I've sunk so many merchant vessels, I should be tried for war crimes not given medals man those poor bastards were just fishing for cod or some crap instead they caught a torpedo or a cruise missile because I got paranoid and sonar didn't verify them in time oh well, overall neat game
Being a fan of Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" book and the video game, I was intrigued that "Cold Waters" proclaims itself to be the successor to "Red Storm Rising". I'm really into naval combat and naval simulations and this game falls under my scope of interest - it offers a number of submarine platforms that I can command such as the Sturgeon class, Los Angeles class, and Sea Wolf class. "Cold Waters" is not easy to play at all, not even on the easy setting. I've been playing 60 plus hours on the easy setting and I'm just starting to understand some of the strategy, thanks to YouTube videos. I recommend this game to anyone who is interested in submarine simulators and naval combat. I don't think it's for everyone and is much more of a niche game. I enjoy it and will continue to play.

Really wanted to like this one as I have many fond memories of playing Silent Service II. However, the controls for Cold Waters are frustratingly inconsistent. Going through the process of marking a bearing and firing a torpedo works sometimes, and other times you press the same buttons and the sub just sits there like Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman are arguing over what to do next.
Was good when it came out, not anymore, the enemy is immune from everything less for your weapons, getting them hit by their own torps was part of the fun and the challenge. As always something good ruined by some dev idiot.
AI is simple minded, difficulty is produced through AI cheating.
I have beaten two of the three main story campaigns, and all of the 1984 period single missions, and I had fun doing so. But while I do recommend this as a good game, it is not for everyone. This is not a fast-paced arcade submarine game, you will need to read wiki pages. you will need to sit and wait while playing, even with the fast forward button. If you really like naval combat and want something tactical and realistic, this game is for you, and I hope you enjoy. Fun fact: the USS Seawolf cost 6 BILLION dollars to build. if you lose it, they will not give you another lol
It's a lot of fun! A great belance of realism and a good gaming experience. Sensors and weaponry is just the right amount of complexity. Perhaps due to my background I came into it with a lot of knowledge about these things, but it wouldn't be hard for a novice to pick up in the way the game presents it. No performance issues. Runs very smooth. The sand box is great, with good scenario building capacity. Just wish you could add friendly surface units in the scenario editor. It's a great offline game too if you're without internet at any point.
Its a very fun enjoyable game that will 100% make you ♥♥♥♥ your pants repeatidly Get when on sale because no updates =
I've owned and played all Silent Hunters-Crash Dive and U-boat. some have been present games to play. Others have made me tear my hair out!! I've only played this Sub game for 8 hours, all in the tutorials and have had a"BALL"-- meaning fun!! The game is enjoyable -you don't have to be a naval admiral to play.
first few missions are fun, then it becomes same old same old. find a target, launch on it, dodge 5 torpedoes sent at you, hope they didnt bring aircraft, realize they did, then sit trying to get out of range for the next 15 min, wash rinse and repeat.
