In light of there not being a mixed option, this had to be a negative, but it's not a game I would say avoid at all cost, just be aware of what you're getting into. I'll also preface this by saying I've not played the second one yet, so don't take this as a criticism of the series as a whole rather than this specific game. As a concept, there's a lot of neat ideas here. You form groups of students who explore a large world made up of paths which are a chain of connected dungeons. You explore the dungeons, do some quests that mostly involve reaching new areas or killing a mini boss in the dungeons, etc etc. There's special party attacks, a host of spells, lots of dungeon traps that can be negated/worked around with various group compositions, buffs, and equipment, and a shed tonne of items that can be crafted into better gear. IN short, there's an awful lot to do even ignoring the 80 odd dungeons to explore, the majority of which randomly appear and change up on the paths. However, the game remembers what you've explored, and I'd argue that for the first 75% of the game I enjoyed myself doing that exploring, and had it stopped at that, I'd probably be giving it a thumbs up. So where did it go wrong? Class of Heroes is a classic example of why the phrase "Less is More" exists. The game is crammed with 100's of monsters, items, and levels to be farmed, so much so that it became impossible to balance and therefore they never bothered to, meaning that by the time you get near the end you are just wading through slogs of pointless rubbish while fighting with a clunky UI that would be insulting on a handheld, let alone the PC. Want to craft tickets to travel around the world? Get this item, then take it to your home school and trade it for a ticket. Only we're not going to give you one item, we'll give you three that all do the same thing and just clog your bags up. Want an item to cure poison? Here's the typical antidote, but you can also get Frog Innards, which does the same thing, but isn't it cool to have two inventory spaces filled at the same time? Want to craft weapons? First find the junk, then find the crafting material, which is tiered up to 6 times, and then add an extra rare metal, that comes in its own form as well as a dust that you can synth into a bar. You get the idea. And if you think you'll farm bigger dungeons for better items, think again, because every single lower item still drops in the biggest dungeons, meaning your huge bags are permanently full and you need to go through the awful menu of selecting item, selecting drop, selecting confirm drop, repeat, all with a couple of seconds lag between button presses. Want to add special bonuses that give extra damage against certain types of monsters to those weapons? Great! So for each type of monster, of which there's 8-10, you get an item that adds that specific bonus to low tier rank 1-2 weapons, another for mid tier 3-4 weapons, and another for high tier 5-6 items. There's ~30 items straight away. Awesome! But wait, there's also armour, and you want extra defenses against certain damage types? Same principle, and oh, look, we've got another 50 odd items for you to sift through. And if you think these item ranges would drop from the appropriate dungeons of that level, you'd be wrong, because all of the lower tier junk still drops in the higher tier dungeons, because who doesn't like sifting through 50+ items of junk in their bags every 10 minutes? This issue compounds even further when you add the Wizardry systems into play, whereby you have to identify EVERY ... SINGLE ... ITEM before you can do anything with it, even sell it to a shop. Add to all that an awful UI designed for the handheld console the game was originally made for, complete with said lag as you have to navigate menus, and tedium just ensues. This continues into the battles, where despite there being hundreds of monsters, most fights devolve into just spam Attack with your whole team ... until that no longer works, because somebody obviously realised that's the whole game and so in the final handful of bosses they upped their evade to such a high level on top of their damage so that if you don't one shot them with a specific party skill that bypasses said evade then you basically die. This is a game that's given you some 24 spells and zero reasons to use any but the 4-5 useful healing ones. You can bring your characters to level 100, to then resurrect them for even bigger stats. Why would you do this when everything can be completed with them under 40 and just spamming Attack or the "I win" party skill if the enemy evades like a ninja overdosing on speed? Because you can! Bigger is better, so not going all the way to 1000 was clearly a missed opportunity. The icing on the cake that set this review into negative for me was that there's a fetch quest with a gimmick to bring the item back and then refuse to hand it to the person. There is never any clear point that you're meant to do this to complete the quest, and there is a limited number of these items in stores around the world before you have to get them from drops. Yet for all the hundreds of items in the game, can you get these drops if you don't realise until you've given in all the store bought versions? Of course not. There's a similar dropped item that also sells straight to store for 1000g that drops non-stop, but the essential quest item, of which you apparently need 5 of, is almost impossible to find, meaning if you don't pick up on this gimmick before all these items are lost, then you essentially get locked out of later quests that don't open up unless you've completed this troll of a quest properly until you either A) spend hours/days hunting where this quest item drops, or B) just start a completely new game in a game that's meant to be designed to create multiple groups in the same playthrough. The fact that nobody in the design phase thought this would be a problem is quite simply staggering to me. If you're looking for a mindless dungeon crawler where you can just mash buttons and farm random spawns, there's value in this. I can see it being a decent enough purchase for those playing on the Steam Deck while they want to kill an hour here or there. But unless you're a hardcore dungeon, there's far better and less frustrating stuff out there than Class of Heroes Anniversary Edition.
