DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake successfully brings one of the most important role-playing games in gaming history into the modern era while preserving everything that made the original unforgettable. Developed by Square Enix and ARTDINK and published by Square Enix, this remake carefully balances nostalgia with modernization, creating an experience that feels respectful to longtime fans while also welcoming players who may be discovering the adventure for the first time. Rather than completely reinventing the classic formula, the game focuses on enhancing the original’s strengths through stunning presentation upgrades, smoother gameplay systems, and expanded storytelling touches that enrich the overall journey. The most immediately striking aspect of the remake is its visual style. The HD-2D presentation transforms the world into something that feels both retro and contemporary at once. Pixel art characters move through richly detailed environments illuminated by dynamic lighting, weather effects, and layered scenery that give every location depth and atmosphere. Villages feel lively and comforting, caves appear genuinely dangerous, and world exploration carries a magical sense of discovery. The art direction captures the spirit of classic Dragon Quest while making the adventure visually engaging enough to stand beside modern RPGs. Battles particularly benefit from the visual overhaul, with spells and abilities receiving dramatic effects that make combat far more exciting without losing the charm of the original designs inspired by Akira Toriyama’s legendary artwork. The story follows the child of the great warrior Ortega as they set out on a quest to defeat the dark force threatening the world. While the narrative may appear straightforward compared to modern RPGs filled with complex political conflicts and endless cutscenes, the simplicity works in the game’s favor. DRAGON QUEST III focuses heavily on the feeling of adventure itself. The game constantly encourages exploration, curiosity, and gradual progression rather than overwhelming players with excessive exposition. Each new town introduces fresh problems to solve, mysterious characters to meet, and secrets to uncover. The remake also adds new scenes and emotional moments that deepen the narrative without compromising the old-school pacing that fans appreciate. Combat remains traditional turn-based gameplay, but it still feels engaging because of the excellent vocation system. Players can build their party using multiple classes such as Warrior, Mage, Priest, Merchant, Thief, and several others, each contributing unique strengths and abilities. Experimenting with party compositions becomes one of the most enjoyable parts of the experience, especially once players gain the ability to switch vocations while retaining learned skills. This creates opportunities for deep customization and strategic planning that remain satisfying throughout the entire adventure. The addition of newer gameplay refinements also helps battles move at a much smoother pace than older versions of the game. One of the remake’s greatest achievements is how it modernizes the experience without stripping away its identity. Features such as faster combat speed, autosaving, clearer objectives, improved menus, and adjustable difficulty settings make the game significantly more accessible to modern audiences. At the same time, the developers avoid simplifying the experience too much. Exploration still matters, grinding can occasionally become necessary, and the world still rewards patience and curiosity. The result is a remake that respects the intelligence of the player while removing many frustrations associated with older RPG design. Exploration remains a core strength throughout the adventure. Traveling across continents, sailing through oceans, discovering hidden treasures, and uncovering new locations constantly creates a rewarding sense of progression. Unlike many modern open-world games that overwhelm players with icons and objectives, DRAGON QUEST III allows exploration to feel natural and exciting. There is always the sense that something meaningful may be hidden just beyond the next town or dungeon. The pacing of the adventure reflects a classic RPG philosophy where the journey itself feels just as important as the destination. The soundtrack also deserves considerable praise. The orchestral arrangements give the world a grand and emotional atmosphere that perfectly complements the fantasy setting. Peaceful town themes, energetic battle music, and dramatic melodies during story moments all contribute heavily to the game’s immersive quality. Combined with improved sound design and enhanced presentation, the remake delivers a much more cinematic experience while still maintaining the heart of the original release. Despite its strengths, the game may not fully appeal to players who prefer fast-paced action combat or highly cinematic storytelling. Its structure remains intentionally old-fashioned, with traditional progression systems, turn-based battles, and occasional grinding. Some players may find the pacing slower than contemporary RPGs. However, these elements are also part of what gives the game its unique charm. DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake does not attempt to chase modern trends. Instead, it confidently embraces the design philosophy that helped define the genre in the first place. In the end, DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake stands as an outstanding example of how to preserve a gaming classic while making it feel fresh again. It captures the wonder, warmth, and adventurous spirit that made the original legendary while adding enough modern polish to make the experience enjoyable for today’s audience. Whether experienced as a nostalgic return or as a first introduction to one of the genre’s most influential titles, the remake delivers a rewarding and memorable RPG journey that proves timeless game design can still shine decades later. 14 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Sep 3: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 1/day in the week to Aug 4 → 1.43/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 23 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 14 places towards #1, and the 2,420 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Consigliato a chi ama i vecchi JRPG, voto 8,5/10
A very fun game that I invested my time into! I streamed this on Twitch, and it had really nice pacing and very fun moments that I could build off of. Definitely would recommend it, even for just casual play!
10/10 a falta del jefe final y post game
好恶心
Good game. This is very much the old style JRPG with a new coat of paint. Story and gameplay were good enough for me to complete, but the 100% is not for me. If you like traditional JRPGs with a good difficulty, this game is for you. Note - I will never understand why old JRPGs have so many statuses (paralyze, sleep, spells, etc) that are essentially just "skip your turn".
i do enjoy me some 2d hd graphics. but im still hoping for ports of all the original releases
