About
Prepare for the deepest, most intricate simulation of a world that has ever been created.

Not just generated geometry -- a whole simulated world. Generated rise and fall of civilizations, personalities, creatures, cultures, etc. Infinite hours of gameplay.
Now with beautiful pixel graphics!
Learn the basics with in-game tutorials
A lifetime “living” project - created/updated since 2003, with no end in sight
Generate your unique world and manage a bustling colony of dwarves, even as they probably mine towards their eventual demise.
A new endless hobby, just for you!

The legendary Dwarf Fortress is now on Steam! Build a fortress and try to help your dwarves survive, despite threats of starvation, dragons, and madness.

In this complex construction/management/roguelike simulation, every generated world brings a unique challenge, whether it’s dwarves with their own simulated personalities or aquifers. Observe what makes your civilization fall into eventual decline, and learn for next time… until something else inevitably goes wrong.
The combat model includes skills, body parts, material properties, aimed attacks, wrestling, pain, nausea, various poison effects, and much more.
It’s difficult to convey the depth of the generation. Hundreds of animals and monsters, many of which are randomly created for each world, as well as generated poetry, musical forms, instruments, and dances for your dwarves to practice and perform. A dynamic weather model tracks wind, humidity, and air masses to create fronts, clouds, storms, and blizzards. Over two hundred rock and mineral types can appear, in their proper geological environments.
Remember: Losing is fun!

This is still good old Dwarf Fortress, but with graphics support and music provided. A few bells and whistles won’t change its essence.
Classic Dwarf Fortress mod-artist Jacob "Ironhand" Bowman collaborated with artists Carolyn Jong and Neoriceisgood to create an all-new sprite pack for the game, which they continue to add to regularly.
Dwarf Fortress also has hours of music in a two-volume soundtrack by Dabu and Simon Swerwer, including tracks in the Dwarvish language!
It's never been easier to start playing! We've improved the new player experience with the addition of tutorials to guide you through building your first fort and keeping your dwarves happy.

Command your dwarves as they search for wealth in their generated mountain. Your dwarves will need a steady supply of food and beer, but they’ll also need your guidance in surviving attacks from hostile civilizations, the wilderness, or even the dead.
Craft treasures and furnitures from various materials
Establish a barony and support the increasingly demanding nobility
Read your dwarves’ thoughts to keep them happy
Build floodgates to divert water for farming, and/or prevent magma mishaps
Build structures and watch your dwarves discover and build their culture, like taverns, libraries, temples, honey, wax, pottery, animal training, bookbinding, and more.
Go anywhere! Explore any civilization, earn a reputation, and recruit followers to join you
Experience your fortress and the simulation in a new, more embodied way
Explore mythical dungeons to find magical items, artifacts, and fill your quest journal
Hints of mythology and magic as a start of future simulation enrichment to come
An additional hour of music from Dabu and Simon Swerwer, presented as a second volume of the original soundtrack

The original inspiration for RimWorld, Prison Architect, Minecraft and more.
One of the first video games acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York
Updated for over 16 years by two brothers, Tarn “Toady One” and Zach “Threetoe” Adams, and with the support of Kitfox Games since 2020.

