PERFECT GAME, BEST GAME ON THE TRILOGY BY FAR. To summarize, compared with the first 2 games, this one has the best bosses, best common enemies, best soundtrack, the best weapons and a fast travel system that helps a lot, back tracking is better and the story is also better. They even fixed area E (the plant area from the Blaster Master Zero 2). I can't describe how much I loved this game, seriously, it's perfect. What a great trilogy btw, you deserve a 10/10 on this one Inti Creates.
This is the first game in my Steam Library I've ever wanted to give a mixed review to, but I'm gonna it a thumbs down to balance out the review score, drag it down to reality a bit. To start off with, if you were invested enough in the story to finish BMZ2, then you need to play this game. It's very important to the lore, and should provide enough enjoyment to you story and gameplay wise to make it worthwhile. However if you don't care about the story, it's a little difficult to recommend BMZ3 on its gameplay merits (or lack thereof). It feels kind of like with the story arc that BMZ1 and BMZ2 set up, the designers either were rushed to get this done, or felt comfortable just not trying as hard with this entry because they have you already have you invested hook, line, and sinker. I'll be charitable and assume the game was rushed. It's hard to describe BMZ3's gameplay as anything but "not as good as BMZ1 or BMZ2 were". It simply does not live up to the standard of game design that those two set. I don't want to call it shovelware, but it's bordering on that a bit. There is not a single good area/zone/sector in the game. If you disagree, tell me what your favorite is and what you like about it. I think when forced to analyze the game piece by piece many people will struggle to find merit in the game's sections. They all range from bad to merely serviceable, with enemy designs, placements, and gimmicks that feel less like challenge and more like annoyance or padding. The top down dungeons lack identity, especially with the SF bases littered across the game. You're given the option to play through and deal with SF bots which tends to be not very fun, or go through randomized mutant rooms, which are a bit more fun but not by much. In both cases you are incentivized to just rush through the enemies rather than actually engage with them, as getting to the next screen is as good or better than killing them. In the randomized mutant rooms there are some kill rooms that can be interesting to fight in, but if they kill you then you might not see them again, cause it's randomized. It creates a pretty inconsistent difficulty experience. It doesn't help that a lot of rooms in the randomized layout pool are nothingburger designs that are pretty much just dead-air design. The non-SF Base dungeons aren't terribly impressive either, what few of them there are. There are quite a lot of infinite enemy respawns which further disincentives actually fighting instead of just rushing through. I also commonly got telefragged by enemies spawning on top of me. Again, it's more annoying than challenging. And this is even with me imposing harsh stipulations on my playthroughs. I have a Steam guide written up for stipulation ideas to make the game more challenging and interesting. It still ends up not being too hard though, at least for me. Without any stipulations it is easily the easiest BMZ game in the trilogy. The upgrades and unlocks are the least interesting in the series. Seriously, WARHEAD MISSILES are frequently used here, even up to the end. That's how slim the pickings are in this game. The bosses tend to be very uninspired and the game makes you fight several of them twice over. Like a lot of the game, they range from bad to merely serviceable. Except near the end... where the game has been backloaded with some of the best fights in the series. That last part is what makes this such an awkward review. The game feels simultaneously too short and too long. Too short because it is the shortest BMZ game in the trilogy and doesn't have any extra content or DLC unlike BMZ1 and BMZ2. Too long, because the gameplay feels like padding up until the endgame, where the game drops good fight after good fight on you as if it's apologizing for the rest of it. Overall I would say it is a mediocre game with a good story that leaves off with a good last impression. And I think that's worth something. I'm just disappointed that it isn't as good as it could have been. If the game didn't have those final good fights at the end I would call it a bad or mediocre game without hesitation. I liked the story though. I think people who are praising the game and calling it the best BMZ game are just really easy to please and mostly here for the story. Overall I had a good time with BMZ3, but that is despite its flaws. 6/10
Fun game. It is bit more challenging from the other two. They dropped the annoying pre-req of finding everything to get the true ending. You do have to have 2 rings and hit L/R button when the screen "cracks" to do actually finish the entire game.
Ya know, I didn't know the 2nd game had a sequel until a few years after. This game is great and it basically ends the story of Jason and his robot lover. The gameplay was improved greatly, coming in with new and familiar ideas. I wonder if the original creator of METAFIGHT ever thought their idea would go beyond the first og nes game? Glad it did, this was a fun series to get into. Would recommend if you like metroidvanias and tense top down shooting action.
