This short game is fun and leaves you wanting more. The story set in the future, the year 2273 when everything was covered with water and people starts to live in cities surrounded by a glass globe. 28 years later, a girl named Hope who lives in Pearl city, returned home and found out her father been missing for three days. She then decided to take a visit to his lab which he works in with another scientist. You'll discover many secrets and characters involving this disappearance. I enjoyed the puzzles in this game, they are unique and different from any other game I've played. One of them they gave you a pile of items and you have to replace them in their right place by checking the shadow (or dust) on the table. There are not many hidden objects scenes, but the few we have are very well made! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1388758747 The art of this game is so pretty, especially the areas and the puzzles! There is a map but sadly there is no fast traveling option- however you can only explore an area at times, if you are in the apartment area, you'll only have two others rooms to explore, once you are done the game will automatically take you to the next area and the story will proceed which means there is no backtracking at all. the map looks nice. I've noticed that when you click on the hint button and the item you want is in another area, a small window will pop up for you to click and fast travel to that area. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1389257497 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1388736728 I didn't like the journal, although it gives objectives and is quite useful I have wished for it to keep the progress of the story and the backstory of the characters. The voice-over did a good job, music was fitting too Pros: +Beautiful artwork. +Average story. +Well done voice over +Variety of puzzles. +Well drawn hidden object scenes. (But they are few) +Good soundtracks. Cons: -No fast traveling map. (But there is no backtracking) -No journal. -Short game. -No steam achievements. It took me two hours and a half to finish the game, quite short for its price so I recommend you get it on discount, they do pretty good discounts on steam. It is worth trying for casual gamers. I enjoyed the puzzles so much.
𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑒𝑤𝑠 𝑐𝘩𝑒𝑐𝑘 𝑚𝑦 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑝𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝐹𝑒𝑒𝑛𝑎'𝑠 𝐶𝘩𝑜𝑖𝑐𝑒
Most of the HOGs I've played so far seem to recycle over and over a few core themes, adding all sorts of variations though: paranormal occurrences, murder investigations, demons that want to rule the world, corrupted priests, asylums etc. In that regard, Embrace of Ocean: Story of Hope brings a new flavor to the HOG world with it’s rather unique futuristic, sci-fi setting. In the year 2273 AD, all the continents have been submerged and covered by water. The story starts 28 years later when a young girl named Hope Blue returns to her home - the ruins of the underwater city of Athens - only to discover that her father is missing and that the world is shaken by a series of earthquakes and other global calamities. Soon afterwards, she finds a hologram message from her dad, asking her to find his work and studies and to secure them, but at the same time forbidding her to look for him. As you probably expect, she will not stop after finding his research, but will also uncover the secret behind the natural calamities and also the location where his father was kept hostage. I must admit, I enjoyed the storyline a lot. It's different, it's entertaining, it's interesting. But it's rather short. After the 2h - 2h'30' of gameplay, I was left wanting more. The story is nice, but the ending was rather average and very predictable. I would have enjoyed seeing more of the futuristic gadgets featured in the game: more holograms, more floating cars, more robots. Sadly, the ending doesn't leave much space for a sequel, so that's pretty much all we'll get from this beautiful world. The art is extremely beautiful. With skillfully hand drawn objects, the HOG scenes are very detailed and fun to play; the puzzles are also well designed and of average difficulty. Overall, it's a very relaxing and enjoyable game. There is a mini-map which helps you orient yourself, but sadly it doesn't offer fast travel. The HOG scenes are not highlighted in any special way, not even in the Casual difficulty mode because they are in fact individual locations (rooms) of the game. And the journal serves more of a tracker for the current quest rather than a summary of what happened until that moment. The asking price of $9.99 might be a bit too steep considering the length of the game and the fact that it doesn't have other Steam features (cards, achievements), nor collectibles or an extra chapter. However, it's probably worth buying it for the story itself and the unique setting, Sci-Fi HOGs being very rare on the market. Aves Games seems to be a very promising developer and I'm excited to try their future projects too.
WTF?
