Additionally, it has modern UI and gameplay. Enjoyable from casual to hardcore gamers. Looking at Slam and Roll (SR), it really reminded me of Snowman Brothers, which I'm only familiar with thanks to YouTube. Either way, it caught my interest, so I decided to pick up a review key for it.
Gameplay
From taking a casual glance at SR, it looks simple enough. With a variety of aliens occupying the stage, you'll fire all the sports balls at them, and when they're swarmed enough, you can kill them by launching the boulder they're encased in, which will kill other enemies too. An enemy has to be captured by enough of your regular projectiles, and then launched when they're captured, or hit by that larger projectile, in order to be killed. Despite this odd but basic premise, the mechanics get complicated because of all the nuance given to many of these features. For instance, you can add extra projectiles to that blob so it glows red and gains more power when launched. Not only that, but while it's rolling around, you can either be part of it, or launch it upwards to change its trajectory. Most of the other elements occur after enemies die, as they'll either drop food you can gather for points, or a variety of power-ups. These power-ups have a range of effects, such as speeding your character up, letting you double-jump, drop down through platforms, or triggering an extra effect when launching enemies. Unfortunately, I think all of these additional effects make for too many factors to worry about at any given time. Some of them don't even seem that powerful, such as the double-jump, but in specific situations, it can be useful. During stage 1-12 of Tour Mode, when there's an extra challenge to reach the top without attacking any enemies, being able to leap twice over the enemy would make it easier, although it isn't required. The fact there's so many variables that can be taken into account, but likely won't, makes it more of a nuisance to respond to any given stage, “Oh right, I can't drop down through platforms, so I died.” https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3373349475
Controls
With my experience playing older games, I found the default control scheme somewhat unusual, as jumping and shooting projectiles seemed backwards to me. That can be changed in the options, although it also alters how you navigate through menus, which seems a little silly. I'm fine with how to get around your menu, it's the character handling I wanted to change.
Story
Aliens are invading the planet, but are more interested in stealing our monuments than conquering the land. It's not really clear how, but a handful of kids with sports equipment are able to fend them off. Then again, if I learned one thing from movies in the 80's and 90's, kids who are lackluster in sports can accomplish almost anything, especially if they're underdogs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3373347666
Visuals
A strength of games from this era is that all of the action was contained in a single screen, but in this case, the layouts are often too large, requiring a screen scroll effect. That's not a good combination when enemies may just be out of sight, as you jump towards them, especially when many of their projectiles and attacks ignore walls and floors, unlike yours. I would give them credit for fairly unique designs though, as the enemies aren't ones I've seen before. In addition, if you were to pay attention to the background, it'd pertain to the area of the world you're at, although with your focus on the foreground, it doesn't grab your attention that much.
Sound Design
As you travel to different regions of the world, a different background song will play accordingly. I didn't really recognize a clear theme to the various tunes, as the one for North America didn't sound especially native. Despite this, with each region having a unique song for its 12 levels, there's enough variety they won't outstay their welcome. Plus, there's a boss theme, which does a good job of hyping up the battle, even though later ones get annoyingly large health bars. The alien sound effects, such as their laughs, seem oddly unfitting, probably because they're only the same height as a bunch of kids. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3373348777
Pros
🌟 With the wide range of sports available, it's interesting to see different options based on what character you choose. I'm just not sure about the execution. 🌟 The various game modes would help extend the game's playtime.
Cons
❌ Too many factors are stacked against the player. You die in one hit, helpful power-ups aren't permanent abilities, enemy attacks penetrate through walls/floors, your base speed is lower than enemies, etc. ❌ You can customize elements of your character appearance, but scrolling through one at a time isn't efficient. It should bring up a grid of various colors, so you can freely pick whatever looks best.
Tips
🔍 I don't know if they're included in every stage, but you can find transparent boxes, about the same size as your character. Hitting it with your projectile will spawn points or unlockables. 🔍 When possible, getting to the top and launching an enemy has a decent chance of hitting other foes.
