It's the game you remember, launched with a convenient and non-obtrusive launcher (allowing the racking up of a lot of extra hours... lol) with some options to select, other D&D DOS games from the era if you own them - played via DOSBox. I am experienced with DOSBox, there are some oddities with that software in particular mostly involving if you are playing in windowed which I am used to, so this didn't bother me. Played a few games, one I set to be pretty "difficult" in terms of challenge. It's a cool kingdom builder but it's definitely showing some age. A: Building construction site limit. You'll probably hit this mid-game, and by end-game, you will more than likely be capped on funds due to it. Not a big deal, you're liable to just be steamrolling at this point. B: Few bugs that can end the game. I think I found a solution to those, they seem to involve the enemies building bridges to reach you over bodies of water. Finished a save that was otherwise bugging repeatedly by preventing them from camping bridges and it was very repeatable. If you HAVEN'T played this game before, I'm not sure how well it would hold up. I think it's a cool blast from the past but I vividly remember the game and makes for some great nostalgia. Cool gameplay, a modern version without all of the limitations imposed by the era would be pretty amazing - and with that said, it's surprisingly detailed and I'd say technologically impressive!
I have to edit my original review. It was kind of all over the place. I have always loved anything AD&D. I had all the original books and the dice and the graph paper...lol But I digress. I had this back when it 1st came out and I loved it. Buying and playing it now...its just too old school to really enjoy. Graphics and game play very very dated. Its not a bad game just...old.
It's nostalgia pure and simple. There's nothing special unless it's special to you.
Update: Upon playing for a couple more hours I had to change my recommendation because I've encountered an error that made me lose all my 8+ hours progress. Error 27, apparently due to the DOSBox version. What a frustrating twist. Don't even bother with this buggy mess. What's the point of re-releasing a 30+ years old game on a modern gaming platform if it doesn't even work properly? And it ain't that cheap. What a rip-off. Original review: D&D + Sim City back in the early 1990s. I played this game for the first time here on Steam and found it quite enjoyable. Simple enough to get you hooked but not simplistic, it takes you some time to learn everything you need if you don't read the manual beforehand (it helps but not necessary, maybe you should check the magnet feat to learn how to move your recruited characters around though). If dated graphics and the old SSI aesthetics sound appealing this might be a game for you.
This is not a good game for todays standards. Its just an attempt to get you to spend some money on nostalgia. I fell for it!
Great walk down memory lane, back when they knew how to make proper games, i started it up and before i knew it, it was already couple hours past. wish someone would make a proper remake to hose good games, dosn't even need to change much, give it a face lift, and add some Quality of life changes, like ability to have a seperate page just to see which people you have are at home, or are at the ready etc.. other then that, really not much to change in this game. loved it when it came out, love it now, and would alwys love it.
This is my favorite computer game. Farmville was a very close second. It has enough detail to keep the mind busy but not so much you become overwhelmed in detail and feel like an accountent.
At the time of review I've played this for 2.7 hours - I bought it on sale for about $4. It's an old game - runs in DOS-BOX! But surprisingly the devs are still making updates to the UI and manuals, and implementing cloud-saves - so it's still getting updates which is encouraging. There is no volume control for the annoying music - so I just have to lower the system volume to save my ears and sanity. The game-play consists of building buildings in 5 city areas controlled by 5 heroes who recruit and train armies to fight monsters that will attack the city. So far I've only seen 2 lone skeletons roaming miles and miles away from the city - way too far to be a threat. So I've wondered what will come to attack us - do I need to build city walls, or maximize the economy? An hourglass eventually marks a change of seasons from fall into winter, then spring, then summer. I'll update this review hopefully after I see a bit of fighting action - but as much as I've seen from playing it, this is a bit of fun, and a nice time waster. Easily worth what I paid.
