As many others say, this IS the best total war game / DLC as of 2025. The reason for the negative review, is that this was once a DLC, which was turn into a full stand alone game, for profits. 10 years after the game was finished. Greed is the reason for my negative review.
Awesome game. Horrible moneygrab re-releasing this just because it was popular. The corporate world is so disgusting.
This was originally DLC for Shogun 2 total war. They have re-branded it as a SAGA title making it stand alone. The scumbag thing about this is not only did they keep the price the same as it was when it launched back in 2012, to JUSTIFY that price they bundled the playable clan DLCs with it. So if you didn't want the clan DLCs and just wanted to purchase the game stand alone for a cheaper price as it should be since its over a DECADE OLD! you cant. You're stuck paying the inflated $29.99. Absolute scum bag behavior. Creative Assembly has become sick and rotted inside out.
"True modernism is freedom of mind, not slavery of taste. It is independence of thought and action, not tutelage under European schoolmasters." - Rabindranath Tagore Probably my favourite expansion to ever grace thine eyes. Shogun introduced me to Total War, but Fall of the Samurai made me fall in love with it. It takes that golden base game and evolves it with a fresh setting, new technology, and deeper tactical layers. Set during the mid 19th century, at the end of Japan’s feudal era, the game captures the turbulent clash between tradition and modernization. The arrival of Western influence forces Japan to adapt and as a player, you must choose your allegiance will you side with the Shogunate to preserve the old ways, or support the Imperial Court in the name of progress? Whichever path you take, your ultimate goal remains the same unite Japan under your rule. On the battlefield, Fall of the Samurai transforms how you think about strategy. Gone are the days of purely sword and spear warfare now your front lines are filled with disciplined riflemen backed by artillery, with katana and yari samurai still ready to charge when things get personal. Cavalry, naval bombardments, and new gunpowder units like Carbine Cavalry add a level of complexity that forces you to rethink your tactics completely. Watching traditional samurai charge through gunfire or seeing artillery explosions rip through enemy lines never loses its cinematic flair. The campaign map remains stunning that painterly, Japanese cartoon aesthetic of Shogun 2 returns, depicting a vibrant and detailed version of 19th century Japan. Unit cards and menus have been given a fresh visual style, and everything from the weather effects to the sound of cannons firing feels more intense and immersive. Beyond combat, Fall of the Samurai adds even more to the strategic layer. You can use agents like Geisha and Foreign Veterans, manage modernization through technology trees, and balance diplomacy with both domestic factions and Western powers. Every decision from which province to industrialize to which clan to ally with carries weight and long-term consequences. By the endgame, Japan is split into two opposing forces the Imperial Vanguard and the Shogunate Loyalists. It all builds toward a climactic civil war where only one can remain. Despite being technically an expansion, Fall of the Samurai stands tall as a full fledged Total War experience. It’s easily one of the best titles in the franchise rich in atmosphere, tactical depth, and historical flavour even if it’s built upon the bones of Shogun 2. A supremely graceful depiction, surprisingly balanced for multiplayer, as well solo, and much more enjoyable naval combat this one is a damn banga !
it was never a saga title. always remember this
Say what you will about this getting re-released at a higher price, this is the singular masterpiece of the entire franchise. The decline of Total War is incredibly sad, and it's unbelievable that - well over a decade later - we have yet to receive another gunpowder Total War. It seemed inevitable they'd go back after this DLC's success, especially on the heels of Napoleon's popularity. But no, we get Pharaoh. CA isn't getting another dime for me until they rediscover their most successful formula.
My most played total war game. This should be a dlc and not full price. I would wait for a discount/sale where you pay no more than 10-15 dollars(CAD). Can't believe how low this company has gotten.
i give this DLC : 7.5/10. slightly better than the main game. the reason for the negative review is they turned a 10$ DLC into a 30$ standalone game !!! === i still played this by launching shogun 2 and exactly playing it like a DLC. i don't know how it will work if you uninstall shogun 2 and only install this ! FYI i did not enjoy the main game and gave it a negative review for many reasons. now this DLC has a few extra features compared to the main game but nothing too game changing. you should buy/play this ONLY if you liked the main game ! === if you read this until here i made a game for iOS called "FatHatBoy" please check it out <3
CA really released the best historical Total War ever and then decided to never touch guns again
Total War Shogun 2 is ballersauce. Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai? Is the absolute worst Total War by far. I would rather staple my balls to my forhead and sprint through a corn field than play 2 hours of this game. While land battles can *occasionally* be satisfying or challenging artillery makes them trivial. Meanwhile I hope you're ready to buckle for for 30 hours of ♥♥♥♥ punhcing naval battles because this is just a naval battle simulator and if you don't want to manually battle naval engagements you lose the game. its simple as that. Whoever sign off on the final product of this game deserves to watch their children go hungry on christmas. I've rarely been so disappointed in a game. Jesus Christ, please strike the devs down and punish them for their sins in the 2nd Coming.