This game allows you to take control of a group of stumpy alcoholics in their stubborn efforts to avoid sobriety and lead them to greatness. Lots of memes out there are all about how "losing is fun" in Dwarf Fortress, and while that may indeed be the case, it isn't the full story, just like how the difficulty curve of Dwarf Fortress being one of the hardest games out there is also a bit misleading. To put it simply, Dwarf Fortress has an incredibly high skill ceiling, but also a low skill floor. Dig down, figure out farming, brewing, basic crafting, and tavern construction and you've got all the basics down. 975 hours in and I've barely touched the channeling tool, barely made use of water, never even touched lava, never got adamantine, have built easily a dozen capitals, many without even getting into the concepts of machines or siege weapons. There's a LOT of complexity in Dwarf Fortress that people mistake for extreme difficulty, but you need not be afraid of this as you can, and likely will, learn more and more over time. A few quick tutorials and you'll be set for your first fortress. You'll want to learn what more you can do and with each tutorial you'll get new ideas and want to- no, NEED to build bigger, better, and DEEPER. What you need in your life is below. A word of caution: This game will test the limits of your ADD medication. It is an autist's wet dream and an OCD's nightmare. If you haven't upgraded your CPU in a while, I recommend the small - medium map size, don't change your embark tile size, and for the love of GOD, neuter your cats. Your frames will thank me later.
There's really nothing more to say that hasn't been said a thousand times about Dwarf Fortress. Buy it, you'll get your money's worth and more. This magnificient autism project deserves your patronage.
Dwarf Fortress is the most complex game I've ever played and I find it both intimidating and endlessly fascinating. If you've ever wanted a colony builder+grand strategy+life sim+wargame, Dwarf Fortress is all of that and more, in my opinion. The endlessly entertaining emergent stories that come up in this game make it replayable in the extreme, and I'm always finding new things I'd never known about.
Dwarf Fortress in an absolute gem and a piece of modern art that should be regarded as one of the most unique games in history. It is a dream or a vision more than a game, in fact, many would argue it is barely a game and some points would be true. The UI is barely there, many systems are convoluted and unintuitive, important settings are hidden and the graphics are what people in the year 1980 imagined video games to look like by the end of the millennium. The graphics is what turns many people off, but this was somewhat remedied with this release and its premium graphic pack. But if you are interested in delving into the deep dark, I would strongly suggest to use the original ASCII graphics. After few hours of learning which symbol means what, it will suddenly click and you will be dragged into the dream of Tarn Adams, kicking and screaming for more. Dwarf Fortress is truly addictive and also brings back the better parts of the fantasy genre, where your own mind fills the gaps and gives the creatures a voice and artpieces a shape and an emotion. Try it.
Dwarf Fortress is a cult classic that has captured many hours of my time and influenced the creation of many famous games. Tarn Adams put his heart and soul into a free product that I love and many in the world do as well. Though I cannot recommend the paid version of this game because it has been many years since it went for sale, a small fortune has been made by a pair of brothers living in their mom's house, and not much progress has been made to some of the core promises that were being made about modernizing the look and feel of the antiquated free version. While the roadmap is large, and the code base being ported over into the "new UI" is a seemingly daunting task, the point remains that the Adam's brothers made a conscious decision to create a paid product and open themselves to the court of public opinion. That they are taking money and executing on their promise to deliver results! I do not care that the code base is alleged to be over 700,000 lines, that they were self taught, or built a large library of spaghetti. The passion project that brought joy to many is not license to take my money and run! What matters is that they are bolting that spaghetti slop into a garbage interface that is unintuitive, bugged, and leaving a lot to the modding community that builds UI through DF Hack. My game crashes frequently, the same culprits being opening doors, movement, and dialogue. In fact, this game is largely unplayable without DF Hack and third party utilities, unless you like memorizing hundreds of key combinations that don't make sense. Which was always a gripe I had in the original DF, but hey, that was free. What's more, a lot of the features of the free version are simply not "ported" into the paid version. What you get is a watered down version of dwarf fortress with a really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ UI that takes way too many clicks out of your mouse's life. It's been 2 1/2 years at the time of this review and we are still waiting on many adventure mode features from the free version and DF hack had to champion many features left out of the UI in fortress mode. The Adams brothers have no excuse on this, because they went public with a sale, and the progress is stagnant, the product sub-par, and the bugs, glitches, and lack of content going years unchanged. They are swamped and should have the funds to hire help. They sold over 600,000 copies in the first 24 hours it went on sale! They won't do it because Tarn is seemingly not a trusting fellow and lords over his mountain of spaghetti code like Smeagol and the one ring. He is sitting on a dumpster fire of code and needs to realize his company owns the IP of Dwarf Fortress and letting people sign NDA's and see and work on the code base is in his interest. Tarn is probably more embarrassed he is using magic numbers that only he knows what they are for. I'm old enough to have built applications with magic arrays and get criticized by me peers for doing so! Save yourself a few bucks and play the free version, it has way more content.
This game is a deep and obscure, broad and with obvious oversights, complex and unbalanced colony simulation similar to Rimworld but in a 3D world and much older. I don't recommend the game because of its outstanding and longlasting issues that I don't expect to get fixed in the coming years. Economic values are badly balanced. During embark, you can take a cloth bag for a certain price, or a unit of sand for much cheaper that will come in a cloth bag that you then get for free. Instead of taking barrels, take drinks, which will come in free barrels. The list goes on. Trading with caravans also suffers from bad design. You can easily buy out the whole caravan with just a couple of barrels of prepared food or a bunch of wooden bolts, that are easy to make. Taking about bolts, when they are fired and don't break, they are individual items and can't be stacked again. If you ask the caravan to bring stones and ores, they bring only a few and nothing else. The caravans are not designed to maximize profit. So no, you can't roleplay an alliance with humans where they supply you with plenty of ore and you pay them with steel armor and weaponry from your mighty dwarfen magma forges. The interface has become better in this version of the game than it is in the free version. But it's still bad and unintuitive. The developers should observe people new to the game to learn with what they struggle and to figure out ways to improve the UI and design. The UI can also get stuck and refuse some input sometimes. The game doesn't force goals on you. You can set them yourselves. But many obvious goals like survival in hard environment is either easy or impossible and economic goals lack the necessary design features. So you can try to keep your dwarfs happy. But they will get unhappy for unintuitive reasons and the game won't make it easy for you to figure out what is going wrong. So you try to make a mighty army. Good. Get some steel, build armor and weapons, get barracks, assign all dwarfs but farmers, cooks, and clothes to squads and let them train. Done. The game is improving. But at the speed of a glacier. If some issues of the above are fixed, years will have passed. All of them won't even be fixed in a decade. And the issues I listed are just the tip of the iceberg. There are people in the community who could name more and more serious issues. I feel bad not recommending it because clearly so much love has gone into many aspects of the game but it also lacks so much care in many others. In 2035 I'll revisit this review to see if the game has improved.
Janky ass game with janky ass mechanics with janky ass U.I Nothing in this game is intuitive, the newcomer experience is the most garbage ass experience that I had in quite some time. I really want to like the game, but when it becomes an obligation to have a reddit/wiki page open just to decipher the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ U.I you know that you are in a ♥♥♥♥ show. Good luck to find a answer to when the workshop simply stops working and the U.I of it stops existing, good luck to resolve the problems that comes when ALL workers stop working and there's no way to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ resolve unless you download DFHACK. It could be such an amazing game, but instead it's this maze that people swear it's and incredible game because they have spent so many hours in it, that they can't even notice the stockholm syndrome
New player experience is very limited, i wish i didnt have to watch a 10 hr video tutorial series to play. Honestly it's overhyped and the UI really needs improving.