Final Thoughts
I'm aware that achievements were included after the game was launched, but I still look at the low clear rate for many of them as a bad sign. Although I think the power-ups not being permanent is a factor, I'd say a bigger hurdle is how the level design hinders your ability to attack enemies. If you don't want to die instantly from any contact, you need a bit of leeway, so puny platforms are mostly worthless. Depending on which character you chose, and the angle of their projectiles, a slight slope is enough to frustrate your ability to hit enemies. The amount of anger I feel when I'm on the same platform as an enemy, but can't hit them due to a steep hill, is quite high. For an example of screw you game design, 4-12 serves as a great example, especially if you attempt the bonus challenge of not attacking enemies. With the double-jump, you're able to take a more direct route, where your primary obstacle is two enemies at the end, who pincer attack you with projectiles. I failed the one chance I had at dodging this, and now have to take a route where two enemies are confined into a small space I have to traverse. Stages like these aren't designed well, and is the consistent issue throughout SR. Giving a cute gimmick to a stage can be fun, but it shouldn't punish a player for not having optional power-ups. Through multiple sessions, I made some progress in Arcade Mode, since it saves your current place, but I kept getting frustrated by obnoxious levels. Due to the game not being much fun, I wouldn't recommend SR. Another great game developed by Kaleido_games. Without ever having played Snowbros before, I embarked on the adventure of Slam and Roll. I absolutely loved it. Like most games I enjoy, I pushed it to the limit. The goal of the game is quite simple: save historical monuments from escaping enemies. Initially, the game offers three modes. A fourth will be available after certain actions. TOUR, ARCADE, and CHAOS modes. Chaos mode is the equivalent of a *weekly challenge mode. Initially, there are three characters available to choose from. Several more will be added. The first mode offered is World Tour. A complete exploration of all the levels hidden across several continents. Each continent has its own distinct music and each stage has its own unique design. I must say that even after several rounds, the music remains enjoyable to listen to. All the designs chosen and created for each level are very original and pleasant to watch. I'd even say it adds an educational and intriguing aspect. In ARCADE mode, the level selection is more condensed and more challenging. The designs of each level have been reworked, and the enemies are faster and more devious. CHAOS is an even more difficult mode, but with far fewer levels to choose from. Leaderboards are offered for each different mode. All the achievements work very well! I had a great time playing Slam and Roll, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys good old-fashioned arcade platformers.
A very well made, Snow Bros inspired, arcade game, featuring various sporty characters to unlock and select instead of snowmen. There are 4 modes to play (Tour, Arcade, Hard arcade and Chaos), complete with leaderboards. Very addictive! (9/10) EDIT: Arcade mode is indeed a true arcade experience and one of the best I've seen this year!
This is a love letter to games like Parasol Stars and Bubble Bobble, which are two of my personal favourites from the bygone era of console and arcade gaming. While this game may bare a striking resemblance to the games mentioned above, it does this with its own unique style and has a more modern but keeping the "Retro" look. You can play single player or co-op in any of the humongous amount of stages on offer, 200+ if I remember correctly. Pick your character from a roster of cool dudes and dudeettes, unlock more as well by completing the levels. Gamerplay is mixture of platform jumping, dodging, shooting or hitting enemies until they turn into a ball, you then ride or smack the ball to take out other enemies. This game is so much fun and offers a challenging curve in the later levels, my review was single player only but I have since played co-op and it adds that extra special something to make an already awesome game, even more awesome. Graphics are colourful, funky and look Retro but modern, characters and enemies are well drawn, animated, very colourful and look great, sound and music is also good and suits the game. The game also has extra modes and a crazy chaos mode if you want a super hard challenge! GamerPauly Says... Get YA MONEY OUT! Highly recommended for single or co-op play. 100% recomendado
For all the snow bros fans , this game is a must! The gameplay is familiar but with an added twist , which is that you can deflect/bash the rolled up enemies around the arena like it's giant pinball machine. The retro artstyle and presentation were all well done and there is a lot of content here apart from just the arcade mode. The chaos mode was a personal favourite of mine . Tried a bit of the coop mode and it works really well . Pros(+) +Presentation +Gameplay +Pickups +Character customization +Content variety +Leaderboards +Coop Cons(-) -Enemies could be telegraphed a bit better ____________ I'm kinda mad at steam for hiding this niche indie game from me for soo long but I'm glad that I got my hands on this .
