"Listen dude, we're going to need to have a talk about how you took total inspiration from Warcraft." is what I'd imagine an angry review would begin. What? I'm the angry reviewer? What do you mean? I never said such things! I merely play shovelware games six or more minutes at a time to clear out my backlog! I guess we got two more confrontations than where we started, and it's all thanks to this game. Now to talk about that action figure addiction of yours.
Confrontation is a tactical role-playing game developed by Cyanide Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive, drawing its inspiration from Rackham's acclaimed tabletop miniature franchise. Rather than emphasizing fast-paced action, the game centers on calculated decision-making, strategic squad management, and carefully coordinated battles set within the war-ravaged fantasy world of Aarklash. Players command an elite Griffin unit tasked with facing dangerous enemies across a lengthy campaign, creating an experience that rewards patience and planning more than quick reflexes. The game's commitment to tactical gameplay makes it appealing to fans who enjoy thoughtful encounters over constant action. The story follows a company of Griffin warriors as they battle rival factions threatening the fragile balance of Aarklash. Throughout the campaign, players encounter a variety of opponents, including brutal Orcs, savage Wolfen, and the sinister Scorpions, each presenting unique tactical challenges. Every mission requires adapting to changing battlefield conditions, forcing players to think beyond simply defeating enemies. The world itself is supported by established lore from the original tabletop game, giving longtime fans familiar locations, factions, and conflicts while introducing newcomers to a grim fantasy setting filled with political struggles and endless warfare. Combat is where Confrontation delivers its strongest qualities. Battles unfold in real time while demanding tactical oversight of every squad member. Proper positioning, ability timing, and target prioritization determine success far more than raw character levels. Each warrior fulfills a specialized battlefield role, whether serving as a frontline defender, ranged attacker, healer, or spellcaster, making team composition an essential part of every encounter. Victory often depends on combining complementary abilities while responding to enemy tactics, creating battles that feel rewarding when carefully executed. Although the mechanics possess considerable depth, the interface and camera occasionally make issuing precise commands more difficult than they should, especially during larger engagements where multiple units compete for attention. Progression adds another satisfying layer to the experience. Completing missions grants experience that allows characters to become stronger while unlocking new skills, magical abilities, equipment, and combat upgrades. Instead of offering superficial improvements, the progression system encourages players to shape each squad member according to their preferred tactical style. Choosing which abilities to enhance becomes increasingly meaningful as tougher enemies appear later in the campaign. This steady sense of advancement gives players tangible rewards for overcoming increasingly demanding battles and supports experimentation with different squad configurations. The visual presentation faithfully recreates the appearance of the tabletop universe, with character designs closely resembling the original miniatures. While the graphics clearly reflect the technology of their era, the environments successfully capture the dark medieval atmosphere that defines Aarklash. Castles, forests, ruined settlements, and battlefields provide suitable backdrops for the game's strategic conflicts, while spell effects and combat animations occasionally add excitement during intense encounters. The soundtrack complements the fantasy setting with appropriately dramatic orchestral music, and sound effects provide enough impact to reinforce combat without becoming distracting. Voice performances are functional, though they rarely become memorable enough to elevate the storytelling. In addition to the single-player campaign, Confrontation includes competitive multiplayer that allows players to command different factions against one another in tactical battles. This mode expands the game's longevity by encouraging mastery of unique faction strengths and strategic experimentation against human opponents. While the online player base has naturally diminished over the years, the multiplayer component reflects the developers' intention to recreate the competitive spirit of the original tabletop experience in digital form. Despite its ambitious ideas, Confrontation is not without flaws. Certain missions begin to feel repetitive, and the pacing occasionally slows due to similar objectives across multiple battles. The artificial intelligence offers a reasonable challenge but sometimes behaves inconsistently, reducing the tactical satisfaction during certain encounters. Combined with dated visuals, awkward camera controls, and a somewhat steep learning curve for newcomers, these issues prevent the game from reaching the highest level within the tactical RPG genre. Nevertheless, players who appreciate deliberate strategy and methodical combat will likely find enough depth to remain engaged throughout the campaign. Confrontation succeeds as a faithful adaptation of its tabletop origins by emphasizing meaningful tactical choices, squad customization, and rewarding strategic gameplay. Although technical limitations and aging mechanics hold it back from becoming a timeless classic, its thoughtful combat system and detailed fantasy setting still provide an enjoyable experience for players seeking a more cerebral role-playing adventure. It may not appeal to those looking for fast-paced action, but strategy enthusiasts willing to overlook its rough edges will discover a game with genuine depth and satisfying battlefield challenges.
Cyanide Studio - Aarklash: Legacy.