More reviews on our Curator Page Originally released in 2017, Embrace of Ocean: Story of Hope is the hard work of a small European studio, Aves Games, that finally launches on Steam. Over a hundred years in the future, with planet Earth overrun by water, humanity prospered beyond today’s possibilities, surviving in space and underwater cities. Although the main knowledge assumes a massive asteroid collided with Earth, some recent discoveries point towards a different reality. We play as Blue Hope, a young woman whom, after receiving a message about her father disappearing, quickly travels to his last seen location; City of Pearl, the perfect example of humanity’s progress living underwater. Her father, Mr. Blue is a respected scientist, and close friend of the local Mayor, however, as young Mss Hope searches for clues, strange encounters and misleading evidences may prove an unpredictable turn of events. What really happened to her father, and what caused him to disappear? Embrace of Ocean: Story of Hope is a thrilling mystery adventure, with a good storyline that is well worth your time. The narrative is on par with many other games, with a decent plot to follow, and in a way, does a good job at keeping players motivated through the events. The world is well portrayed, with details, newspapers, and other factors that build and solidifies the story, events and history all around. As gameplay goes, it might push some out of their fun, as It’s not your typical modern approach, and is much reminiscent of classic adventure games with Hidden Object elements. Players will quickly realize the mouse cursor does not identify areas of interest, instead, one must find them by clicking. Other interactions are displayed, but a large amount of them aren’t, and surprisingly, it doesn’t change much, as the whole game direction is quite fluid. To follow on the journey, we have a map and a journal, but I feel those were included just because it’s tradition, and not essential. Map only works as a main story pinpoint location, to give a wide notion of the events, and fast travel between locations is not available. The Journal on the other hand, has just the main object written, and nothing else. It’s not possible to go through its pages either. As expected, Hidden Object Scenes are available, in a very simple quantity, and players go through each scene once, although some are kept available to pick later objects as part of the environment, and not in a full search scene. The puzzles are interesting and entertaining, they surely are driven from many others we’ve seen, but are incrediblywell integrated within the game’s style, which end up being very original in their own way. Visually, there’s clearly originality, not only in the concept, but in the overall presentation. Character renders are somehow generic, not due to the 2D hand-drawn design, but more regarding their interaction. Maybe the art direction should have taken another approach, maybe a comic book style would suit favorably in this case. Locations and backgrounds are really well done, with some 3D aesthetics, and in some rare instances, we can spot that real objects were used as 3D models. It’s not a negative point, in fact, the quality stands out regarding environments, and even in the Hidden Object Scenes. Cutscenes are also 2D using hand-drawn models, but they work well, and the animations are good! Overall, the visual presentation is quite good, and the only negative or I should say, less appealing factor, is the generic font used for in-game texting. It’s not a problem whatsoever, and it might sound like me complaining, but it’s just looks bland! Technically speaking, Embrace of Ocean: Story of Hope could have been improved significantly. It runs at a native 720p, but upscaling just fine to 1920x1080 resolutions. However, for a 2017 game, there’s no excuse for a game to be locked at 30fps, and does nothing positive for the experience,as players notice a “slow-down”. Well, that slow down is the framerate! The lack of settings don’t help much either, and those could come in hand. Voice overs are included for every character that interacts with the protagonist, and their work is pretty much average but very welcoming. The soundtrack is minimalistic but provides a couple of interesting neo-classic melodies! With intuitive and fun Mini-Games that range from easy to medium difficulty, this 3 hour adventure is definitely recommended, but only if you are willing to accept the 30fps experience. Nonetheless, a fun adventure with a great storyline, events and well built plot.
Preaty average game made worst by spelling mistakes.
This casual point-and-click adventure is barely playable and most gamers should avoid it. Firstly, the English translation is a total disaster. The grammar is almost always wrong, words are mistranslated, and even the English voice actors seem barely literate (one of them cannot pronounce the word "mineral" correctly, what?). The translation is sometimes comically bad, but the comedy quickly wears off. Secondly, the game engine is a clunky and buggy mess. It's very hard to get things done in the game, and sometimes this even gets in the way of completing objectives. That said, there is a hidden gem underneath. Despite being a fairly short game, its world is beautifully realized and there is a deep background story, which is worthy of a much grander game. But let's not get too excited even about that one bright point! The potential is squandered by bad storytelling. For example: an entire sequence involves you trying to make your uncle a cup of coffee just the way he likes it. This "quest" has nothing to do with the adventure, the story, or anything else, and is a good example of how this story is narrated.
Not your ordinary HOG, but I liked it. Artistic scenes, nice music and a variety of puzzles. A few quirks, but I'd buy it again (was on sale for three dollars). Spaceebo.
The graphics in this game are great and the story is interesting. A few spelling mistakes in the dialog but nothing to worry about there. Sometimes it was a little hard to figure out exactly what to do, but I guess that's the point of a hidden object game. However, a chest of drawers that tells me its empty every time I click on it, and then suddenly has a piece of paper in a drawer later on in the story did leave me somewhat confused. Great game though, despite a couple of very minor flaws. The one achievement in the game is a bit weird - you get it right at the beginning of the game...would make more sense to gain it as a reward for completion??
