DO NOT, and I mean DO NOT buy this game unless you are like me, purchasing it for cheap and simply because you want to see how bad it is. [strike]If you are looking for keen dreams, just search "Keen Dreams Abandoned" and you can find the game for free, especially since its not being sold anywhere. [/strike] EDIT: The original versions of Keen Dreams have seemingly been added to here now. So there's now an official way to purchase the game. If you want a Definitive Edition, play "Keen Dreams Gold" by heading here: https://keenwiki.shikadi.net/wiki/Keen_Dreams_Gold_Edition Then download the newest version by clicking the button on the right and run KDGOLD.EXE in DOSBOX. Here's the pros and cons of this Definitive edition, though. Pros: -Sprites are kinda nice -New music is sometimes decent Cons: -Save select bugs out seven times out of ten, combining with the title screen -Movement is extremely fast, due to there not being a cap for cpu speed or fps. If you want to slow down the game, you have to manually do it in your own pc settings. -Jumping might as well be moon gravity -Font is GIGANTIC, it hurts my eyes -Music sounds kinda off most of the time, and the songs overpower the sfx. A lot. -No indicator as to which levels you have beaten. Plus, the levels are replayable so it ends up leading you to a game where you don't know what you have and haven't completed. This is a BARE MINIMUM FEATURE in ANY 2D PLATFORMER -No difficulty select. They are just taking features away from the original at this point! -No settings menu that I could find. In other words, no changing volume, keybinds, or anything. If you want to make the game quieter, have fun going into your PC's sound mixer and doing it manually. -Despite the advertising of "This game has controller support!" I couldn't get it to work. And there is no settings, so that means no troubleshooting!!!! -Game crashes often -Found a glitch that made Keen start flying -A bunch of other little things that just are awful. Shouldn't be considered a "Definitive Edition" when it is a straight downgrade of the original game. In other words, DO NOT BUY. If you want to play Keen Dreams, do as I said and download the original, or play Keen Dreams Gold Edition. Either will do. By the way, those are both free, and the only downside is that they don't run natively on windows. They must be run through DOSBOX. If you don't know what that is or how to set it up, head here: https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Basic_Setup_and_Installation_of_DosBox (Also, as I mentioned above, this version now includes the original DOS versions officially, so there's an official legal way to obtain them now.)
Pretty shameful to call this the "definitive edition" when the version on steam they had removed was way better
why can't one just take the old game and offer it via dos-box here...NOOO. Ppl who obviously never'd played the game in the past had to make a "definitve edition". This version of the game is definite in one way...definitely no fun at all.

awful, game plays way faster then it should with no way to fix it. buggy screens, disgusting, not my KEEN!
As a fan of Keen from the 90's, I was very disappointed. As already mentioned by others; the menu is buggy, when jumping it feels like you're on the moon (very slow), not much added considering it's a 'Definitive Edition', it doesn't detect my xbox controller... to name a few. A much better alternative is a fan-made version called Keen Dreams Gold Edition. Just search for it or copy/paste this link: https://keenwiki.shikadi.net/wiki/Keen_Dreams_Gold_Edition
A bad version of a good game. The added run ability fundamentally breaks the game's intended pace, and also makes it less fun to speed run for people who are familiar with the original version. Additionally, the new levels added are irredeemably bad. They hardly feel like any effort was put into them at all, and I don't recommend spending money to play what amounts to a poor quality Keen Dreams mod. The old port was without question better, and includes a number of features like cloud saves and achievements that aren't here. I guess it's better than Keen Dreams not being on Steam at all, as is the case with Aliens Ate My Babysitter, but this is still a poor re-release. I'd recommend sticking with the fan-made Keen Dreams Gold Edition.
commander keen: keen dreams definitive edition is... very buggy. in this review, i will talk about good things and bad things. Good things: -Visible attempts to maintain the old charm -better sprites (or some of them) -classic style Bad things: -slower animations -movement (keen jumps and walks like he's on moon (low gravity) and other stuff) -gameplay (somehow this game is worse than the original) This game DEFINITELY needs some work. by NEED i really mean it. The things that needs to be changed are the gravity and the optimalization. The soundtrack is amazing though.
