If you loved Cally's Caves 3 and thought you wanted more of it, then this game is for you. Cally is still searching for the amulet to cure her friend's curse, which gets her to meet new friends along the way while kicking baddies backsides left and right. Cally's Caves 4, just like its predecessor, is an action platformer with shooting elements and many weapons to find and level up. Just like before, some levels have multiple exits for little detours or to reach a deadend level, and our friend Bera is back too to stamp a paw or two on those evildoers. I like the costumes Cally can use from the beginning (My preferred one is the second costume) and the strafe shooting by holding down fire letting Cally shoot in a direction even while walking back feels great. My only complaint would be with the menu UI and the UI design in general, although I liked the LOST numbers in the menu in windowed mode. I only made it to the end of the 4th zone so far but I feel comfortable recommending this game because it's a lot of fun.
I played the entire CC series. I really liked the series; yet, I feel that playing only one game of the series is enough to experience what CC can offer. My recommendation for this experience is CC 3, not this one. Story-wise CC4 is similar to its precedents except for this time Cally is not trying to save her parents. Lloyd is still there to assist - to play his guitar. The aim is to find an amulet to help Cally's friend Rupert who still sells stuff even everything was done for him. Apparently business is business. There are a couple of surprises; yet, this is not a noticeable game for its story. On the other hand, gameplay-wise this game has some alterations, the most important of which is the capability to shoot continuously while retreating. Although this is useful, it causes some unresponsiveness on the rotation buttons. There are new gun modes, which are not really necessary for finishing the game. Also, although the players still need to find collectibles, the addition of radar ended the headache of collectible search problems-one should purchase it from Rupert as early as possible. The discgun still feels like cheating, you are unstoppable with its final form. The enemies can hit each other, I feel that discgun's discs should harm Cally too in a "difficult mode". As a final note, I had a problem regarding one of the achievements. Killing 100 ninja warriors achievement was still locked although I killed more than 350 ninja warriors. After deleting data and starting from scratch, this achievement was unlocked.
Cally 4 does has some nice elements, but they are completely overshadowed by a large number of unsatisfactory ones. The game looks nice, the art style is pleasant and the soundtrack is not horrendous. But those are superficial elements, and if they were enough to make a game - a beautiful mural next to a jukebox would be an excellent game. The default controls in the game are inconvenient at best. The game plot is juvenile. The dialogue is nonsensical half the time. The weapon level up system is poorly thought out (you could simply stand around and get 3-4 levels on a weapon on a single chef). The level design can barely be called design. The boss battles are hardly necessary considering the arsenal the player has once they arrive at them, they are a mere formality. There's is a very weird distribution of items throughout the game, as if there was no thought put into it; “here, lets' just throw one of these here!” Or “Lets put a dozen hearts here even though the players will probably have 4 max hp!” And the Menuing... There is simply no way anyone can defend that menu/inventory. All n all, this game is brilliant; it would easily take an A+ as a school project. But as a product to sell to customers? Cally 4 is half-baked. I would not recommend anyone buy this game. Do I think Cally is a lost cause? Nah, not really. If the developer would sit back and clean up the product and redo the levels, boss fights and rewrite all of the dialogue, it could become an excellent game – but that would require them to see the need to do that, and months of work. So I suppose, my recommendation is still: Do not buy Cally 4. I have not played any other Cally games, so I cannot comment on 4 being better or worse or the same as others.
I racked up nearly a day on it, and it's been released on steam for like two and a half days; what rating did you think I'd give it? >> It's another Cally's Caves game. Anyone who's played them knows the drill; it plays sort of like a mix of Metroid, Megaman X and Castlevania, and while the core gameplay is the same each game, the graphics and mechanics also get better each game. New weapon tiers to unlock, more characters to meet, you can unlock backstory and information about stuff by scanning rooms you've cleared of enemies, new bosses with phases, way more variation in location and background art, new costumes for Cally, possibly different endings depending on some choices (Haven't tested it yet, would require a fresh save), more collectibles to grab, new weapon modding system, and on top of ALL of that? Cally can finally swim. :o Some people might complain that the difficulty is still mostly pretty easy, but when it's this fun is that even a bad thing? The only downside to the game is that now I'm HYPED for Cally's Caves 5 and/or a DLC, so hop to it dev peoples!
Cally's Caves is one of my guilty pleasures. On the surface there's nothing that special about it: the gameplay, graphics, music and story aren't going to win any awards. But that doesn't stop it from being a lot of fun. Very reminiscent of run-and-gun platformers from the golden age. Get weapons, and upgrade them. Collect currency, and buy skills and abilities. Collectables and secrets here and there. This is an improvement from the 3rd game in basically every way. I think my only complaint is that the menu system is still very clunky and a chore to navigate.
I have not played any Cally's Cave game before and I really like the style of this one, it has variety of content( weapons, enemies, consumables, collectibles... and achievements for these lovers.) There are several extra modes like new game + , survival mode( 150 rounds divided in 3 grounds so you can rest between) and a mode called qwerty that I still have no idea what it does (haven't tried it yet.) Good game.
