The game unfortunately loses it charm as the replayability does not seem to be granting the player any kind of progression. Gems, the game's only currency that persists throughout the runs, can be very disheartening to grind due to their spawn rates and the overall gameplay flow.
This is one of the games I don't understand. The gameplay is simple and self-explained by watching the trailer: run north, fight enemies and stay alive. Collect two currencies: gold and emeralds. You'll need gold to progress in the game. And you need the emeralds to buy permanent upgrades for your character. During a run, you'll find weapons and power-ups of four different types, part offensive, part defensive. So far so good ... Now to the "But ...":

This is an autobattler, so no fighting tactics.
The weapons and power-ups you'll find during a level have charges and are therefore consumables. So most of the time during a level you'll check on your equipment and try to find the (fairly distributed) items.
The rest of the time, you hunt for gold and emeralds, constantly fighting enemies, avoiding the fire or Death itself – and unfortunately, this feels unrewarding. Mostly there are 1-4 enemies to fight and depending on the difficulty level, they are not a big deal. Unfortunately, some of your weapons have cooldown and this is not helpful. Death himself kills you instantly and meeting him at a bottleneck during a level means a new try. That can be annoying
The permanent upgrades for your character are unrewarding as well. They fall in the category "do slightly more damage" or "have slightly more chance to get gold from chests.
The graphics are charming and the NPCs are goofy. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of them and the dialogues are repeating. So they are more a bonus than really necessary for the game.
There is nealy no exploration aspect. You can't open doors and besides the camp inbetween the levels, you can't meet other NPCs. You can flip levers, find chests and gould pouches, touch bee-stalks or search wells. But that's it and you'll find more gold, emeralds or one of the four power-up types.
All in all, this is not a bad game. Controls are fine, the graphics appealing. But I had constantly the feeling, that a) I'm under pressure all the time during a level and b) that I'm missing something, because the whole gameplay loop feels so unrewarding. As I sad, this is not a bad game. But it is no game for me.
The game lacks depth, the gameplay is boring after the first half hour, there is a lot here that is poorly designed and balanced. I expected much more :(
It belongs in the Incremental category. Collect Gems to get more meta progression. Probably the one design decision I dislike most and ultimately why I will refund is the limited use of weapon pickups. If I pick up a weapon, I should have said weapon until I pick up something different. Having it break mid run and ultimately dying because of this design 'choice' just feels bad. Powerups, cool. Collectables, cool. Random quests, cool. Limited weapon that breaks leaving you essentually defenseless, not cool.
I gave this game a few rounds, and I have to say, the graphics and overall visual design are impressive, I'm a big fan of pixel art. However, the gameplay didn't quite capture me. The weapons and power-ups have a limited number of uses, and while you can equip multiple power-ups at once, the game doesn’t do the best job explaining how it works. That said, I don't think better explanations would have changed much for me. I just didn’t enjoy the core gameplay loop.
Well i finally got the last achievement, took me 22 hours to get them all, and id rate it a 10/10 its simple game and simple graphics, and great concept. well worth the price
It has the Ron Gilbert's signature charm, along with his typical provocation and humour, reminding us that not everything is straightforward or logical. Some people say it is slow, but you can figure it out over time how to master it. Within this genre, it is a good game. Note: The beeping clown and other characters also make an appearance.
A hidden gem. Death by Scrolling has a lot of personality, and, gameplay-wise, there's little like it. You run north, trying to constantly manoeuver yourself to bring enemies in range of your auto attack, dodge theirs, avoid environmental hazards, and escape the encroaching fire from the bottom of the screen. You're constantly making split second decisions that make or break a run; for example, I grabbed the power to run on water, made use of that for a bit, then had to grab another power to dispatch an enemy, run quickly back to the water walking ability, grab it with a second to spare, and continue north. It's good stuff! A wry sense of humour also helps.
This game has a fun mechanic - auto-attack while constantly moving up - that reminds me of Vampire Survivors. There's a sense of humor that reveals itself in conversations as well as randomly spawned areas. There's a good upgrade curve that makes runs easier. The soundtrack is great as well, with a rock earworm during runs and a calmer variant between. You can beat the core game in 10 - 20 hours, and keep going for achievements.
