This isn't a bad game, it's just not a game for me, or adults. I would call this a narrative/walking sim with some extremely simple puzzle elements, rather than a puzzle game. Easily more than half of the time you are playing is dedicated to painfully slow, simple conversations designed to be understood by a 5 year old (or younger). An example of the conversations in this game go something like this. "Hi facilitator! I accidentally broke this thing! Do you think I'm a bad person?" You can either respond, "No, of course not!" or "uhhh...". There, I just spoiled 70% of the game for you. How riveting. The actual puzzles are fine, they get harder as you progress but the way the game orients them makes it feel like they are just tacked on. You simply go to a specific spot in the map, every day, do your puzzles, and spend the rest of the game aimlessly walking around wherever the story dictates you go, being subjected to mindnumbing dialogue the whole way through. Trailers made it seem like this game was more open-ended, exploratory, with puzzles in the environment. There are puzzles in the environment, rarely, but they literally amount to pressing one button somewhere and moving an object or two. Literally round peg in round hole, square peg in square hole sort of puzzles. I would only recommend this game to somebody looking for a puzzle game for a very young child. Even 10 would be too old for this in my opinion.
I LOVE fixing things i can't WAIT to begin my day at the fixing things factory. :edit i'm very responsible and committed to caring for this feline.
Got the "happy ending" achievement on my first run-through. I liked the game; the setting is interesting, and the characters are likeable. Some of the decision-making sequences are a bit confusing because there is no back button, but at least most paths have a bailout option at the end. You can also just quit the game and continue from the autosave. The puzzles are very easy. For someone not accustomed to logic puzzles, the later or optional ones might take some trial and error, but overall, they serve better as a narrative tool for the lore than as actual challenges. I'm not sure whether I'll go back for the other endings or choices. I feel like I finished the game in a good state. There are also some collectables if you're into that. Overall, it's a chill story game. I'd rate it around 7/10.
The puzzles feel similar to The Witness, except there aren't nearly as many, some of them don't *quite* make sense (later on) and you're forced to talk to a lot of boring people, slowly, all of whom are totally obsessed with themselves. It's probably part of the narrative, but so far it's been so heavy-handed that I expect there's a "twist" that absolutely everyone will see coming. I'll finish it out, but unless it changes massively before the end, I think it's going to be one of those games that the best ending relies on having to pick the exact right answers for people, like an automaton, rather than playing for fun. Which, so far, is contrary to the message the game is trying to convey.
The nonchalant vibes of this game's far-flung future are both cozy and melancholic. Sometimes, the story pulls back the curtain on the dystopia, but as things progress, utopia and dystopia become ambiguous concepts. It makes you think without overthinking. Dialogue is very concise, exploring plausible sci-fi issues, yet not getting bogged down by overexplaining. I highly recommend talking to every NPC to fully appreciate this game; there's a lot of new text in nearly each moment, which helps illustrate the variety of sentiments and perspectives in the population. But again, it's concise--stuff to nibble on. Speaking of nibbling, the puzzle component is similar. Puzzles are simple and easy to solve, though the game consistently introduces new rules, so it's fun regardless. Besides the NPCs I mentioned, it's worth wandering around to find optional puzzles. The difficulty scales up there. I feel that the few slider interactions could've been expanded to be more engaging, but for the most part I was satisfied by the variety. Throughout the story, you make choices that ultimately lead to a happy, normal, or bad ending. While I got the happy ending and was content with it, I wonder if the other paths feel like other paths, tackling the themes from different angles. The choices get a bit tougher later on, but I always gravitate towards the best possible outcome when it's available in games. Some players may see it their own way. Separate from those critical decisions, characters have an "affinity" bar that fills naturally and depending on dialogue choices, letting you grow closer to them and learn more about them. I only maxed the affinity of one character. The entire cast is interesting, and that gives me another reason to keep playing. Despite wanting a larger amount of animated scenes, the production values are excellent. Minimalist low-poly art styles can be hit or miss, here it fits the game like a glove. The sound design and music reinforce the unique experience of living in D-topia as well. Sharp identity. Great job to everyone involved! I remember watching the developer video from Annapurna's showcase three years ago, and it immediately intrigued me, even though there was no gameplay footage. Playing the beautiful result of that shared passion is gratifying. Side note: Man, the synthetic and organic food dishes looked good...
