Broken game. Those who intend to unlock all the achievements will be disappointed. I tried it several times, but each time the game froze in the icy forest just before the end (usual and bad ending route), so I couldn't fully complete the game. What I tried to solve the problem: Loading game saves, restarting the game, and a complete reinstall. All without success. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2906646806
TL;DR This VN offers a holiday slice-of-life presented with below average writing style and full of grammar and spelling errors. I didn't find it an enjoyable read, but thankfully it was short. While there is potential here, I can't recommend this VN in it's current state for anything more then a quick way to get a few pretty holiday achievements. 4/10 stars SUMMARY A miserable, depressed person has long rambling musings about life and the Christmas spirit. STORY "I live all my life in a state of negativity, or indifference." - so speaks the main character at the start of this Christmas Tale. The story goes on in a slice-of-life fashion, and as situations come up you can choose to help others or not. The end of the story rates your actions with a score, and then will sum up what you have experienced. CHOICES Your choices do matter, and there are 3 different endings to achieve - bad, usual, and good. CHARACTERS The MC (main character) is a whiny complaining cynical guy - he finds no meaning in life, and often sees the worst in things. Constant misery and swearing populate his rambling musings. This character displays the same personality as the MC's in the 2 previous VN's I've read by this developer. (My Personal Angel and Say Goodbye) After reading three VN's by this developer with three nearly identical MCs, I'm now feeling a bit cynical that the developer can create a MC with a different personality. This is not a novel to read in front of or with the younger set. As in the previous 2 VN's I read by this developer, most characters often speak with frequent swearing and f-bombs - this VN it seems even more prevalent though. For example, when the MC asks an elderly lady if she needs help crossing the street, she responds with a string of swear words. Despite the holiday season, people in this story seem to have an even more surly and rude attitude then the developer's previous VN's. PRESENTATION Overall, I found this VN's presentation to be below average. English is not the original language of this VN, and the translation is full of spelling and grammar errors. I found it difficult to read because of the translation shortcomings. The character art is simplistic. The same character stock art was re-used from previous VN's by this developer. As you only see two other characters in the story, it's not a huge issue though. A few of the backgrounds are quite pretty, and I like the falling snow effect. The falling snow effect does have it's shortcomings though - for example, when you see the falling snow effect by a window in your room looking outside, the falling snow is in a square so you also see falling snow on your curtains inside your home. There is no CG gallery. A DLC is available which contains 4 wallpapers. The music was unremarkable, and there is no soundtrack included or available as a DLC. The DLC claims to give an additional option for music, but it did not work for me (I found no change in music in the game, and no way to set/change/enable the DLC music). TECHNICAL This installed and ran OK under Windows 7, 32 bit. There is no steam overlay or steam cloud. There is no control for music and sfx, they are *always on* at a preset volume you cannot control. There are no choices for screen resolution. The game started in windowed mode. As you read, there is a small black square in the upper right corner that takes it into full screen. Those seem to be your only two choices. Only the first save slot worked for me. You cannot save at a choice screen (but for this VN, you can get by with only one save slot for all three endings). Skip is available from the start, but skipping is painfully slow. The delays from scene to scene are terribly laggy. Snowfall and day/night transitions in lighting slow it down even move. There is a scene at the end where you take a walk in the forest and you are stuck there, just staring at the background of snowy trees for several minutes. The first time it happened I literally thought my computer locked up, but after experiencing it on multiple readings it appears the extensive delay is part of the VN. This also happened in other VN's by this developer, and I think they use the delays as a way to get the reader to feel they are "part of the scene". For me, I found that rather then setting the mood, the extensive delays ruined it. "You've earned X points out of 10". Huh? I was initially confused what the main character was speaking of, then I realized it was showing the total "score" of our choices to us. If we're "playing for points", that's fine - but I don't think that needs to be announced to the player near the end of the story. for the final verdict, it gets a ... THUMBS DOWN While I did find reading the story's good ending was OK, dealing with the constant transition delays and horrible translation did impact my ability to enjoy the story, not to mention all the swearing! I feel holiday novels should be a bit more optimistic and uplifting, and I didn't get that feeling from reading this, even with the good ending. Cleaned up and properly translated, this could be an interesting short read. In it's current state, I can't recommend this VN as a good read. If you're looking for a few cute holiday achievements for your showcase, you can find them here. Sadly, that's all the positive I can say about this VN.

