DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake

I never played the original game, but this remake genuinely kicks ass. I love the control I have over my party. You are encouraged to explore the world around you and search for secrets. Every npc tends to have something useful or interesting to say. The conversation recall mechanic that allows you to mark down what people have said to you is incredibly helpful in remembering useful advice, or determining what your next goal might be. It makes you feel even more connected to the npcs and the world they live in. You can customize your party endlessly and carve your path through enemies in multiple ways. I did reach a few points in the game that would have been very easy to just grind to beat but you can usually use your existing abilities to outplay the enemies. I think this is my favorite part of the game, as it rewards you for putting thought into your party and how you progress each character. I even loved giving my non magic characters items that let them use magic abilities like snooze, or spell seal. It gives yet another way to customize your party beyond the character itself. The storylines in the various major areas of the game all are quite satisfying to experience, especially with the spectacular work from the Japanese voice actors. Combine this with the spectacular sprite work and it all comes together for a wonderful remake experience. I wonder if fans of the original feel the same as I do. All in all, this is a great classic RPG with modern technical features that are used wisely to enhance the experience. I would highly recommend if you are interested in trying classic a Dragon Quest game.

Great remake, always been a fan of the HD 2D graphics thanks to games such as Octopath Traveler. Would highly recommend this and the 1-2 HD remakes. I hope they remake 4-6 in the HD 2D art style.

A whopping 38 years after its original release, DQ3's gameplay has aged gracefully, unlike many of its contemporaries. Some difficulty spikes in the very last act soured the experience a bit, and random encounters can be obnoxious at times, but exploring, battling, and questing felt as fresh as any game released in 2026. The vocation system is a particular highlight, allowing for some really interesting team builds. No wonder DQ3 is held in such high regard to this day, it truly is a groundbreaking and genre-defining masterclass in game design.