This game series is awesome... Their music is awesome... Making me level all those weapons and find their Final Forms is awesome... I played all of them (Minus 2... That's NOT on Steam!)... Starting with laid back Game 1... LOVED IT. I slept my way through it... Then there was Game 3... Made me work for it a bit... GOOD! This game though... The graphics were different and Cally felt heavier when jumping... THIS GAME HAD LOTS OF UPGRADES! I bought all of them BEFORE I started New Game+... Because I am insane and grind too much... I know. This game took some stuff from other games and FIXED them... Of course not everything. My HP was either too high or inappropriate for the game and it turned BLACK. I went into "Bera Endless Mode" and my character OFFICIALLY became a BEAR! I CAN GO ANYWHERE AS A BEAR! That would be awesome too, but... I can't level my weapons... At all. I was so nuts, that I tried to scan every area... Only to realize that was just to gather bonus information and get freebies... Oops... Well okay, my character got to see Rupert every time she came to the base and she DID need money to buy Scrap from him... How else do you tell someone you like them?! Not me, I said Cally... The enemies in this game ARE ANNOYING. They made me work for it! Game 1 and 3 had Smokers. They were hot. I was OKAY with their constant shooting off screen... But this one... Smokers were gone and... Soccer Players and Ninjas just didn't do it for me. Soccer Players hit you in the face, while Ninjas are just damn flipping jumping all over the place! That's okay though... I equipped every weapon with "ROOT MOD". Now they couldn't get to me... Okay fine... Sometimes they could... Root Mod doesn't work when they force jump I guess... I found everything. Yep, everything. There is a thing that tells you where Bonus Things are... REALLY NEEDED THAT IN 3! My Buzz Blade was the only weapon to be Level 19! I have to pretend they are all level 20... To not drive myself nuts... Oh and the hazards (magma and others) are actually gone in this game! I JUST noticed! Some weapons level really weirdly... I gain 5 bow levels to 1/3 of an Assault Rifle level. O_O? That's enough for now... Bera the bear for the win... She is awesome and adorable... THANK YOU FOR THE AWESOME GAME SERIES AND THAT AWESOME SOUNDTRACK AND THAT BEAR! :D :) =)
An enjoyable conclusion to the series. Similar gameplay with the guns that grow and evolve as you use them, and lots of platforming. But, if you had fun with 2 and 3, you'll have fun with 4.
Cally's Caves 4 is a 2d shoot-em-up game about a girl named Cally saving her friends. This is a direct sequel to Cally's Caves 3*. Beat the full game in 15 hours, 8-10 if you don't back track or collect the dossier, using a game controller. Difficulty is easy. Good game for kids. Gameplay - This feels a step up from 3 and Trials. Instead of pounding the button you can hold it down and the shoot ratio is faster. Moving and jumping is comfortably fluid. There's a variety of enemies. Pew pew pew! Graphics - Nice improvement from Trials, dig the retro layout. Smooth instead of overly pixelly. The art behind the different levels is great. Music - I love the music in the CC games. Plot - Loved the plot in the first half, got bored with it in the second. Reminds me of something a young writer would come up with (which, imho, makes this game great for kids). It feels like the game had this great idea up until jumping the shark halfway through, then the second half started to drag on with the same stuff and ended up feeling like it should have been half as many levels (noticed quite a few of the rooms had no enemies at all). Feel like there should've been more to the story and the colorful characters. And most of the backstory details on everything is in the form of the dossier you scan/collect, which is interesting in the beginning, gets tiring later on, and ultimately feels like a one-off gimmick. Collectibles - Like 3, this game has stuff you can collect. However I wish there was more to this. I get the fragments and the Mayan shards, but feel like there should have been some sort of short story for all those pages. The opportunity was there. The dossier was a nice touch, and made the game longer by giving a reason to tank all the enemies, but I wish there was a way to track what you did and didn't scan, and there was more incentive. Bonus stuff - There is a survival mode and a QWERTY level. The Qwerty level is amazing. No longer blinky - In previous reviews for CC, I mentioned the problem with the blinking and epilepsy. In 4 there is an option to turn off both the blinking and screen shaking, the former of which makes the game so much more playable. Lloyd - He is the best guitarist ever. There should be a Lloyd in every game out there. * As of this review, there is no CC 1 and 2 on steam. There is Cally's Trials, Cally's Caves 3 (which is the same as Trials but with better graphics), and Cally's Caves 4. There is a CC2, but it's Android/IOS only. That said, you can start the series with 3 and likely wont lose anything plot-wise. Do I recommend Cally's Caves 4? Sure, why not. If you like 3 you'll like 4. It's got the same vibe of shooting, low-key plot devices, weapon levelling, and colorful characters, which comes across as unique compared to other 2d romps out there. It's got Bera. But I seriously do wish more was done for the second half of the game. It went from discovering new stuff per level to the same robots and gunners every level and very little to give for the plot outside of some recycled dialogue and a few light quips in the dossier that you can only haphazardly collect by jobbing through all enemies and manually scanning each square in a level. Instead of forcing players to uncover the whole dossier I wish that plot was more readily there in the game play. I also wish there was more to the pages you collect, like a little short story.