not enough character models. i am the kind of person that enjoys matching character models to class and i like more choices of the way the races look like, game only has one pic of each gender. adventuring with 3 diabilos and 3 gnomes all of them the same appearance. i like more variety
on a scale to actual wizardry to modern rpg, it might as well be barely off from being actual wizardry. still might be worth checking out and playing if you want something a bit more unforgiving than the friendlier etrians. i had my time with it, i had fun, but man is it incredibly frustrating at times
Learned how to play the PSP version the hard way (hundreds of characters and recovery parties lost) so can't attest to the difficulty. For all those starting and struggling, if it feels like it's time to leave that's exactly when everything goes wrong so manage your risks:) Here's a list of pros and cons: Pros: - Amazing dungeon crawler with neverending levels of complexity for lots of replay-ability experimenting with different characters - Hard and unforgiving learning curve that feels so satisfying when you master risks vs rewards - Lots and lots of items, equipment, monsters, etc. - Quality of life upgrades from PSP like faster animations and button-spamming navigation which also speeds up progression Cons: - Menu navigation is a little weird with keyboard only and no mouse but I eventually got used to it. - This doesn't affect new players as much but the language translation is weird and the name changes throw me off. Drake -> Bahamoon? __ Dwarf -> Gnome? __ Omega Map -> Final Map? __ Paladin -> Lord? __ Frog Liver -> Frog Innards? __ Woodchip -> Wood Junk? __ Rapier is a weapon and junk whereas in the PSP version the junk is 'Dull Rapier' and weapon is 'Rapier'? If CH has updates, loading all item and character names from the PSP version would make more sense and be great for quality of life. I remember looking at player made guides for every part of this game that are now 15 years old, hopefully there'll be an official guide with some of the hidden stats revealed because there are so many items, race, and class stats I still don't understand.
This is a really great game Us vintage dungeon crawlers will be able to get into Im glad i purchased it
This game is stupidly unbalanced. Focus fire can carry you to the credit roll while other options pale in comparison.
Full review available here: https://treatyourgeek.co.uk/class-of-heroes-anniversary-edition-review/ Class of Heroes is an old-school dungeon crawler RPG from Zero Div, originally released for the PSP in 2008 and now remastered for current generation consoles and PC. I generally tend to enjoy RPG grinding and have heard of this series mentioned alongside the likes of Etrian Odyssey as hallmarks of the genre so when the chance came to review the game I jumped on it. However, as they always say “never meet your heroes”, the reality of the situation is a far cry from what many fans have proclaimed through the years. In all, while I can’t say I disliked all my time with this Class of Heroes and it does show glimpses of greatness, I cannot in good conscience recommend it. It works quite well as a second screen game where I could zone out and simply press attack and button mash my way through, but I would say the only reason to play it is from a gaming history perspective. 5/10
