This game is packed with charm. I didn't play of lot of GameBoy era puzzle/platformers, so the closest game I can relate this too is something like Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland. This game is top down instead of being a side-scroller, but it features the same hub-world to enter levels design. The premise of the game is that you roll around your walnut around the levels and use it to trigger switches you can't reach by jumping. You can also fling it to send it flying. There are 5 worlds, each of which has 2 levels to solve, each ending with a Zelda-esq puzzle boss fight. You can also search for seeds that can be traded at the shop to unlock music tracks and color palettes. Overall, my favorite part is the music! The worlds, bosses, and characters are all oozing with charm, but nothing beats those 8-bit tracks. I think for the price point, this is well worth it. You'll get at least a couple hours just beat the game normally, with an achievement for beating it again on the hardest difficulty. Chico would probably also be a blast for speedrunners, since precision is well rewarded. Overall, I highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a highly polished short adventure! Looking forward to more from Daikon Games!
Howdy! I think i've played enough Chico to give my pro review. TLDR I like it, but is a little rough with the gameplay. Anyway, here it goes: Starting with the pros, graphics are super good in regards to giving that gameboy aesthetic, right down to the graphical effects, color, animations, and little visual touches. It also nails that links-awakening look while doing its own thing and making the most of a purposefully-limited tileset for each world. Music can be hit-or-miss, but man sometimes it does so well and those sound effects are top notch! Gameplay also does a lot of neat things. Despite its Links-Awakening look, it actually feels a lot closer to the GBA Frogger games in my opinion when it comes to platforming and puzzles. Also, there are some really unique mechanics in this game. Going through the first four worlds and just entering the tree, I really liked the haunted house so far (also well-balanced and fun!). That does lead to the spooky cons (ooh spooky!): Much of the level design, mechanics, and bosses can feel pretty rough. One example is the first world I went to (the cloud world), which I actually found the most difficult as it required a lot of tight platforming over disappearing blocks, also of which your character can slip off the edges. The boss in that world was also very confusing, as the only way I saw to hurt it was to use the disappearing blocks to make him fall, but only when I attack him and he deflects my attack. That boss overall felt wonky and not a good match for the mechanics I learned in the stage (though I will say the bosses of the other worlds are fantastic imo!). Other worlds seem to also have a few instances of confusing, buggy, or sometimes frustrating platforming or logic that I really feel could have been detected and cleaned up with some playtesting (note: I also believe that many of these issues can be solved over updates too!). One last little con I also noticed: So far I havent been getting a big sense of the story yet. Maybe its like old games where the story is mostly in the manual, but some more cutscenes would be nice. All in all, I love me some retro game boy puzzle games, and this one is it! I've been playing this a lot on my Steam Deck, hoping to see the remaining cool world mechanics and reach the end. Thanks so much for making this game. Well worth the price!
Short puzzle where you bounce a walnut around a stage. First and foremost, there is an issue with the game's start. When you click on the icon, it runs in the background without doing anything. It takes around a minute or two for the main game screen to appear. Everything works properly once you enter the game. The graphics are simple, but that's because the game is based on vintage handheld titles with limited screens. However, the basic pixel imagery provides more than enough depth to keep the game enjoyable to watch. Although the gameplay does not fill up the entire screen due to the borders, you quickly forget about it. The borders can be changed with a few predefined graphics to make them even less distracting. While the game features colors, you can choose for an old-school look with two or three colors. Now for the game. The controls are basic because you can simply move, jump, and interact with your walnut. The walnut is your primary tool. Its most fundamental function is to press switches that open doors or create a bridge. The walnut behaves like a pinball since it can be launched at walls and bounced around. This is frequently the only method to get to a switch on the other side of spikes that your main character cannot pass through. Although it can fall into holes, water, or other hazards, the walnut will never be lost or stuck because it will respawn at the previous visited checkpoint. The walnut and your character have different checkpoints for respawning, although this is never a problem. Stages are small, with only a few screens where you must press switches, discover keys for the door, and collect coins. Although there are multiple worlds with various mechanics, each has only two stages. This means that the game is very short. Coins aren't necessary, however they will allow you to purchase new color palettes and a few tunes from the main hub. All stages are reached through the main hub, which gradually opens up. The difficulty level you select simply impacts your health points. While the hard difficulty with only one health may cause annoyance due to repeated backtracking and respawning at checkpoints, it isn't that bad. The game is actually fairly fair because collected coins remain with you even after death. The only drawback is that if you finish a stage and miss a coin, you'll have to play the entire stage again.
A very nice and charming game in which you roll a boulder without being a sokoban. Really loved the Save the Bees extra, that in my opinion, should be more explored, since it bring the puzzles a new side. Hope the devs make more games.
"Chico and the Magic Orchards DX" is an action platformer with a charming squirrel as a protagonist! Follow him on his adventures to get back home with all the walnuts he can carry and then some! ^^ Retro puzzler with good mechanics. Smooth gameplay with interesting features such as entirely fresh moves with and without the walnuts. Interesting enemies and good sokoban style puzzles. Above all it remains an action platformer as you'll face many danger than aren't only environmental! The music and colors used give it a real retro feeling yet it remains modern without the hiccups retro games tend to have. Modern features and conveniences along with a good menu and set of options for all tastes! Try now the DX version for post-ending gameplay that totally shakes things up! Try not to get stung! ^^ For more reviews, follow my curator https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44864435-Mewesome-Reviews/
This is such a great game. It has difficult platforming and well-designed puzzles that are challenging but never too hard! The aesthetic is so classic it really does feel like a lost gem. I only wish it were longer, but it's well worth the price! I'm a little over halfway (I think). The soundtrack is also fantastic and the various color palettes keep the look fresh.
The game takes a minute to load but runs smoothly after that. Its retro pixel art and customizable borders capture a nostalgic handheld vibe. With simple controls, you move, jump, and use a versatile walnut to solve puzzles, open paths, and hit switches. The walnut respawns at checkpoints, keeping frustration low. Short stages feature straightforward goals like collecting coins and finding keys. Coins unlock extras, but missing one requires replaying the level. Though brief, the game’s retro charm make it an enjoyable experience!
I just think it's neat.
A simple, fun, and cute game that I think pretty convincingly captures the feel of some of those less-famous but still enjoyable gameboy games you probably had as a kid... You know you probably have fond memories of at least one. ;) As a side comment, I had a technical issue pretty early on and the dev himself responded, which was very gracious of him! Definitely recommended for the price.
