i played through veilguard twice on console and am now picking it up on steam after almost two years. i've been a huge dragon age fan since origins, i waited 10 years for veilguard and i just have to say i really enjoyed the conclusion to the series! of course theres pros and cons to the gameplay loop, writing and characters, but overall, for me, this is the perfect ending for such a long winded story. i feel like you can't really make everyone happy with such a huge fanbase and that's okay. it's definitely not a perfect game, but it has such an amazing soundtrack, visuals and emotional storytelling! The Dragon Age games really changed over the years but i don't actually mind, since now each game is unique and has replayable features to enjoy.
I am extremely disappointed in this game and what they did with it, as a fan of all entry untill veilguard and as someone WHO PRE ORDERD THE GAME HOW DARE YOU CHANGE IT IN THE LAST YEAR OF PRODUCTION, that being said is beautiful, its also a complete disconnect from the franchise, it feels like you tried to put fortnite or marvel rivals into dragonage and I hate you for that. Dragonage had so much potential so much hype this was my favorite game series for a decade and you sh** all over it, no one needs low attention span combat theres no tactically its not gritty or hard hitting any more, its pretty and thats the only good thing I have to say, oh and also, that one character that has been a main companion through 3 previous games? Yeah we're just gonna make you watch him sit in a bed while we go and play the entire rest of the game, you brought back Harding but not any of the other previous main characters?!?!? Honestly I want a refund and I won't get it but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ shame on the devs and studio heads for this abomination.
Combat is fun and the game looks and runs fantastic. While the cartoony body proportions of the characters are a little jarring stylistically compared to the grittier, more "realistic" (in so far as they could) previous titles, I eventually found myself liking the art style. There is plenty of visual spectacle and beauty to be found in the artistic direction and environment design. Spells and abilities, in terms of responsiveness and animations, are on par with Inquisition. Skill trees are suitable. While the mechanics of your companions are pretty substantially simplified, I found myself appreciating that I didn't need to design a multitude of builds. Your companions serve a nominally more important role than in previous games, developers described it as you "going on an adventure with them" rather than "them going on an adventure with you" which is largely fine. All of these things I would give something like an 8.5/10. But... the writing. Dear lord. The writing is lame, juvenile, preachy (you can just taste how proud it is for its progressiveness sometimes, but it is so preoccupied with making the correct political statement for our current political climate that it leaves the opportunity to imagine what queer identities could be like in this fantasy world completely unexplored), bizarrely modern (it often sounds more like a Tumblr blog post than a dark fantasy roleplaying game), often insufferably "quirky" in that over-done "quippy millennial" kind of fashion, retcons random ♥♥♥♥, and largely ignores the complexity of your decisions in previous installments (nothing like the Dragon Age Keep exists, you merely select 3 different largely inconsequential decisions when making your inquisitor... Because yes, similar to BG3, during character creation you also make an NPC character that exists in the background.) But most horrible of all, the entire plot and writing lacks any realistic tension or interpersonal conflict whatsoever. I heard a reviewer on YouTube describe the dialogue with companions as sounding "like HR is in the room with you at all times" and I agree. Every dialogue choice is always "Yes (nice)" "Yes (also nice, but with more information or something)" and "Yes (snarky but ultimately not especially bad.)" Your companions will never leave you, rarely ever get mad at you or each other in a meaningful fashion, indeed even the game world itself rarely ever challenges or questions you in any compelling way. Most villains are flat and underdeveloped. Every single faction that isn't the enemy are pretty straightforwardly the good guys. Pirates? Don't worry, they're *nice* pirates who do things like art repatriation <3. Assassin's guild discussed in previous installments with fear and awe? Big happy mafia family only without the morally questionable aspects of being a mafia. Furthermore, so many of them feel seriously the same just in a different aesthetic. Meanwhile, enemy factions like the Venatori are so cartoonishly evil to the point of it being flat and uncompelling. You can find the Venatori literally sitting on slaves like chairs. It's just bizarre. They even immediately, at the first opportunity, betray the imperium and align themselves with the Big Bad Guys. Why?? Idfk they're evil or whatever. Another example, a largely undeveloped Ventori villain literally bathes naked in an enormous bath of blood in a boss battle scene that should be cool as hell... but it lacks the necessary tension or build up such to the point that rather than being a chilling, horrifying revelation my reaction was moreso like "oups, sorry ma'am. Didn't mean to interrupt!" But then, worst of all, there are moments that are truly great. I found the introduction compelling as a set-up, the ending sequence was excellent, I enjoyed the twist towards the end, Solas is great, some of the voice actors are really giving it their all, and there are moments in various quests (like most things with the necromancer companion) that are truly excellent. And then to add insult to injury, they also blight the entirety of Thedas from the previous games and kill untold millions of people... literally off screen. You only learn about this by reading your mail as you receive updates from your Inquisitor about what's going on in the South (and it is, of course, the worst the world has ever seen and dwarfs anything ever seen in previous installments.) Yes that's right, if you actually bother to read you will learn that the entirely of Southern Thedas has been f*cked into oblivion. And for what? To raise the tension? To establish a clean slate? So that we can piss on the previous games? If you want to turn your brain off and enjoy a polished RPG, *mechanically* this game is still a AAA experience. But if you cared about this universe, prepare to have it both tarnished and underutilized, brutalized and ignored, flattened and Disneyfied, all at the same time.
6/10。What will they call you, when this is over?
They absolutely destroyed the lore of Dragon Age. I cannot believe the story writers got away with this. The forced LGBTQ is just too much. Dragon Age was ALWAYS an open and inclusive world, there was no need to shove it down our throats. Graphics are great...but overall what an absolute disappointment. I'm just going to pretend it doesn't exist and the Inquisition was the last game.
Who is this game for? I purchased the whole Dragon Age Series in hope that all the stories and choices are connected. NOPE. It's also shocking how it extremely deteriorates with each game. Origin was awesome, then it just goes downhill from there. The characters talk and act in a weird children like fashion, while the game is rated Mature? FBI should check the developers' drives. Gameplay such as the crystals and fights are STOLEN directly from the God of War. Barely any connection with the other series, characters are weird with extreme DEI adaptations, and no unique gameplay at all. But no no, you get to put your pronouns for your character and talk about your gender identity in one of the dialogues. To the developers of this game: F*** you.
Druga rzecz, którą pochwalę – to design lokacji i eksploracja z nimi związana. Do czego mam mieszane uczucia, to system reputacji we frakcjach – reputacja ma znaczenie dość późno w grze, a nabijamy ją sprzedając „cenne przedmioty” + robiąc zadania. Grzecznie do bólu… Teraz do rzeczy złych. By Veilguard zrobił generyczną historię o ratowaniu świata, z klasycznymi złodupcami którzy chcą po prostu zniszczyć świat czy tam go sobie podporządkować. Pojechano po naprawdę niskiej linii oporu i wywrócono lore do góry nogami w wielu kwestiach. No i sam writing… No i wiele rzeczy wydaje mi się dość naciąganych. No po prostu… no nie. Dialogi w większości meh, zestawić takie z Dragon Age Origins/Inkwizycji z tymi… to niebo a ziemia. Echhh.
Maybe the worst game ive ever played, story feels meh and like a weekend drama show, combat is clunky clicker combos with horrific targerting, god forbid you use an ultimate. The ''moba amount'' of spells/abilities along with the targeting make the game smell of console milk grab at the expense of ''quality''
