this goes insanely hard the person who left the review saying they wish they'd taken more time vs wolfing it down -- that is definitely true, take your time with this, it's very thoughtful and deserves consideration
The things you choose to lose
A very unique and interesting indie game. Deserves more praise.
Oedipa took out her little memo book and opened to the symbol she'd copied and the words "Shall I project a world?"
this game has managed to capture the same vibe as the best old-school dark sci-fi. after reaching a new ending I find myself wanting to sit with it and contemplate its implecations, rather than throwing myself into the next run. the world building and philosophies are fascinating, and the visuals are simple but perfect for the story they're representing.
Fascinating game, hits all my buttons. It has dystopia, rich story (if you dig deep), philosophy, surprises, alternative futures, pasts, apocalypses, predicaments... And the sweet, sweet control of molding time, and seeing what your decisions turn into, turn societies into, cause wars, utopias and rise and fall of entire civilization. There needs to be more games like this... And I yearn for more!
The story goes like this: Earth is captured by a technocapital singularity as renaissance rationalitization and oceanic navigation lock into commoditization take-off. Logistically accelerating techno-economic interactivity crumbles social order in auto-sophisticating machine runaway. As markets learn to manufacture intelligence, politics modernizes, upgrades paranoia, and tries to get a grip. The body count climbs through a series of globewars. Emergent Planetary Commercium trashes the Holy Roman Empire, the Napoleonic Continental System, the Second and Third Reich, and the Soviet International, cranking-up world disorder through compressing phases. Deregulation and the state arms-race each other into cyberspace. By the time soft-engineering slithers out of its box into yours, human security is lurching into crisis. Cloning, lateral genodata transfer, transversal replication, and cyberotics, flood in amongst a relapse onto bacterial sex. Neo-China arrives from the future. Hypersynthetic drugs click into digital voodoo. Retro-disease. Nanospasm.
A modern classic. A density of ideas and imagination seldomly found in indie games of this scope!
