THE OG indie game. Made by one dude; Pixel (then ported by Nicalis). Play it through at least one time blind. It's an absolute masterpiece light-metroidvania with meaningful decisions in sometimes seemingly meaningless places. This game is like indie DOOM with how many ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ports of it there are. And they are all somewhat different.
You have:
The original (freeware) by Pixel (Daisuke Amaya)
Cave Story (WiiWare) published by Nicalis for the Wii
Cave Story (DSiWare) published by Nicalis for the Wii
Cave Story 3D published by Nicalis & NIS America (the people say this one stinks)
Cave Story published by Nicalis for 3DS (separate from Cave Story 3D)
Cave Story+ published by Nicalis for Steam
Cave Story+ published by Nicalis for the Switch
Cave Story ported to NXEngine (meaning you can run it on certain calculators & Android)
Cave Story ported to Sega Mega Drive/Genesis
Cave Story ported to Game Boy Advance
Doukutsu-rs
& Definitely more I'm not aware of
The Switch version of Cave Story+ used to be the most updated version until the Steam port was recently updated to include all content from the Switch version + modding support. You used to have to use Doukutsu-rs, a fan-made reimplementation of Cave Story, to replicate features from the Switch version because this port was neglected for so long.

MUCHO MÁS que una simple "historia de cueva", buenísimo, se lo voy a recomendar a absolutamente TODOS mis amigos porque esta de aquí es una obra maestra. Háganle una traducción al español oficial por favor, no sean como Toby Fox...
Best indie game I have ever played. I played it on the DS originally, and have played it on multiple different gaming consoles since.
This game was a wonderful experience to enjoy. I understand more how this game has inspired several other games that came after. The story telling is fantastic, the dialogues are strong but sometimes funky, and always engaging. The fact you have to throw in one last giant encore at the end to obtain the True Ending is something I truly approve of, as well. Games are meant to teach you lessons, and Cave Story has a lot to give in that regard: friendships, hardships, bittersweet victories, and tears for those who died so that others could enjoy the happy tomorrow. I greatly recommend trying this out together with friends!
Genuinely one of my favorite games of all time, logged countless hours on the Wii version, a bit on the shorter side but all the different weapons, challenge modes, and the hidden best ending add a lot of replayability. Also don't even think about trying hard mode unless you've already gotten the games best ending and have a good understanding of all the boss and enemy patterns, should be called insane mode instead.
Amazing game. The story is deep and unique. Gameplay-wise it's a metroidvania with more focus on fighting and encounters than exploration.

I really love Cave Story, it was my favorite childhood game along with World of Goo when I played the demo/free trial version on my Wii. Heck, it's the soul reason why games like Hollow Knight, Undertale, Cuphead, Celeste, Nine Sols, TBOI, and so much more were made if it wasn't for that one indie game that started it all. BUT, this port is really chopped. just play the doukutsu-rs instead unless you want to get those sweet achievement. (Some are almost impossible to get btw.) (Also it's Daisuke Amaya's game, not Nicalis's.)
pupy
