IMPORTANT: This is not a JRPG.
This is a hardcore Wizardry-like DRPG (Dungeon Crawler RPG). You make a party up to six (three on the front, three on the back), gear 'em up, and dive into the dungeons. I'll give some tips in the latter part of the review. This series has a heavy emphasis on gameplay over story. It will also not hold hands and will be mean to you when RNG hits, and it hits really hard. The inverse is also true: If RNG is in your favor, you will make good progress. If you have not played a DRPG before, I recommend Labyrinth of Zangetsu first, as it teaches all DRPG gameplay fundamentals in the friendliest manner possible. If you've played other DRPGs like this before (Labyrinth of Zangetsu, Eliminage, etc.), then I highly recommend this series. This one (CoH1) has huge emphasis on random dungeon layouts and looting. The sequel (CoH2) has a better story (but still not the main focus), gameplay flow, and introduction of some JRPG mechanics (single MP pool and equipment per character, single item pool for whole party) but this is still a DRPG. The third game exists too, released here one and a half years later with not much advertising. I will not comment on it because I have not touched it before. And when I do, I will make a separate review there. If you've played other similar blobbers such as Etrian Odyssey or Mary Skelter series, you can't do fair comparisons as they are whole different beasts. EO is a mix of Megaten and DRPG. I haven't touched MS in a long while, but I can confirm it's much more story focused and has different mechanics (less DRPG-like).
Now let's focus on this game.
Apparently, this has been re-localized. My guess is that ATLUS was once involved back on the PSP versions. Now that they are gone, so do with their old localization. The new localization results in old guides using obsolete terms (Tension Gauge is now Morale Gauge) and names (Reiner to Ryna), but most locations do retain their names. I personally don't mind this, but this will cause a huge confusion and upset over fans of the PSP version. The game as a whole is sped up quite a lot. Like over twice or thrice times fast. You can navigate through the menus and maps (in which both you'll be doing a lot) very quickly. Saving is also super fast now that you're no longer dealing with the PSP's slow save menu. Like Disgaea, you don't need to go super far (i.e. reincarnation) to beat the game. As long as you're able to survive and deal much damage to bosses before they destroy you, you will reach your in-game graduation (main story end). And yes, there's a post-game if you want to go further.
Now for some beginner gameplay tips to enjoy this game and the series.

Save frequently. Make multiple saves - At least one in an institute and one while dungeon crawling. Like I said earlier: When RNG hits, it can hit your party either mildly or very hard.
Recommended Courses (jobs/classes) for your party are Fighter (tank & damage), Thief (unlocking doors & chests), Summoner or Mage (for magic offense), and Bishop (doubles as a Priest and Mage, can identify items).
Finish ALL the story (categorized as Class) quests on the Bulletin Board in the Library. It will give you a full rundown on mechanics, the game's lore (compatible races, which does matter gameplay-wise), and unlocking locations for progression.
Resting in any institute's dorm for MP is free. Combine that with your healer (Priest or Bishop) for free full party healing.
It's possible to have multiple parties deployed at a time, but this is absolutely unnecessary. You should just stick with one main party to the end.
In the beginning, only your three members on the front can Attack and the rest will Defend or use Breath/spells. This is normal. You want to grind in one of the first three dungeons for materials and gold (G) to slowly but surely gear up your entire party.
When introduced about, you do not have to worry and think about reincarnation/switching courses until post-game. This game is not that hardcore to beat. If your party can get through dungeons just fine, then leave it as is.
Store your loot in Particus Dorms. The ones your party should hold are some healing items, a Return Ticket, and maps for the respective dungeons. Your bag and party can only ever hold much...
When loading a save with your party already deployed outside Particus, select Explore then Resume to return to that party.
Save before reviving a dead party member. When being revived, they have a chance to fail and turn to ash, which is another shot at revival. If you fail this second attempt, they will be permanently lost...
Good luck and enjoy the game! Edit: CoH3 stealth-released here smh
This is an obviously dated game. I'm sure that, at time of initial release, it was a great game that was very engaging. Today, though, there seem to be a lot of strange design choices. This is the main problem for me: there's a lot of realism injected into a fantasy dungeon crawler that really detracts from the fun of the game. If you want to create a custom team, they start with the most basic equipment and nothing else. The party set-up is rows of characters, but even my created ranger class starts with a dagger, so he can't attack from the back row. The only thing that is free in this game is mana refills in the dorm, which you can turn into free health if you have someone with the heal spell, but adds a bunch of steps and good luck if you don't have that spell. Thieves can misidentify traps and, even if they correctly identify it, might still fail to disarm them. In my experience, traps aren't normally a big deal in jrpgs, but I've had my entire team wipe to a poison gas trap multiple times in the beginner dungeons. Did I mention that the developers included medical malpractice in this game? I've had characters permanently die after paying for them to be revived in the infirmary. Most of these annoyances can be averted by reloading a save and are reasonably realistic things to happen (doctor visits and inns aren't free, any professional can make a mistake, etc), but do these decisions really make the game more fun? I don't know if most of these problems become less significant in the late game (I've been playing for 8 hours and am still stuck in the two beginner dungeons), but the early game is so atrocious that I don't think I want to get to late game. TLDR: If you are someone who played it when it first came out, it seems to be a fine port. However, the new player experience is pretty terrible.
