Got this cause I grew up with the SNES version & one of the rare people that actually enjoyed it. Loved the story; so when I found out that the SNES story was lost in translation to the original I wanted to pick this up. If your experience with this game is the SNES version though then I **highly** looking up the manual of the DOS version cause unlike the SNES version this game straight out throws you in the action right away, no backstory or controls explanation (And it's not simplified at all) Also there's some changes from the SNES version, like the instakill shark in Hordkhen's castle is present from the start (Also he'll kill you right away if you pester him too much) If you hated the SNES version odds are you probably won't like this one (it's much easier to die in this one too). If you never played this game & have no nostalgia for it then proceed with caution - this is one of those old games that hasn't aged too well. (Also ctrl + F11/F12 adjust emulation speed; game runs too fast by default)
Drakkhen is an action RPG that was first released in 1989 and to date is still one of the most innovative action RPGs I have played – no other action RPG I have played has been able to truly replicate the experience you will get while playing through this game. The game isn’t without its share of faults (enemies massively out level your party at times, there’s no overworld map, there is no way to rest and restore HP/MP so you will have to stand around passively for it to regenerate, the spells and phials in the game are only listed by symbols and not names so you’ll have no idea what they do at first) but despite its shortcomings the challenge Drakkhen presents and the satisfaction you get when you fully complete the game make it worth seeing the game through until the end.
the emulation speed is crazy. the controls are not intuitive. nothing at the start to tell you what to do. tip: press ENTER to go to Party Mode - so u can travel on world map
nothing like the snes version...
This is not the SNES one you remember. It plays in a DOSBox, it has no controller support, it has no instructions, the controls are impossible, the map from the SNES version doesn't exist, there's no compass to tell which direction you're going, nothing. Enemies will reappear in rooms constantly without any warning that there are even enemies going to be appearing in some cases, they just show up, wipe your party and you're done. You can't save inside of the palaces and you only heal over time outside so you better find a nearby building to stand at the entrance of for a couple of days to heal up before doing a LOT of grinding to make progress even walking around.
Just sits on the boot menu for me. Looks too old anyway to enjoy.
Drakkhen was the first RPG on the SNES and played so unintuitively awful, you'd swear it must have been better in its original intended setup with a mouse and keyboard. Now new generations can have their optimism shattered and discover the SNES port was the best case scenario, complete with far more sensical UI and much needed rebalancing. The mouse's only purpose here is to make you accidentally click on your own party members as they run around in circles blocking your path to further screw up your setup. Most of the keyboard is for hiding what few buttons actually do anything as you stumble through horrible menu designs and accidentally turn the sound off trying to access a basic item. Half the clickable menu is hands you can't tell apart and others are things like the "don't just stand there and let the monsters murder you" button that shouldn't need to exist. It's kind of an achievement in how bad everything works that an early control pad ends up being the ideal way to play despite the genre. I still wanted to play this game because it does have some moody visual flair, and exploring a hostile world dressed entirely in stuff you grab off castle walls has its charms. But this version just... plays so bad. It's a game that starts you with no explanation including of controls, your characters are naked without bothering to wear any of the clothes they brought as they get jumped and killed by randos, and if you go looking on the internet for instructions, the resolution gets messed up with seemingly no way to resize besides turning the game off. Once you finally get it to behave, a first area random encounter monster can still just instantly wipe out your party anyway. There is no compass or overworld map to show where anything is or where you're going. Screens have no indicators for what you're looking at or supposed to do. Items and spells are in unexplained gibberish just because. Not because the game is sophisticated and deep, it's a very special kind of inaccessible where your characters get confused and stuck over the concept of walking through doors. I'm usually here for the retro jank but this is mostly the distilled bad kind. This is the kind of dungeon design where the SNES port adding single red pixels to screens was a vast improvement in coherence. OG Drakkhen is pure, malicious suffering... but it's an important landmark worth preserving, like some medieval torture device in a museum. Before we insisted on distinguishing between jRPGs and wRPGs, a bunch of Japanese programmers ported this game while asking important questions like "What if the controls and visuals made more sense?" and "Hey, what if this mess was actually playable?" They later built a whole sequel out of that logic. It was an experiment and cultural exchange that probably played a crucial role in making modern RPGs from either hemisphere more streamlined and intuitive. A reminder of how every bad game has a playable game struggling to get out with some more common sense.
Follow our Curator Group for more reviews
Drakkhen is an RPG that is great for nostalgic players but has aged horribly for anyone that has never played it. It is almost incomprehensible when you first start playing. The steam version stays true to the original, with no explanation of any game mechanics. You will most likely need to look up a guide if you want to play this game and know what you are doing. None of the manuals are included with the game, so you will have a harder time playing it than even the first players had. It has some interesting game mechanics, but it is so clunky and user-hostile that it can't really compare to modern games. There are many RPGs that capture a retro feel without all the usability issues, but I also understand that for some people, these issues are part of the charm. If you like the feel of "true" retro games, then you will probably enjoy this, but it'll be tough for the average RPG fan to get into it. 3/10
Visit our website for more in-depth reviews and recommendations
Download the manual elsewhere because it is not included with the Steam version which is disappointing.