I want to start this by making it clear that I respect the opinion of everyone who dislikes this. In this I will address the most common criticisms I've come across. If I do this right then by the end of reading this you'll know whether or not you want this game and I would definitely say to wait for sale but then I always say that for games. if you just want to have access to the original then that one does come with this and it runs exactly the way that I remember it being 30 plus years ago. I'm going to start by describing what it's like to boot the new edition up because that's where a lot of people soured on it and I don't blame a single one of them. When you start this up you will have to press either Left Central or Enter Once you're seeing the bare bones background. Doing so will bring the profile menu which appears to the only one that you can bring up from any point that isn't in the overworld or in a level. Seven times out of 10 the profile menu has a graphical glitch that means that you can see the glowing square that indicates what you have currently selected As far as placement goes but not actually the numbers and icons in your selection. There are three profiles one of them will be selected at the start One of them in the right corner the other in the lower left corner. In the lower right corner there is an option to reset anyone of the profiles. If it's off putting but you still want to play you can just use the first of the profiles. Once you've decided which profile you want to use you press left Control again and then you're in the game. From there you can always bring up a menu by pressing enter but the vast majority of the time in my experience it will not show the selection square. Basically it will always have selected the top option so you can just count how many times you press up or down to select what you want. There does not appear to be a way to exit the game other than Alt+F4 or windowed mode pressing the cross in the upper right corner. If you are not deterred by the above Then let me make the following clear: The game does function. I did not run into even one problem that wasn't the aforementioned menu graphical glitch. I've seen a number of people say that this runs slightly too fast and if they adjust then it runs too slow. It is entirely possible that the reason I didn't experience that is that my computer is five years old now. Same thing for those saying that jumping in this game is like being on the moon. Pros: Incredibly addictive gameplay, by far my second favorite of this entire franchise with the only one topping it being Invasion of the Vorticons the 4th one. This looks great in this edition on today's monitors. The levels are nearly all amazing and that includes the new ones which make fantastic use of the tools here(Some of them are fairly minor variations on the originals others take more liberties and some of them feel nothing like old levels And it's all great) With one level literally having you escaping those massive grapes Another having the minecarts to a greater extent than before and one of them genuinely being an actual chase with some of the toughest platforming yet and one where you have to get no less than 3 keys. The run function takes a tiny bit of getting used to and I will concede feels slightly awkward always but also opens up opportunities here and keep in mind you actually don't have to use it in the original set of levels only the new ones are built around moving extremely fast and/Or very long jumps and thus need it(Also make sure you let go of the run button which is left shift before trying to grab onto a pole also the poles take a tiny bit of getting used to in this edition so make sure you practice in the very first level where it's safe to). Incredible boss fight. Using the seeds is part of what makes this a unique entry into this series because you can bounce them, aim while jumping, even purposefully hit the ground with them and leave them as a sort of proximity mine. Great enemy design No two of them move or attack in the exact same way and once you adjust it to the way that they are there's really only one of them that is frustrating in an unfair way and there's really only one or two places in this where that is the case. An entire game about how much kids hate eating vegetables Is just the kind of ridiculous silly idea that I love. Cons: Basically just the earlier mentioned glitches. this version edition is geared towards speed runners. There is one thing where I wish that they would let you play the new levels in a way that more resembled the classic Commander Keen experience. Basically you no longer have to find the bombs you attack the king with rather you are simply granted one each time you complete one of the new levels. In my opinion collecting things is an intrinsic part of the identity of these games. I don't really mind the other aspects of how this is geared towards speed runners. You have infinite lives And you start each level with no more or less than 10 seeds regardless of how many or few you had leaving the last level. These help rebalance the challenge in an interesting way it means that you don't have to worry about Or bother with hoarding seeds like if you feel like using them at the end of one level go right ahead. And since you're not worried about running out of lives it changes how many risks you take. There's also no mid level saving anymore it auto saves whenever you complete a level. There's one or two times where I found myself missing it or at the very least a near end of level checkpoint. This also has a second counter whenever you start up a level and sometimes you can see what the count was at the end again depends on the graphical glitches. It also resets how many points you've gotten from picking up candy rather than having a count for once you've completed the game. You can complete each level however many times you like rather than it locking them off once you've beaten them once. I've seen some criticize the fact that you are not told with any indication which level you've completed so basically if you forget that you've already completed the level. At the risk of sounding condescending and I only write this because I've come across multiple people independently of one another raising this issue without pointing out the following: A potential solution that would mean you don't have to miss out on what I consider to be a great game is to have something to write on and write down each time you've completed a level either the name of the level which pops up when you start up the level or location on the overworld map. The new levels are accessed by going into the king's chambers completing that level which is the first of the new ones then you can play all the other new ones and the way that you directly access them is by going to the old ones and then when you try to enter the level it will ask which of the two you want to play. Also one of the levels in the bottom right would not play the new version for me until I had completed all the other new versions and also the original version of the King's Chambers but at that point it would. I've seen a number of people express frustration that this doesn't let you change your difficulty setting in the new edition. This definitely is something that I wish was different but with that said this is one of those games where if you use your imagination you can make it more challenging. try to get as close to enemies before attacking them as you can, passing levels without attacking at least some of the enemies, sometimes none of them which obviously is not possible in every single level. if you are willing to overlook the graphical issue Then I strongly recommend this to anyone who shares my love of classic action platformers Because as someone has been playing them for over three decades this is one of my absolute favorites And this new edition Was wonderful to be able to play
