This is one of the best RTS games ever made. Def top 3. This one and its DLC is a masterpiece. Don't bother with the other two games. The second one is meh and the third is a hard pass.
I probably have a thousand hours on this game before I bought, I really love CoH it gave me memories with a close friend of mine that I can never forget. The nights where we keep playing repeatedly and the strategies and the challenges we do to make the game more fun, I can really never forget that. I am really grateful I can play online now instead of the usual pirated LAN I really love this game.
Company of Heroes is widely considered the gold standard of real-time strategy games, and even twenty years after its 2006 release, it holds an almost legendary status in the community. It redefined the genre by shifting the focus from massive, mindless unit production to intense, squad-level tactics where every single soldier feels valuable. The consensus is that it remains a masterclass in game design. Players are still deeply attached to its visceral atmosphere, the way the battlefield physically changes through its legendary destruction mechanics, and the sound design that makes every explosion or machine-gun burst feel truly impactful. While modern RTS games often struggle to balance depth with accessibility, the original Company of Heroes managed to make every tactical decision—from using cover to managing ammunition and fuel resources—feel meaningful and rewarding. There is a strong "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" sentiment among its veterans. While it is certainly an older title that lacks the quality-of-life features or high-resolution polish of 2026 gaming, the core loop is so solid that many argue it has aged better than most of its sequels. You will often see players returning to it specifically for its campaign, which is frequently cited as one of the best in the genre, and for the massive, thriving modding community that keeps the game alive with total conversions and new scenarios. However, keep in mind that being a 20-year-old engine comes with baggage. You are looking at a game built for a different era of hardware. Even with the upcoming Definitive Edition aimed at modernizing it, the base experience can feel clunky if you are accustomed to the fluid, high-speed interfaces of modern titles. Some players find the camera zoom levels frustratingly restrictive, and the pathfinding—while charming in its own way—can occasionally lead to head-scratching moments where your units struggle with tight urban environments. The verdict is that Company of Heroes is essentially a piece of history that is still incredibly fun to play. It is not just "nostalgia" keeping it alive; it is the fact that the tactical depth and the "feel" of combat have rarely been matched since. If you are looking for a gritty, immersive, and highly rewarding strategic experience, it remains mandatory playing. Whether you are in it for the tactical depth, the iconic campaign, or the endless variety provided by its modding scene, it remains one of the best strategy games ever made.
Best tactical RTS for WW2. Squads have to cooperate, infantry, mech and tanks have to support each other to win. Suppression mechanic is a huge element for realism.
Very intense and stressful. Had to play another game to relax after a session.
A classic - doesn't need much horsepower to play. Get the zoom mod though otherwise the camera is quite restrictive.
The ability to generate and control WW2 units and then shift your perspective / rotate the camera view is terrific. Pretty sure I'm autistic but I expect to be playing this game for as long as it continues to be supported.