Slam and Roll is a recent homage to the early 1990s arcade genre of the "elimination platformers": single-screen platform games where you have to go around defeating every single enemy (usually with a gimmick of some kind) to pass to the next stage, and having to fight a huge boss at the end of each world by using its own spawned minions as weapons against it. Think of it as a mix of Tumblepop and Snow Bros. (or Nightmare in the Dark if you want something more obscure), but with sports implements instead of snowballs or vacuum cleaners. Basically you throw balls of various kinds against the baddies, engulf them in a bigger ball, then push this one to make it roll around the stage and hopefully crush all the roaming baddies with it, to conjure food items for points or bonuses that improve your stats (speed, double jump, bullet power, bullet range, shot frequency etc.). Completing each world also unlocks a different sports person (table tennis, football, baseball etc.) each one with their own stats, pros and cons. But there's more: the balls in which enemies are trapped can be supercharged, and when they explode after rolling they turn all baddies caught in the explosion radius into more valuable points items, and there's different explosions (sphere, vertical column, horizontal column), so you have to keep track of the stage's conformation and enemy movement if you want to maximize the score. Also: you can just defeat all enemies and call it a day, but to gain stars in the "Tour" mode you'll have to trap enemies and use as few balls as possible to defeat them, up to and including a huge bonus score if you manage to crush all enemies in a stage with a single ball. So, it seems a simple game if your goal is just to survive (and you have infinite retries while in "Tour" mode), but if you want to play it as the chase for the highest score, or play it in Arcade mode where lives and continues are limited and you have to gain them, there's actually a lot of subtle strategies that expand upon the original 1990s games. There's also a lot of hidden items and whole new stages gained by hitting the semi-transparent "windows" in the stages. If that wasn't enough, completing Arcade mode also unlocks a harder difficulty, and there's also Chaos mode, where stages are filled to the brim with enemies and you can cause chain reactions to pick up dozens of items at once and rack up huge scores! Tour mode itself is more than 100 stages long, not including the whole secret area unlocked by gaining enough stars in the various stages; it will get you busy for quite some time. I really liked these kinds of games in arcades back in the day (even though I wasn't great at them), and I can say that Kaleido Games did a quite good job in reviving them in a way that feels authentic to the time, including graphics and music (also included the panoramas and monuments for backgrounds, just like the ones in Pang and Tumblepop)... however, it seems that the general public wasn't too interested in them, given how few people managed to get the Steam achievements (seriously, I never thought I'd be able to get an achievement claimed by 1% of the players...). Too bad since it's a rare example of retro-style arcade-y game done right. My only problem is that stages that are not a single screen, i.e. the ones where you have to climb, or the final unlockable stages that are horizontal gauntlets of jumps and traps, are really frustrating since the gameplay isn't really studied for this kind of platforming challenge, especially if you lose a life and with it all the bonuses and power-ups gained up to that point. Also it's annoying that you can climb down platforms only after picking up a specific power-up, while enemies can do it with no problem and track you from anywhere (mosquitoes and lightbulbs especially). But for the rest I think Slam and Roll really manages to capture the feel of those old games (cheesiness included) and gives you hours of fun (and occasionally rage-inducing) gameplay in return.
The game is pretty fun, although the last few worlds will whomp on you a bunch. The first few areas on the Tour mode will ease you into the levels and enemies pretty nicely. After a bit the simple mechanic of defeating all enemies at once was difficult to pull off. Every enemies basically gets and upgrade every few levels so you know what they can do and then a bit more. Some of the enemies are more easy to dodge and slam than others. Figuring out the pattern to get three stars and also find all the hidden passport pieces was difficult, but possible. The final areas will test your game knowledge and made me take a few breaks to get through. After 8 hours I was able to get enough stars and beat the final final boss. Jimmy was my mvp for the last few areas with his jumps and running speed. Slam and Roll definitely has the old arcade style difficulty that you have to take a picture of the ending to prove to your friends that you beat it like when I was a kid. I'm really glad the final boss let's you have a checkpoint, I don't think I could beat all the forms in one go!
