This one is simple. Do you think it looks good? Then it is. It's probably even better. The unmistakable charm of a small game made by one guy is present in full force here, and it's a joy to play. You might say that a metroidvania that you only play on the map is just like any other top down exploration game, and you'd be kinda right, but it still flows like a metroidvania. Fascinating if you like arguing genres. It's small enough for backtracking to not be annoying, and big enough for exploration to be somewhat exciting. In the end, I wish it was a little bigger, but hey, better too small than too big. There is some post-game content like puzzles and whatnot but those I found... boring. I'd say just stick to the story mode. It's pretty good and gives you a satisfying experience. Cmon, just buy it already. And you can beat it in one sitting, too. A fun little metroidvania with really great music and without all those pesky lame graphics and platforming and boss fights. Just the essentials: 100%ing your map completion.
Short, but nice. Some extra content available for those that are inclined but not for me. Neat idea!
I played the concept version of this game on newgrounds and it was so charming I had to check out the full version. It's certainly a short game, but it's got a good sense of humor and lovingly crafted background lore. If the concept sounds fun to you, then you will like the game. It delivers, just try it. This is usually where I would put my favorite game feature, but my favorite part was the teleport sound reminding me of a malfunctioning VCR... um, sound design 10/10.
Short and sweet. It has a simple goal and it accomplishes it.
Way too minimalist. The tutorial lasts maybe 2 minutes yet it shows 90% of what the whole game has to offer. The main game mode is completely brainless, you simply explore every tile you can reach and eventually you find an item that lets you explore more tiles, rinse and repeat, without any sort of threat or puzzle or anything that might require the slightest amount of thinking: one of the last items you find straight up lets you walk through walls, which would be a massive powerup in any other game but here just shaves a few seconds off the map-filling. This main mode is also very short, easily sub-10 minutes once you know where you're supposed to go, yet might still overstay your welcome since that's 10 straight minutes of walking around with nothing interesting happening. Most alternative gamemodes are played on the same exact map as the main game mode, but with slight twists such as reduced sight distance or a different color palette: pretty much all of these play out the same way, once you memorize the map layout you'll breeze through them without a trouble. There are 40 puzzle maps, which are slightly interesting but also very short and not that varied. There are also 40 "zen" maps, that is maps where you simply walk around to fill a picture (you can see the Doge map in the store page images for an example): again, pretty brainless. Surprisingly, there is no support whatsoever for user maps. Overall, a disappointment.
Doesn't live up to the promise of the original. The short-form metroidvania is compelling due to its tight environmental narrative. The concept is mirrored here, but majorly broken down by an integral gameplay system: teleportation. This negatively effects the game in two ways. 1. The original game gave you a shovel and a hammer to break through walls and *EXPLORE*. This game
teleports you back and forth from world to world, increasing your sight radius very quickly and revealing the map, completely removing the exploration element. All that remains is to ping-pong around from teleporter to teleporter
until you've finished the game. Really not compelling. 2. This game is short. REAL short. One of the methods used to increase length in this game (compared to the free Kongregate version) was introducing multiple worlds.
This could work fine and great if those worlds were actually explorable but referencing the first point, you're teleported back and forth so quickly that the multiple worlds become meaningless.
I wish the exploration were slower paced, like the first game with more secrets to actually *FIND*. I wish there were more exploration tools, instead of just being "locked" out of certain areas. I LOVED the mechanic where, even though it was subtle, you had to choose between a shovel and a hammer to open a section of wall. I feel like that could have been expanded upon really well. The multiple worlds were massively underutilized and really needed to be fleshed out more.
I felt like all of them just became an extension of the space station.
I paid $3 for this game and finished it well within the return window. I'm not going to return it because I want this dev to make profit and go on to create more detailed games. I don't believe you should refund a game just because it's short.
Pure essence of metroidvania genre, without any sh*t from action games