Very much a slow burn game based heavily off Wizardry mechanics. You start off being able to make as many units as you want with infinite re-rolls, though it can take a long time to get a high roll due to how the game does it. Its about a 9.1% chance to get anything above a 10, about 0.8% to get above 20 and 0.07% to get above 30 (With i think the potential cap being around 60?, cant remember where i read up on it). Either way, it can take quire a few re-rolls to get what you want and if you're one to have your eyes glaze over doing a task over and over, then you are bound to skip over a good roll. The units themselves have racial synergies and demerits, but its all min maxing in the end. Classes... really you can go with what you want between the front/back split, but depending on your experience in these kinds of games you might remember the need for a trap specialist and an identifier, everything else is just coverage for healing, teleportation, levitation, and clearing ailments since there is no way to resist them aside from luck. Having a backup is nice too due to the annoyance of some of the traps. Perma-death.... exists, but its something you're not bound to run into unless someone falls/party wipe and you neglect them for too long. You can save anywhere in the game however, taking only around 0.3s every time, so there is no reason not to scum before doing something and resetting if things goes to ♥♥♥♥. In true wizardry spirit basic gear is borderline useless. Besides the base weapon everything has 0 stats and anything you do find is an atk or def increase by a few points until you get much later in the game (enhancing is your friend). You start with no money unless you pilfer the pre-mades and trying to buy anything is actually impossible for a while. you can get around 800 from pre-mades and it costs 600 for a sling + 400 for ammo, so this gives you an idea, and your back row can't attack without some so it something you need to consider going for sooner rather then later. Also you can lose or gain one of the 6 main stats (str/agi/vit/int/spi/luk) when you level, but it all either evens out or goes positive after a while so its not as bad as it seems. Map progression in this game is what got me enjoying it since i have fun just moving around and uncovering everything. you DO have to buy maps for every dungeon until you get to a certain point, whether you figure out that point is up to your want to grind. Though if i was to complain about one thing it's the mini-map. It's very basic and i'm glad to have it as i move around, but there is no directional indicator so say you hit a spinner and you just see your indicator flies off into a random direction. Also when you encounter fights while strafing or moving backwards, you physically turn towards the encounter and that can mess with your mental perception of your positioning. It honestly just makes me appreciate other games that have it since it's not something you realise you need it until it's not there. Some maps are tedious as hell to complete but i don't mind since the feeling of actually completing it feels good and multiple dungeons reuse maps, so once it's done then you don't have to do it again. Difficulty-wise, its not that hard, even if you sit on the highest difficulty for more exp gain and forget to set it back. I didn't need to put as much time into this game as i did but i do enjoy outfitting my team to the best of my ability. That said, i made a multi-magical bishop (Wiz+Healing) and never once casted an offensive spell throughout the entire game. Everything was beatable with either auto-battle attacking or team blasting. This isn't something i care about mind-you since i'm all about the map completion, but needed mentioning anyways. Ending thoughts: It is a game i recommend people to play in order to dip your toes into a Wizardry-like game that has limited access to money, gear, inventory and slowing piecing together your team through drops. You can appreciate the little flex-abilities it has, regardless of which part of a dungeon-crawler you like.
This game has the best and worst features of a JRPG. I spent 100 minutes in one session, 90% of it rerolling for the bonus stats in character creation. This bonus permits the player to add points to the character's attribute scores to qualify for higher-tier classes like Lord and Ninja. To me, this is a time-honored tradition, and I've played numerous games with a similar feature at the character creation stage, so it's a plus in my view. The big negative is the lack of a dungeon map. This is a dungeon crawler that offers a first-person view of the environment. In the past, I would dutifully use a pencil and paper to mark my movements one square at a time. But we're talking back in the 80s and 90s. RPGing has progressed in the last 3 decades so that players should expect to see an automap feature for dungeon crawlers. The lack of one for Class of Heroes is a big negative and enough for me to give a thumbs down. Additionally, the (starter) dungeon is harsh. My party stepped into an electrified square and a member died while the rest lost half their health. No resurrection, so I'm stuck with a dead weight in the party while trying to find the exit. Granted, it's not the first time I encounter this situation in an RPG, but not for a starter dungeon. The difficulty curve is a tad too high for me, so I'm unlikely to play this game again (when I have tons of other unplayed, similar games in my library).
Know this phrase is over-abused but it probably needs to be said Wizardry like Dungeon Crawlers are like the Darksouls of its genre; difficulty is kinda the point, complaining about the difficulty makes no sense, you just need to "get gud". (Technically Dark Souls owes its inspirations to Dungeon Crawlers and not the other way round but that's a whole different post.) With that out of the way buy it if you are onboard for that experience if not, then don't its pretty simple. If you can get onboard with that idea then its a damn enjoyable game. In fact if you do like this stuff, the clunkiness and more difficult, and tedius than necessary bits are part of its charm or you're just gonna hate it. It does have significant quality of life over games like the old wizardry and even more recent titles (compared to wizardry) like Elminage Gothic. Personally prefer this one over the sequel by quite a bit. If you do like dungeon crawlers or want to get into them but prefer easier, more accessible games you can try the sequel, or even something like Saviour of Saphire wings on steam. *edit it does have an easy mode though so there is that* p.s oh yeah should mention something comparing it to psp version: its plays faster/smoother, graphics are sharp and upscaled, music is customizeable, it does have an easy mode as mentioned above, there is a gallery, better tutorials and it just feels better (and more fun?) to play imho than the psp version. However, your mileage may vary.
