First things first, I was a beta tester for the game. So take that as you will. Another thing is that this is Steal Fishes first game ever. So my standards are very low for this review. Note this review contains spoilers The game is made with passion as the person did their best with minimal experience and I can fully respect that. The game is also a full-length game which is great for someone's first outing. Lets start with the Pros The art style for the dragons is very consistent and has Spanish undertones which I find pretty cool. Some of the bosses like the Gargoyle dragon, Slime, and…. Crazy Woman was fun. The Gargoyle was just fun in general using the stone dragon to make the fight more entertaining, the Slime boss had two fazes in which both were radically different, and the Crazy Woman….. That one just through me through a loop. About ¾ levels are pretty decent to fun. As its just some basic platforming that gives you a challenge from time to time. All of the power-up crystals are fun. Not one I have a problem with. My personal favorite is the ball one as it lets me brute force things. Fire Dragon lets you shoot things including health crystals so you can grab them from afar where it's safe. Stone dragon Half of the backgrounds are pretty nice, mostly the ones that keep with the theme that you are trying to go home. As they tend to be the most fun and keep the feel of the game. A lot of enemy variety with very few recolors. Keeping the game fresh all the way tell the end/ Nice attempts to change up gameplay from time to time. From the standard get to the end, to kill em all, to collect multiple crystals. It helps keep things fun and varied. Goat Dragons….. That is all Now the Nutrals (Aka stuff that is meh) The music is royalty-free in most cases. The voice acting is there but most of it is… Kind of bland. Except for the Spanish bounty hunter. I liked his voice a lot. Although there are a lot of enemy types. The art style for each changes and doesn't stay consistent. There is random horror in the game, which for a game that feels child-friendly could be a turn-off. Now time for the cons As I have stated with the crystals, Brute forcing is your best bet. As ¾ missions are decent or fun. ¼ are mindnumbing and even broken. The only saving grace being that many of these levels save your progress when collecting crystals or killing enemies on specific missions. There are quite a bit of bugs including spawning on the restart screen and dying immediately, random spike balls glitching out and killing you across the map, teleporting as the Stone dragon sometimes glitches you to the ground, your health and score bar randomly going to the bottom of your screen, and a few others. Some mechanics in levels can make you smash your head against your keyboard. From random clouds making being a fire dragon a living hell in already hard missions, to having the cheese enemies that or they will instantly kill you. The game is filled with these and you will learn to cheese or be creamed. Most extra stuff like the coins you have to go out of your way to get, and it's just not worth it. Most will have you skip the exit to go and get the coin. Which is some levels where if you die you restart the level is just not worth it. Don't be afraid to get hurt by some enemies as it is easier to take some dmg and use the invincibility frames to get past them than to take the extremely long way around them… Or hope the enemy randomly despawns or jumps off the map. Random tutorials and talking 3-4 missions when you actually would have liked them. As you will notice when talking to your friend during the cutscenes, they talk about things 3-4 missions ago when you could have used that info. Using some of the floor blocks as wall blocks confused me and some of the wall blocks also looked like backgrounds. Cutscenes retreading on the same conversations made me skip a lot of them. Inconclusion Although the game is fun, it is someone's first try and I hope to see a second game. My recommendation is to cut the levels in half and focus on making each one better. Or you will end up with…. Level 37….. God my rage after that level. Also to find a style and stick with it. As it feels like there are 4 styles, fighting a losing war. My personal favorite was when there were houses and light tones. When it goes dark in the caves, I tend to lose more interest and even expect the levels to be worse. Keep up with the fun aspects of the game which are the platforming and the Spanish themes and it should turn out as a better game. All in All… I will sadly give it a Meh, but i hope the next ride will be Gut.
I tried this game out last night and the voice acting is good and it is like a throw back to a 2D side scrolling adventure game for me which is good. I laughed multiple times at the humor in the dialogue and some of the levels are quite challenging. While I do enjoy the game, I think the normal price is to high in my opinion. Is this a $20 USD worthy game? Only you can decide. I think its a definitely give a try game that can be picked up and put down easily. The levels are more puzzle solving like to see the right way how to handle certain sections to get by them. The graphics are ones I have come to know from my early years of gaming and always enjoy. Overall I think this game is well done and something I plan to keep playing off and on. This is working great with an Xbox controller on PC.
The game has a nice soundtrack and a cute and charming art style. Just finished the first world section facing the boss and I've found the gameplay so far very enjoyably and fun. I like the gameplay flexibility offered to the player of speedrunning to the space gem, ending the level or going around the platform level collecting and staying everything to maximize your score. I really like that part because to me it helps with the replay-ability of both the levels and the game as a whole. :)
The Adventures of Helio is a cute platformer, with Super Mario and Donkey Kong country vibes, funny characters, and a simple-yet-fun story. It has a bright and colorful whimsy that seems to be making a comeback in modern games, which is always welcome!
This game is pretty good, not a game reviewer but if i like it, i'll give it a thumbs up which in this case I do.
It's a fun little platformer; 60 levels if you can call that little. It is definitely not easy in places and ignoring the few bugs I encountered it plays just fine. The difficulty isn't from any sort of poor controls, but rather finding the best way to approach some of the longer or more complicated levels. The story is simple and easy to follow with nice voice acting, but at times it feels like this could be a second game in a series due to how familiar characters are with each other. At the moment I would like to see an extras / bonus section on the menu for art, basic world info, and short character backgrounds (like where they are from, how they know X character, and a few simple bits of info about them). Other than that it's a fun game and a great start considering it's a first. It's not a ten out of ten game, but overall not bad. I wouldn't give it less than a seven. Great job, I looking forward to more in the future.
I got this game to give a dev feedback on stream...but I'm going to share some of it here too. What a cute game! I love the retro-feel artwork and the player sprite is adorable. I enjoyed the variety in how the player moves/acts and there was enough challenge to keep my interest. I was surprised with
a little voice acting in there
too. That gave me Saturday morning cartoon vibes. Controller support would be nice (or better shown if there) for this type of game but I still give it a 9/10.
A lovely platforming time!
