Ganz klar keine Empfehlung.
UPDATED REVIEW 4/11/26: Unfortunately, I have to change my review to a negative one. I didn't mind that the game was simple and without much depth, but all my progress got wiped in January. I've seen somebody else say the same thing happened to them TWICE. I decided to give it some time, but there has been no patch nor acknowledgement from the dev about this bug. IF this ever gets addressed I'd be happy to swap back and enjoy the game again. Til then, I'd say avoid. OLD REVIEW: Even on easy, the game's pretty hard. But it's fun, and I really like the humor in it!
There is fun to be had here, But in my opinion i feel like the core mechanic is so simple and boring since i feel like the items dosent really add anything to my build. and my biggest gripe is that you run out off ammo and drop the weapon and have to pick up a new one every few minutes.
Nope
Death by Scrolling, developed by Terrible Toybox NZ and published by MicroProse Software, is a fast-paced action roguelite built around a single, uncompromising idea: you are always being pushed forward, and stopping means dying. It takes the familiar concept of auto-scrolling and turns it into the central tension of the experience, creating a game that feels less like a traditional roguelite and more like an arcade survival test wrapped in a darkly comedic vision of the afterlife. The premise is as strange as it is fitting for the game’s tone. You find yourself in a bureaucratic version of purgatory, where death is not the end but the beginning of an endless grind for survival and progression. Rather than focusing heavily on narrative, the game uses this setting as a backdrop for its mechanics, delivering bits of humor and worldbuilding through its design and presentation. The tone leans into absurdity, with a sense of irony that keeps the experience from feeling overly bleak despite its constant threat of failure. Gameplay revolves around a vertical auto-scrolling system that never lets up. From the moment a run begins, the screen pushes upward, forcing the player to keep moving while avoiding hazards, fighting enemies, and collecting resources. There is no safe moment to pause or plan extensively; decisions must be made quickly and often under pressure. This creates a unique kind of tension where the challenge comes not just from enemies, but from the environment itself. The constant movement turns even simple encounters into high-stakes situations, as positioning and timing become critical to survival. Combat is intentionally streamlined, focusing more on movement and situational awareness than on complex inputs. Players acquire abilities and upgrades during each run, which can significantly influence how they approach encounters. Some abilities emphasize offense, allowing for more aggressive play, while others provide defensive or mobility benefits that help manage the chaos. The roguelite progression system supports this loop by offering incremental upgrades between runs, encouraging repeated attempts and gradual improvement. However, the depth of these systems remains relatively modest, prioritizing accessibility and pacing over intricate build variety. What stands out most is the game’s pacing. It rarely gives the player a moment to relax, maintaining a constant sense of urgency that defines the entire experience. As runs progress, the density of enemies and hazards increases, pushing players to adapt quickly and think on their feet. This relentless tempo can be exhilarating, creating a rhythm where survival feels like a continuous series of narrow escapes. At the same time, it can also be exhausting, particularly for players who prefer a more measured or strategic approach. Visually, Death by Scrolling adopts a clean pixel-art style that supports readability during chaotic moments. The design ensures that players can quickly identify threats and opportunities, which is essential given the speed of the gameplay. The presentation is enhanced by its humor, with character designs and environmental details reinforcing the game’s satirical take on the afterlife. The audio complements this tone, maintaining energy without overwhelming the experience. Despite its strengths, the game does have limitations. The core mechanic, while effective, does not evolve significantly over time, which can lead to repetition during longer sessions. The roguelite elements, while present, lack the depth seen in more complex titles within the genre, making progression feel somewhat limited. Additionally, the constant pressure that defines the game may not appeal to everyone, particularly those who prefer exploration or slower-paced gameplay. Ultimately, Death by Scrolling is a focused and confident execution of a simple idea. It doesn’t attempt to offer a broad or deeply layered experience, but instead commits fully to its core concept and builds everything around it. The result is a game that is easy to pick up, immediately engaging, and consistently challenging, even if it doesn’t provide long-term variety on the same level as larger roguelites. Rating: 8/10
A simple idea for a game, well-executed with a lot of character squeezed into small moments. This game is in my hotlist of games where I just want to shut off the outside world for a little while but only have the brainspace for pure reflexive decisions.
#DeathByScrolling #TerribleToybox #RonGilbert #MicroProse #Roguelite #GamingReview #Gaming2026 #PixelArt #Doomscrolling #ActionArcade