Christmas Tale, unluckily, is a small visual novel that presents lots of problems and issues from its launch. First of all, it starts windowed and loads some kind of engine before getting the full name in tray (Christmas_Tale); it features no main menu at all and the only thing you can click is a Christmas tree blue ball on the lower right part of the screen. The game though opens without a single click - you'll start your journey in a snowy environment with the text flowing down. If you click on "return to main menu".. you'll return back to that screen, meaning that actually the game has no menu at all. And no settings too - the full-screen (still windowed) mode will have to be selected manually, and on clicking that blue ball you'll only be able to restart the visual novel, save or skip the text. In my playthroughs everything was bugged, the skip option won't function, the text was lagging here and there and so on.. Of course, the most annoying things were the extremely badly drawn pictures and overall backgrounds and such and, above all, the dialogues - the script is full of spelling and grammar errors, and although it is a short game (which takes about 30 minutes overall to finish) it's still a boring and annoying experience given the load of errors and the shallow story. I'll pass over the soundtrack, since it consists just of random ambient instrumental tracks taken from who knows where. The graphics are awful, really. The backgrounds are totally different from the characters, and the characters are nowhere nearly drawn as the usual anime/manga things.. they look like MS Paint trials made by a kid, everything's colored with the same hue, there's really nothing beautiful about any single character. The backgrounds drawn in the same style are well, even more awful to see while here and there there are some more beautiful wallpaper-like backgrounds that add nothing to the game though, apart from some Christmas atmosphere. We're lucky not to have any option to see again wallpapers, characters, pic galleries and so on given the poor quality of it all.. The story and the dialogues, even without talking about the game issues like the lag and the bugs, aren't really worth it, trust me. I'm no native English speaker and I've never studied English, I don't even like Germanic languages that much, but I found it so so difficult to follow this visual novel. It's literally full of errors, both in grammar and in spelling, and the story itself is very shallow. It revolves around the usual romance things, depression, darkness, gloom, sudden choices, new characters introduced, some choices to make.. And the total lack of an user friendly interface makes it even more difficult to progress - apart from the hidden skip button, actually you're bound to click since no keyboard shortcuts work at all. The whole point system, which is linked to your choices and will affect a few endings, is never even explained and well, the choices are few and there's really nothing remarkable apart just from the first positive ending I found but yeah, I should be paid for reading through all of this.. xD The whole game doesn't fit up in a Christmas positive scenario, it's rather a poorly written story set in December.. with a negative vibe going through it all, few characters, few locations, few choices to make, few (three) endings and nothing else. Though, I found the lack of depth and the bad English two huge mistakes, and at times the dialogues are really, trust me, hard to read. Or they just keep on going through repetitions of the main character's negative attitude and such. All in all, given that this isn't in early access, it's a visual novel that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Crappy English, crappy storyline and crappy graphics make a crappy short game.
Jingle bells, Jingle bells, Batman Smells, Robin laid an Egg.... It's almost that time of year again.. the fat guy in a red suit and sack... Not your Drunk Uncle Larry, but the man himself old Saint Nick,, a time for giving, a time for receiving a time for going into soul crushing debt.. Anyway,, the game in question is Christmas Tale - Visual Novel.. The Story You play as a character on Christmas Eve, he's depressed... I think, and he wants to buy tickets for some kind of show... I think... He does a bunch of random stuff.. and then the end???? Gameplay The game jumps right into the fray, you select your name and then jump directly into the game, no main menu, or options or anything else... The game plays like alot of other visual novels, you press a button, read text, and make a few choices which are supposed to have an effect on the game.. Pro's... It has Chrismas in the title??? Easy achievements, get another complete game in little over an hour.. Cheap price Con's poorly written (could be a translation error) like 5 total backgrounds in the game.. Window with Snow, Bed, Neighbors door, town, and forest.. Very generic, choices barely matter and alter like one line of text.. Not funny, not sexy, it's just meh, what is this game's purpose. Really short Recommendation I honestly can't recommend this game, unless you're able to get it for under fifty cent and even then many other games would be far more worth the fifty cent.. On top of the massive translation issues, the game suffers from technical issues, for a game this short having any technical issues is just inexcusable. The game could have been better if the choices made drastic differences in the game, instead of having one or two different lines in the next sentence.. Maybe introduced a few new characters, flushed out dialog, or anything else to make the game interesting and unique. Seems like something someone put together using Visual Novel maker in a matter of about 2 hours.. For a commercially sold product it's just not worth the price.. The only positive is the +1 and achievements which will give you an easy +1 to your completed games...
Honestly, I'd recommend this game if it weren't for the poor grammar and writing. I had trouble trying to piece together what the dialog was trying to say.
Flawed, almost pointless visual novel.
In my quest to complete and review some holiday-themed games of mine this month, I stumbled upon Christmas Tale. Visually, it's got some nice-looking backgrounds, and two manga-style characters at certain slots. Story has the main character contemplating the meaning of Christmas and deciding to help (or not) various people. Seems simple and nice enough? Unfortunately, the main character (who is never shown) is a hateful little prick with a depressing attitude about everything, even (or rather especially) when helping people. I disliked him at virtually every sequence. The translation seems off. It is English alright but it's often written in a peculiar way. There are sudden curse words in many places.
Broken ending?
When I first started the game, it begins in the end right away (something I discovered after my first playthrough), displaying a score of some kind. Then, after the playthrough the very last scene hangs and the game ceases progressing. Therefore, it was not possible for me to see the different ending scenes. Maybe this was because I somehow gained more than 10 points (which was claimed as the maximum)? Over the playthrough, choices have no effect at all. They only affect the ending score (and I suppose ending if it managed to trigger properly).
Technically incompetent
Not sure if this is because of the chosen engine but usually in visual novels you can also rewind text. Well, in this one you cannot rewind and saving only works for the first 4 slots - the 5th one doesn't seem to apply, and it would not let me save over the previous saves. There is a skip text option but it is rather slow because for whatever reason it takes relatively long for each text sequence to appear. So, it was a slow and not very pleasant string of replays looking for the achievements. There's fullscreen option but no in-game muting of sounds/music (just use the volume mixer if you wish to: alt+tabbing works fine).
Not worth it
This was not a particularly pleasant read-through, that lasted about 30 minutes, and it would have been faster if the text were not so slow to appear. The ending's broken, translation's not great, and the story is (without ending anyway) uninspired. There's a guide for achievements but even finally following that I was only able to gain 5 out of 7, since two failed to unlock for me. In its current state, I think it's not worth to play even if it was free. ~Twistorian Curator~
Ignoring all the grammar and saving issues, what I disliked the most wasn't that it feels incomplete, but rather that it's broken. Trying to get the usual or bad ending freezes the game, preventing me from fully finishing Christmas Tale. The only positive thing about this game I can give is that there's a skip button in the menu, unfortunately it can't be used to get passed the bugged area that is the frozen forest. Since it can't be fully completed due to being broken, I believe it's not worth any amount of money until the problem is fixed, however since the game's been out for over five years, that seems unlikely.
just bad..
