Hunter’s Moon is a roguelite deckbuilder where the player must protect Victorian-era London from werewolves and other strange monsters. Combat will feel familiar to fans of other deckbuilders, while the progression of each run is very similar to Menace From The Deep.
Combat
• At the start of each turn you’ll randomly draw a few cards from your deck, which allow you to attack, defend, or perform special abilities such as applying status effects to yourself or an enemy. Cards cost energy to play, and you have a limited amount of energy per turn. • Unused block reduces by half at the end of turn instead of disappearing completely. This means that even if you’re not being attacked on the current turn, playing a defence card isn’t a complete waste. However, this effect also applies to enemies. • The player character has both a health bar and a sanity meter. While most enemy attacks deal health damage, some monsters can reduce your sanity. You’ll die if either health or sanity reaches zero. Some cards or relics spend sanity points to apply buffs. • One of the biggest differences compared to MFTD is that your cards don’t earn XP when you play them, so you won’t be able to upgrade them as often. • You can acquire relics and tarot cards which provide passive bonuses that can synergise with your cards, however there are no MFTD style set bonuses. • There are four playable characters who each have their own unique cards which provides different playing styles. Molly has a pet dog who will attack enemies, and her defence cards can be used to protect the dog. Grizwald has a pet robot and focuses on electricity attacks. Jericho is a bit like Slay The Spire’s Watcher. He gains rage points from playing attack cards, which will eventually double damage dealt and received, so the order you play cards is really important. My favourite, Nandi, has powerful poison and defence cards, making her a combination of STS’s Silent and Ironclad.
Story Mode
• Each run features four acts, and you’ll visit various locations, including normal and elite fights, random encounters where you’ll choose between different options and receive rewards or penalties, a museum where you can acquire a relic or upgrade a card, the tavern where you can restore health, a gypsy who will give you tarot cards, and the merchant where you can buy relics, cards, or consumables. And of course, each act ends with a boss fight. • Instead of the usual deckbuilder node layout, Hunter’s Moon uses MFTD’s travel deck system. Each location is a card which is shuffled into multiple decks in a random order. The player can pick the top card (which is shown face up so you know what it is) from either deck. This system provides a lot of tactical flexibility, allowing you to visit the merchant when you have plenty of money, or save a tavern for when you’re low on health. • Unlike MFTD, travel cards don’t cost fuel, which means there’s no instant game over for running out. Instead, each card increases a doom meter, which gradually makes enemies more powerful. • There’s also a meta progression layer where you’ll earn bonuses to make future runs easier. You need to gather scrap metal from certain locations in the travel deck to upgrade buildings in your base, and you’ll also earn XP from each run which lets you upgrade each character’s abilities. • A full run should take between 60 and 90 minutes to complete and it took me 12 hours to defeat the final boss and complete the story mode. There’s not really much to do after this other than try to unlock a few more achievements. • The story itself is quite basic, voice acting is poor, and the ending is anticlimactic.
Recommendation
Hunter’s Moon is a fairly good deckbuilder which fans of the genre should enjoy. It doesn’t have the long term replayability of the most popular games, but its worth picking up on a sale to play through the story mode.
Somewhere between Menace of the Deep's complexity and sometimes insane difficulty spikes, and this game's simplicity and boring, if easy, road to victory, there is probably a great game. This game is a dumbed down version of Menace w/ less story, easier progression, and it really doesn't take long to see just about everything the game has to offer. Which isn't much, even for a fan of Menace like I am. I would say pass or buy on deep discount, you'll finish almost all of it too quickly to really enjoy it.
To be honest it was very boring and not engaging at all. I skipped all the story text because it was not interesting at all. So much grinding, repetition, and endless loops. The first 3 levels are doable, but the last 4th one is not doable at all, unless you are willing to repetitively grind for a whole bunch of days to try to level up your characters to try to take on the last 4th level. Regretting all the time wasted into this. Recommend investing your valuable time elsewhere.
Hunter's Moon: A Sovereign Syndicate Adventure - це здеградований Менес до абсолютного мінімуму.
I picked this up after playing "Menace from the Deep" (it was recommended) and I was really pleased with the game. Addictive gameplay loop, cool cards and upgrades etc. I quite liked the variety of missions - gave me something to keep coming back to play. Characters were pretty decent if a little archetypal. I couldn't find fault with much of anything - except H.U.G.O. - H.U.G.O. is about as useful in battle as a marzipan sword.
From what I read, just like the original Sovereign Syndicate game was heavily borrowing its gameplay elements from Disco Elysium, this one borrows heavily from Menace of the Deep. Having played neither of them as of writing this review, a sucker for anything steampunk and Victorian fantasy, who very much enjoyed the atmosphere and lore of the first Sovereign Syndicate game, for me this game was an instabuy. Very different genre from the original, but nonetheless very fun, if a little bit short and occasionally grindy for my taste.
This is the best looking awful roguelite deckbuilder I've ever seen. All of the checklist items you'd want in a game, each implemented in a way that makes no sense in ANY card game, much less together.
