As a newcomer to the Commandos series (someone who never played the classic titles made by the original developers, Mimimi Studios) this is a great real-time-strategy game, as well as a decent revival of the series. In terms of the pros, completing operations with precision, patience, and cooperation is very satisfying when all well-executed. Each map layout is fairly complex with possible different routes to completing objectives. Also, each of the six commandos have entertaining characteristics. In terms of the cons, one fundamental issue in this installment is the unrewarding optional objectives that are present in at least half of the campaign's missions. First, in operations 4, 6, and 14, the commandos are ordered to search and acquire enemy intelligence documents within the maps. However, upon obtaining the intel documents, it does not reward or accomplish anything of significance to the player or the missions themselves. Another few examples, in Mission 4 (Operation Cleaver) a optional objective involves sabotaging enemy gear and equipment inside one of train station's warehouses. Or in mission 3 (Operation Nightfall), where a couple optional objectives involves sabotaging enemy vehicles and enemy water supply tanks within the heavily-occupied fortress. However, completing these moderately-challenging objectives causes nothing of significance; Making it feel pretty disappointing or underwhelming for players upon completing them. There are few bugs present in the game. For example, missing interactable ladder models. This game needs better framerate optimization. Even my above-average PC (see PC specs) sometimes struggles to play this game at 30 FPS at high quality preset settings. Here's my big suggestion for improving the future installments of the series: Implement an in-game player level rank system. Since that it is implied that the players themselves are the commanding officer that gives orders to the special unit (The Commandos) throughout the missions, it would be satisfactory to the players if they are well-rewarded for executing operations thoroughly (no alarms raised, all enemies killed/incapacitated, all optional objectives completed, etc.) Experience points for leveling up the player's rank should be based on how many enemies defeated, sabotaged/destroyed enemy vehicles and equipment, primary and optional objectives completed, etc. Experience points should be given to players at the end-of-level summaries, after concluded operations. This will give players far more incentive to fully complete and replay missions, as they can hone and eventually perfect their strategy prowess, other than only needing to do the bare minimum by completing the mandatory objectives and miss out on what else the missions has left to fulfill. This is my review and suggestion for improving the potential quality of the future installments. I hope Kalypso Media and Claymore Game Studios sees this and makes use of my suggestion. I look forward to seeing what more Claymore Game Studios has in store for the future of the revived series.
