I understand the critic for the game given its legacy, however leading a very busy life I really enjoyed not having to overthink my choices. Just grab the controller and enjoy some nice action combat.
Disgusting
I'm not LGBTQ or anything even though everyone seems to hate this title so much this is my first time playing this series and I actually enjoy the campaign and characters to interact with. I never played the first 2 games so I'm new to the series, but I like the action, gameplay and cinematic sequences are well executed here. Its graphically very demanding as you need a high end system to fully run this game , but its well optimized enough for a med to high range gpu if you have that. BioWare is known for creating some of the best RPG games that I have played before in the past. KOTOR, Mass Effect Trilogy and Anthem. Despite BioWare being owned by EA and they have a bad reputation, I hope they are able to stick around long enough to release the much anticipated Mass Effect 4 if it doesn't get cancelled somehow. Even though it seems only long time fans of the other Dragon Age games are bashing this title those new to the series like myself enjoy it so this comes down to an opinion of choice. Furthermore the game was discounted to $20 recently so for a title like this that was a substantial discount.
Who gave Disney the rights to this game's writing?
EA = AAA Studio making AAA Trash. Bought on sale, still feel robbed for time wasted. The story is not only bad but, it ruins the lore which made the Dragon Age universe unique in the first place. Now I am downloading Dragon Age Orgin's to remember what the universe was like before the blight of EA destroyed Bioware.
If I knew what I know now I would not buy this game. The load times are super long. YOu will not be able to switch characters in game. New game creates a new character and when you try to go back to a previous character you have to use new game mode again , finalize the same character and start game. The story stars all over again. The save system needs some cereous repair. It sucks I blew away 70$ for game and add ons. I was so stupid.
I actually liked it. Sure it is woke, but besides that I think it's a good game - and sure it's not like Dragon Age Origins or even Inquisition, but I liked it - interesting characters, interesting story with twists and intrigue, gorgeous environments, easy but never boring puzzles, fun side-content. Despite what many critique I like the combat too, alot actually - sure its more buttonmashy than Origins, but I was glad to see the series go into more of an ARPG style - I feel turn-based combat is hard to pull off in these modern times. A nice variety of skills, abilities and combo abilities - enemies are vulnerable to and resist certain damage types - a "pause / action wheel" that lets you be somewhat strategic. It might be easy sure, but for me I appreciate it being easier when you realize its a bit more casual / cozy. I dont have time any longer to struggle through the same level 10 times before beating it, suits me fine. Cinematic and interesting (for the most part)
[6.5/10]

Game development seems to have started with great concepts, but clearly rushed half way through
Disclaimer: I played this game with no expectations or reading prior reviews, and this is my cumulative review. What has stopped DA: VG from being a memorable game? 1- Bad Writing (character scripts + general storyline). Despite a few exciting sequences, the majority of the game notably lacks nuance in story writing as much of the events feel generic or taken from a template. It follows the standard "Random protagonist gets dragged into something big and unexpected > builds a team > miraculously becomes a hero > saves the day". Events happen without proper build-up. Backstories are not explained well, where the game expects you to care about characters or events that it throws at you. Character writing is some of the worst I have ever seen. Character scripts feel like they were done by Gen AI. No depth, humanism, or any form of complexity in the sentences they utter. Every conversation is a theatre play, and the dialogue options you have are basically 3 best case scenario responses, everything is positive, no dynamism in any conversation you have. 2- The Game treats you like a Child! This was what really killed the experience for me. The game is extremely PG, and too frequently insults your intelligence. Your character always has these silly lines to remind you that you are the protagonist. Conversations are typically designed to dumb down information that is very easy to absorb. There is no blood or any form of gore or realism in gameplay (feels like Diablo in 3rd person). What you say means little to nothing, except in very few limited instances, where the game surprises you that in those very small instances, your choices matter. The game is steered very heavily, with little wiggle room for you to do things differently. Characters often spew lines that sound like they were taken out of a Disney movie. Excitement and unpredictability are completely absent in this game. The game is not designed for its target audience. 3- Unpolished Mechanics & Progression. Firstly, The upgrade system stops at some point, rendering anything you collect useless after that point. Very limited ways you can improve your gear and skills (skill tree may look complex, but it's extremely basic, with limited room for creativity). Detonations are silly and feel like they were added because developers ran out of ideas. Ultimate abilities are mediocre. Game Maps are essentially platformers and limited in regards to what they offer. You will not feel the sense of 'adventure' and 'exploration' that previous DA games gave you. Finally, the game is riddled with bugs, especially with character models and maps taking too long to load. You will often run off the map or speak to floating character heads. Overall, it is clear that the game was developed on good foundations and a lot of passion went into its concepts, art and general theme. However, the game itself did not reflect that passion as it felt like a rushed product that was prematurely released without any testing. I would be surprised if any of the developers had genuinely played the game before releasing it. ______ Recommendation to Bioware: Please do not attempt a new Dragon Age game. Instead, focus on remaking Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2. If the franchise is to survive after this disappointment, you will need to focus on bringing back what made it popular. Ubisoft did this, and you can follow suit.
I know I haven't made it especially far into the game but after 5 hours, I would expect my RPG to have opened up at least a bit. I'm not upset that it isn't another generic open-world RPG like so many have gone the route of but I would have hoped that the areas we are given to explore actually had a bit of exploration. At this point, it just feels like I am putting my brain on auto-pilot and walking in a practically straight line. The locations do not feel like a lived-in world with characters who add to the storytelling. It is just one long hallway after another. Every once in a while, there is a chest or something that you have to engage with the least amount of verticality to reach but most of the time it is just going from point A to point B unbroken and endlessly which feels crazy for a game series where we should have more freedom to explore than ever with the working eluvians. I really want to enjoy this game. I mean that genuinely because Dragon Age: Origins has been my favorite game for most of my life. I have always at least been able to find some amount of good in the games going forward from that one. Awakening was a fun sort of semi-sequel that I appreciated for letting me step back into the shoes of my Grey Warden. Dragon Age 2 gave us an interesting update to the combat mechanics which I will admit felt somewhat dated in the original game. Inquisition opened up so much and made the world feel so much more alive now that we were able to explore the politics of Orlais and could even play a Qunari for the first time. I hate to be so negative about one of my all-time favorite game series, especially when so much of the discourse is from people hating this game for having inclusive options for Rook and characters who add diversity to the cast. It sucks to have to pre-empt my issues with the game by saying that I do not agree with the bad faith actors who were never going to like this game, even if it was a perfect experience that made good on the buildup we received over the years of waiting for this game to come out. I cannot recommend anyone buy this game, even on sale like I did. So far the $20 I spent on it feels totally wasted and I will unfortunately not be touching another Bioware game going forward unless they somehow manage to figure out where they've gone off the deep end and manage to release a game that has universal, unanimous and undying praise from the people still willing to give them a chance.
