Detention

The game's setting takes place in 1960's Taiwan, during what is known as the White Terror in which the islands controlled by the ROC were the subject of martial law and political repression, which is central to the what the game is discussing. The lead character is Fang Ray Shin, a student in her senior year at Greenwood High, and as of late has made some regrettable life choices. The game's visuals borrow heavily from shadow puppetry in how the characters move and the composition of game elements. As Fang explores a dilapidated school building, she also has to contend with servants of the underworld in Chinese folklore like 'wangliang' known as the Lingered and lantern specters guarding this strange Diyu. Her exploration, in the psychological survival horror tradition, is a gradual recounting of the things she did, and the stomach-churning things that happened to her, in order for her to end up in this predicament. The game is pretty straightforward in what it wants from you, and while the backgrounds are absolutely gorgeous, at its heart it's a point and click adventure game whose explorable areas are just slightly too big for its own good. Even so, the graphics mixed with the WWII era music intermingling with Wei-Fan Chang's compositions makes for an unforgettable experience!