Oh my god. This is the best game Inti Creates has made in well over a decade and I do not just mean comparatively. No, Blaster Master Zero 3 is genuinely amazing and has some of the best gameplay and challenge from their modern library, while still packing a plethora of inventive and cool ideas that work wonders together. I don't know what happened when the dev team got together for this one, but they locked the ♥♥♥♥ in and created a masterpiece. Ever since I first played the Mega Man Zero series back on DS with the original Zero Collection, I've been following Inti Creates to find something else that could offer that level of fun gameplay and satisfying challenge. You have no idea how good it feels to finally, FINALLY play another game from them that could kick my teeth in consistently. So many of their games from 2016 onward could be solved by holding forward and shooting to clear through almost everything in your way until you hit a boss and suddenly the game made you care briefly about what was happening. Blaster Master Zero 3 set out to change that, and I could not be happier about it. The regular enemies can finally be more of a threat and require more effort to take down instead of having the durability of a wet paper bag. The moment I'd been waiting for kicked in when I stumbled upon the first Sophia Force base, where I was immediately warned that it would be far more dangerous than anything else around and I should come back later. I decided I'd do some recon on the new area and get a feel for what I was up against here. I stepped inside, walls shot up around me, I got swarmed by four drones and they proceeded to rain missile-themed hellfire upon me until I became intimately aware of what the floor looked like. "Oh ♥♥♥♥. They actually meant it when they said it was dangerous! Nice!" I eventually realized grenades will delete those walls in one hit and warped my way to victory in each of those bases, but even as much as this tactic trivialized their traps, I still had to be careful if enough of them swarmed me. This was doubly the case for any bases with the bigger drones because if anything, ANYTHING set those otherwise passive mechs off, I was made into swiss cheese via laser barrage. I still had a reason to be careful and which made up for the ease of my aforementioned warp and grenade spam method. By far my favorite part of the game however is that the bosses now feel like a payoff for managing to reach them instead of being the sole thing to look forward to due to the fact they could survive long enough to potentially kill me unlike the fodder of the past games. These major bosses are especially delightful treat as they retreat to another dimension part way through the fight and you have to follow them. This shifts your gameplay between Jason's on foot segments and the tank segments and it's so damn cool every time. It's a wholly new fight each phase change with new patterns to learn and the frantic nature of the fights works with aplomb. The brief tune that plays as the boss flees and you need to switch dimensions to follow is so good for hyping you up for the next battle, too. Oh, it's such a great system! The major boss of Planet Stranga (the best part of BMZ2 returns, you love to see it!), which much like the rest of the planet was a fun remix of what we'd encountered before, was probably my favorite boss in the game up until the true ending area which knocked it out of the part with each and every one of its own remixed fights and unique final bosses. The boss itself I will not spoil, but man alive, what a rush! The second phase in particular was oustanding for scale. You feel like an ant in comparison to this goliath of a creature and it bombards you with a variety of attacks from the left and right as it charges up a super attack to add further tension to the fight, which after launching will immediately begin charging another one. Such a good battle and such a good way to keep you on your toes! I loved every second of this game. The feeling of satisfaction that surged within me as I saw multiple mighty obstacles fall before me as I barely scraped by some of these greater challenges, including defeating a boss you're expected to lose to, made for one of the best experiences I've had with an Inti Creates game since the Mega Man Zero series. Outstanding job. I'm in awe of how good this was. I regret cutting my journey through this series short after beating the second game all those years ago. Giving this series another shot was the right call. If there's anything you should play by Inti Creates thesedays, the Blaster Master Zero series is it. The third game in particular will knock your socks off and exceed expectations set by the previous two games by such a wide margin you won't know what hit you. I stayed up until 1 AM on a work night to marathon the true ending sequence. If that doesn't tell you how hooked I was, I don't know what will.
This game is so good that I actually took the extra effort to 100% the game by completing every piece of content the game has to offer. I think this game is much more of a Metroidvania compared to the second game in the series which is much more linear and guided, and it can get confusing for new players but I assure you the map will come in handy and does a great job at guiding where you'll need to go. It also points players at optional items that you can pick up which will make Jason's MA stronger. Some bosses in this game has three health bars which might frustrates some players due to the illusion on bosses' tankiness but if you actually manage to make use of all the main weapons and subweapons you can basically deal enough damage to deplete the bosses' health quickly, and yes some bosses have multiple phases which require you to go from MA fight into top down fights and if you die in any of these fights you'll have to start all over again. The game assumes you've played both BMZ 1 and 2, and that you're already familiar with the mechanics so they throw at you these multiphases fight which will test all of your technical skills from the previous games. Personally I really liked it, because it forces you to understand the bosses' attack pattern rather than just brute forcing your way through like in previous games. One character that I'm so annoyed with is Leibniz; they can't stop talking crap about Jason and always seem to disagree with what Jason is trying to do and the game tries really hard to paint them as this seemingly hateful but kind in actuality character but ended up making me hate them more. This game is such a great conclusion to the entire trilogy and I'm saying that despite knowing that there might be a fourth game which I will be the first person in line to play the game for sure. But if there isn't any I think BMZ 3 has done the trilogy justice as the cherry on the cake.
