I really pondered recommending this game but in the end I can't. The aesthetic is cool if you are into it. The night time gameplay is very nice, you need quick decision making. Unfortunately, the enemy's type does not matter as much as it should, I just find myself cycling the same game plan as fast as possible. The daytime gameplay (ie deckbuilding part) is not very interesting. You pick from several locations which have slightly different pool of events, pray and roll the dice hoping to get something useful. The story is incredibly short and barely qualify as a story. I had a few hours of fun and It was cheap enough that I didn't consider a refund but I can't recommend it.
Presentation, substance, but not enough meat. As your retro AI mentions in the start, Spellhack plays a lot with your muscle memory. This is a line defence deckbuilding game that doesn't give you time to ponder, unless you want to deal with increased amounts of enemies that eventually will overwhelm you. The presentation remembers Inscryption just a tensy weeny bit, but that's all it does. During daytime you'll stroll around some locations on a map to build or deck by adding, improving or removing spells, then during night you fight the line defense game that lasts until the turn countdown is over. It is a fun game, it does plays like something retro that you would play on DOS in the 90's, but that's pretty much it. Apart from a story mode which can be finished shockingly fast, you unlock a couple challenge difficulties and that's that. You'll wish there was more story. You'll wish more fun things happened in your computer desk. You'll wish there was some sort of exploration. You'll wish there were 3XP4NS10N P4KS with more content. But nope. And yeah, that's not really horrid considering the game's price. But seriously, this game is never gonna fit in a floppy disk. 1GB, are you f+++ing kidding me?
I would say this is an "alright" game, like this is basically a meh rating. I think the price is fair, but i would avoid if you're exclusively looking for a roguelike (like I was). Essentially the game is a retro tower defense, but there seems to be a severe lack of builds. Its pointless to invest in damage because enemies pour in faster than you have energy, so my winning strategy was to just spam walls and knockback (with burn) until the time saved me. Also forcing me to use keyboard/controller was annoying since everything in the game could be done with just a left click
A love letter to 80s text adventure ROM games with Slay the Spire rogue like elements and 5 Nights at Freddy's real time strategy. What seems simple at first on the surface quickly becomes a bit more in-depth as you play. Not only are you trying to build the best deck possible, but with things unfolding in real time, you can't sit still trying to dissect what the best possible move will be. The longer you wait, the more time passes and more enemies you have to face. Having to balance playing the best movies while managing the threat level clock gives what would otherwise be another run of the mill deckbuilder a unique and fun edge. And with everything playing out with just a few keys and no mouse input, it takes you back to the earliest of PC games. Add in some fun dialog, characters, and map exploration, this is a pleasantly surprising game I can see myself playing for either 15 mins or a couple hours depending on my mood.
SPELLHACK!!, developed and published by Computer Dream, presents a refreshing interpretation of the roguelike deckbuilding formula by combining strategic spell management with fast-paced real-time survival gameplay. Rather than relying on traditional turn-based encounters, the game throws players directly into frantic battles where every decision must be made under pressure. This hybrid approach creates an experience that feels both familiar and innovative, rewarding players who can balance careful planning with quick reactions. Wrapped in a nostalgic retro aesthetic inspired by the 1980s, complete with stylized visuals and live-action FMV sequences, the game establishes a memorable identity that immediately separates it from many modern indie roguelikes. The gameplay centers around an engaging cycle of preparation and survival. During the day, players explore the mysterious Doom City, collecting Technospells, upgrading their Spelldrive, discovering useful equipment, and encountering random events that can significantly influence the direction of each run. These quieter moments encourage experimentation and strategic planning, allowing players to build increasingly powerful spell combinations before facing the dangers that emerge after sunset. Once night falls, the pace shifts dramatically as relentless waves of Summoned Beasts attack from every direction, demanding quick movement, efficient spell usage, and constant adaptation. The contrast between calm preparation and intense nighttime combat gives each run a satisfying rhythm that keeps the gameplay engaging throughout. A major strength of SPELLHACK!! lies in the impressive variety of options available during every playthrough. With more than 150 Technospells to unlock and combine, players are encouraged to experiment with countless offensive, defensive, and support abilities to create unique builds. The large roster of over 50 enemy types ensures that encounters remain unpredictable, while randomized events, collectible items, and evolving character progression provide enough variation to make repeated runs feel rewarding instead of repetitive. The roguelike structure consistently motivates players to discover new strategies, refine existing builds, and adapt to changing circumstances rather than relying on a single dominant approach. The game also demonstrates thoughtful accessibility despite its unconventional mechanics. Story Mode gradually introduces the core systems, making it easier for newcomers to understand the relationship between exploration, deckbuilding, and real-time combat. Once players become comfortable with the fundamentals, Challenge Mode raises the difficulty through increasingly demanding scenarios that require greater efficiency, stronger builds, and sharper reflexes. This progression creates a satisfying learning curve that accommodates both newcomers and experienced roguelike enthusiasts without sacrificing the game's strategic depth. Presentation plays an equally important role in defining the overall experience. The combination of retro-inspired graphics, VHS-era influences, and intentionally quirky FMV scenes creates an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and delightfully strange. Instead of simply relying on pixel art for visual appeal, SPELLHACK!! embraces a distinctive style that complements its unusual concept. The soundtrack, visual effects, and overall presentation work together to reinforce the feeling of uncovering a forgotten cult classic from another era, giving the game a personality that remains memorable long after each session ends. Although the game introduces many compelling ideas, its hybrid design may not appeal to every player. Those expecting a slower, more methodical deckbuilder may initially struggle with the constant pressure of real-time combat, while players looking for a pure action game must also learn how to optimize spell combinations and manage resources effectively. However, this combination of tactical planning and fast execution ultimately becomes one of the game's defining strengths, rewarding patience and experimentation as players gain experience with its mechanics. SPELLHACK!! succeeds because it confidently blends several genres into a cohesive experience without allowing one element to overshadow the others. Its creative gameplay loop, extensive spell variety, replayable roguelike progression, distinctive retro presentation, and satisfying balance between strategy and action make it a standout indie release for players seeking something beyond conventional deckbuilders or survival games. While mastering its systems requires commitment, the payoff is an experience filled with variety, originality, and lasting replay value. Rating: 8/10
Does the game look like your jam? Then you should probably get it. I feel like this was executed extremely well. Making a build is simple enough to where just about everything you get feels like an upgrade, but not so simple that you can just add whatever and expect to see credits. There's also a lot of replay value in the unlockable challenge difficulties, which I am eager to get into. Due to all of this, the low price point feels like a steal. Also, can more people please play this so the developer will be incentivized to release the soundtrack somewhere? it absolutely slaps.
Just starting the game but its been a fun experience, really hits that retro vibe.
Card-based tower defense that keeps you on your toes. A short but fun play, creative gameplay with a lot of good ideas going on, would love to see a sequel with more content
1 metric nugget of carbonated lo-fi roguelite perfection.
