I don't think I've ever made it far past the first year of any farming sim game. For me, it's simply not enough to do repetitive tasks, expanding or optimizing my farm, without some sort of structure or external encouragement. I get tired of repeating dialogues and gifting people stuff just to increase their relationship meter and unlock scenes that oftentimes don't even have anything to do with me. Wylde Flowers feels like it understood all my specific peeves with the genre and gave me the perfect answer. I just adore the narrative design in this game. Despite what you might expect from a 'cozy game', the story has very real stakes and honors them accordingly. What I mean by this is that the main story is far from a typical 'fix up the town' storyline, and the betrayals, lies, and secrets that come to light have real impact. Not only do you get to see other characters grapple with their changing relationships through dialogue and sidequests, but the game lets you decide how the main character, Tara, feels and acts to salvage or end these relationships as well. (Shoutout to the
Westley
romance plotline!) I love how much the magical setting is utilized in gameplay, integrating mechanics you'd expect from a farming game in such a fresh way. You fast-travel with a magic broom (of course!) for the price of a potion that gets easier to acquire as you progress. Find that the day is passing too quickly? Instead of going to toggle a speed setting in a menu, your character can alter time and space using magic in-game (for a price). In other games, you may feel the need to schedule your crop planting to fit within the season's calendar. Well, in Wylde Flowers, you're magic! You commune directly with the seasons! I won't spoil it for new players, but not having to worry about planting your crops within the calendar is just one example of the refreshing ways Wylde Flowers plays with farming sim game expectations. What else? All the characters have very solid voice acting. They're wonderfully diverse, and that's reflected in the game's cooking options. I appreciate the way the game deals with vegetarianism/farm animals. I love the romance content. I love the crafting system. I love playing this game. Even after the main story is over, there is a ton more story content that I'm stil exploring and enjoying. Seriously. You should give it a try.
This was what I wanted from so many cozy farming sims. Something different, deep, story focused. I recommend it but that comes with a deep warning. This review comes with some spoilers but ones that I think are necessary. One of the things that made me instantly addicted waws the story underneath day to day farming. I was so distraught after year one the credits roll and while you continue, it sucked the enthusiasm I had for year two. The second thing was that I had no warning, when I could influence the end of seasons, that I would miss events. That was a rude shock I did not like at all. A lot rides on you *knowing* how random events are supposed to occur that as a first time play through was disappointing. I am hoping a second play through with that foreknowldge makes this more enjoyable because the story telling elements were magical. I still recommend this, I just recommend you take it slowly, enjoy every day, and if you care about future events, look them up to understand how they're triggered so you don't miss them. An unfortunate necessity to an otherwise, beautiful and well executed game.
⭐ 8/10 - Came for My Girlfriend, Stayed for the Witchcraft and Coffee Empire If you had told me a year ago that I'd be spending dozens of hours playing a cozy farming game about a witch running a farm in a small town, I probably would've laughed. Then my girlfriend convinced me to play Wylde Flowers. Turns out she was right. What surprised me most was how much heart the game has. The characters feel genuinely likable, the voice acting is excellent, and the story has far more depth than I expected. What starts as a relaxing farming sim slowly unfolds into a charming tale about family, friendship, community, and a healthy amount of magical shenanigans. The daily gameplay loop is incredibly relaxing. Growing crops, raising animals, gathering ingredients, brewing potions, and helping townsfolk never felt like a chore. The game does a great job respecting your time while still giving you plenty to work toward. That said, I accidentally discovered that Fairhaven's economy is apparently held together by duct tape and optimism. Very early on I started mass-producing and selling coffee. A lot of coffee. An unreasonable amount of coffee. At some point I stopped being a farmer and became a caffeine-fueled economic superpower. While the rest of the town was worrying about magical mysteries, I was personally responsible for enough coffee exports to crash several neighboring markets. Money quickly stopped being a concern after that. Despite completely breaking the economy, I still had an amazing time. The writing kept me invested, the seasonal story progression was satisfying, and I genuinely looked forward to seeing what happened next with the characters. The reason it lands at an 8/10 instead of higher is that some of the gameplay systems can feel a bit simple, and once you figure out how to make money efficiently, a lot of the progression challenge disappears. But honestly, that's not really why I was playing by the end. I was playing because I cared about the town and the people in it. 8/10 I started playing because my girlfriend asked me to. I kept playing because Fairhaven was charming, the characters were great, and because I had become the wealthiest coffee baron in the history of magical agriculture.
This game is just amazing. I love love love cosy games and this is honestly one of the best.
This is exactly the cozy game I was looking for! Runs super smooth even on this old laptop.
Did not expect when I picked up this game to spend nearly 100 hrs on one play through! The gameplay loop is simple, but oh so addictive. The island and its citizens are charming, and the mystery and small town drama is fun to get lost in. Definitely recommend to any fan of cozy games or urban fantasy!
Simply the best foraging game on Steam that has an incredibly captivating cast of characters you long to engage with and talk to every day. The story is also a joy to go experience, alongside with the amazing music. The 'witchy' sounding tunes are superb. Optimization is great too! Studio Drydock should really be proud of what they were able accomplish here. Bruno, priceless dude <3 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3765602206
This truly the best game I ever played. I was so immersed into the story line and completing tasks and getting to know the story in and out. It made me feels so happy to play and always looked forward to playing it. It makes incredibly sad that I completed the game and no other updates to this game will be done, but now I am in the hunt for a game like this. This game is top tier! You won't regret playing it its truly the best game ever and will recommend everyone to play this game.
This is a really nicely designed farm game. The characters are nice and the story is engaging. Highly recommend this one if you like farming games.
