multiple runs in which I was progressing nicely, not having particular difficulty with any enemy, and was then suddenly thrust into battle with a new enemy which effectively killed me in one hit. It just felt very unnatural and unfair in a way that I couldn't have been prepared for. 2. The joy of finding loot is largely diminished here - there aren't many randomized drops, so searching containers and rooms ends up feeling like a waste of time. Additionally, this is highly subjective, but I strongly disliked the music - it just feels thematically inappropriate. If you're looking for a fresh twist on traditional roguelikes and are willing to stomach some frustration, pick Equin 2 up. I'd recommend doing it when it's on sale, though. This game is a lot of fun and is clearly an all-round improvement from the first game, it is easy to learn and has a good amount of depth below the surface. The balancing of certain items could be improved, and when playing as a wizard if you pick the ice spell the rest of the game becomes rather easy. It also seems like money is a little too easy to get as I rarely found myself needing more of it, and the punishment for running out of food is perhaps not as severe as it should be (considering your food level is reset every area). Also some more options (like the ability to change sound and music volume separately) would be appreciated. But overall the game is really good and a definite recommend considering how low the price is.
