Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires (DW8E) isn't a bad game by any means, but it is a fine example of Koei Tecmo's monetization that's been annoying me over the years. Like Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Complete Edition (DW8XLCE), unfortunately, DW8E is a compromised port which uses Playstation 3 textures (instead of Playstation 4) and therefore, looks worse than its console counterpart. It also shares some other annoyances of DW8XLCE like not being able to swap B/A or Circle/Square for Cancel/Accept inputs, and it persistently displays only keyboard prompts even if you use a controller. Personally, I'm willing to ignore the 'compromised' aspect of the port. My issue with DW8E is that, unlike DW8XLCE, it is very light on content and a significant amount of which is relevant to gameplay (like Edit Parts, Scenarios) is instead sold as DLCs. The "Empires" series is practically more about role-playing (create-your-own-adventure) with the Create-A-Warrior (CAW) feature being the primary reason most players will buy Empires for. Hence, Edit Parts are especially relevant since character creation is a major aspect of the game. Although DW8E does offer a lot of edit parts out-of-the-box, it's important to look at the value of the DLCs and question whether they match their asking price - because they cost a significant portion of the base game price and offers so little that they might as well be part of the base game. As I alluded to at the start, I don't think DW8E is a bad game. But it certainly isn't a good port, nor a good package and is so blatant about nickel-and-diming its prospective buyers that I don't think I can recommend it. In any case, DW8XLCE is a far better game and package that you should consider over this - unless you're specifically looking for a role-playing experience using your own custom creations.

I love this game. Honestly still better than 9 in many aspects. Though yes the port is bad so you will have to go in and remap your controller to fit the game
I love dynasty warriors but the way they did this is messed up cant use a controller without 10 levels of heck. graphics are so glitchy its terrible.the game play is freezy ALOT more than not.i was so dissappointed in this version. and no english voice overs has always been a down side but easily over looked with amazing gameplay and battles. This one has none of the good parts and all the bad even some i didnt know existed.
how do you play a game that doesnt read inputs from your keyboard nor controller? it downloaded while i was sleeping and I woke up with 3 hours on record. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME

One of the worst ports I've ever seen. Doesn't show the correct inputs when using controller, doesn't go higher than 1080p so have fun with that if we're on a 1440p monitor or higher, and half the time it completely ignores my inputs, making the game borderline unplayable. Frankly ridiculous, given how much they're charging for this game, especially for the DLCs. Koei could at least pretend to have any respect for their consumers.
Honestly one of my favorite Dynasty Warriors Empires games. The Scenario Editor and empire modes are great in this and the create a character has an awesome selection of parts, enough to make most any character. It also runs on a computer that isn't the top of the line.
Controller does not work.
This is my comfort game, and I play it on multiple consoles. My wife and I call it the "taking over China" game, and we play it together on rainy days. I have dumped so many hours creating custom characters/factions and pitting them against each other, and whether you play as a ruler or just fight battles under the computer's ruler, the game is just so damn satisfying. I feel like this was the peak of the franchise.
