Pros: - Excellent environment and character art. - Great animation. - Interesting, well-executed "corporate grind" theme. - Solid controls. Cons: - Unacceptably buggy for a game at this price point. I fell through the ground and died twice. I had to replay a level because the game randomly didn't save at the end of a level once. - Poor level design. There are looooong stretches where you are just running to the next room in a completely open and empty space with no enemies. - The music is very forgettable. - At 6 levels plus a final boss, the game is quite short. What this game does well, it does very well. Specifically, the art direction in this game is AAA level. The characters, enemies, and environments are all very detailed and well-animated. Visually, this game is a treat to look at. Unfortunately, that's where the compliments end. I feels like the dev team spent most of their time making the game look as pretty as it does. The bugs and poor level design kinda took the wind out of my sails for this game. This game could've been much better if it were a bit more polished. As it is now, I think it's too expensive for what you're getting.
Me encanta como representan cada una de las partes de una oficina, muy graciosamente similares al a realidad Es un reto rápido pero muy disfrutable por su precio Y la canción del final la pondré cada día al ir al trabajo
The game is extremely bland, unpolished, and boring! Like good job to the relatively small team that have probably worked so hard to make this game. I'm not minimizing the effort that goes into making any video games. But. You needed a real game designer, and to care at about 99%, instead of the 85% that you have right now. Your levels are mostly just meaningless obstacles, and repeated enemies. All of the ranged attacks have the same utility, the levels aren't balanced properly, with the only difficulty being 'the few and far in between' check points towards the end, the jokes fall flat and the language use is faulty. This could have been so much more, and I'm so sad to report that it's not.
Short and sweet. Fantastic art and design, good humour throughout, great enemy design. Boss fights are great. Less than 5hrs long. The rich environments are expensive, but also I feel like they could've gotten a lot more value out of the environments with better level design. Especially in the second half of the game, there's a lot of just long corridors with nothing in them. Likewise, it really feels like the story snuffs out... the story asks a lot of bold questions, but then kinda just doesn't answer any of them and then ends. I think this game could have been a lot more, but what it is is an afternoon of fun.
The Company Man had promise, and it's not without it's fun moments. However, the game felt half-baked in the end, making it difficult to recommend. Now I will praise certain aspects of the game. The animations, environments, and character designs are all top-notch. Everything feels fresh, and the sheer amount of attention to detail given to the visual style actually reminds me of Wario Land: Shake It! with the focus on good animation. I also liked the concept of fighting through an office. They found creative ways to incorporate corporate concepts and office items into hazards and weapons. It was Near the end of the game is a glitch-fest. In the marketing level, I fell straight through the stage, forcing me to reset. The final boss was completely buggy, not panning the camera properly in several areas which forced me to basically restart again, made even worse by the fact that the final boss is 2 phases long. This also ties into another issue I have with the game: the janky hitboxes. It's always hard to tell what will and won't hit you, because the sprites are so large. Also, the upgrades. Good luck affording anything, because you can't. It makes the coffee shop feel a little redundant. My final issue with this was the story. While it brought up an interesting idea of corporate greed being larger than one person or even a handful of people, it ultimately went nowhere. Even Jim's backstory feels utterly unfulfilled, as the ending is just a still image. It would be nice to have had some text to accompany this CG, or even just one final cutscene to show how Jim's character has progressed. All in all, if you want to play this I recommend waiting for a sale, as it's just not worth the hefty 20$ price tag, both in terms of the content it offers, and it's performance. While The Company Man undeniably has some great style, flair alone cannot carry this game, as it's bugs and lack of a true ending leave it feeling like a truly mid experience.
It's always complicated and sad to rate negatively a little indie project, which I'm sure, the devs have put lot of heart, time and effort in it, but even if It started very well, with a funny little satire of how big companies work and companies greed, it didn't last long before I noticed all I didn't like with this game. THE GOOD: - The Art Style of the characters (not anime style but close) and the animations - The ennemies are fun - The satire (but) THE BAD: - A bland experience after the first stage - The music!!! OMG! It's a torture for the ears! I've never heard that in my entire life, I don't know who validated that and who thought it would be a good idea to use that awful music for every.single.stage! Only the reception music is good. I wanted to take a break multiple time in that very short game, because the music was so atrocious that I coudln't handle it. - Too gentle, the satire doesn't go very far. It lacks a bit of substance. - The hitbox feels weird - The stages are not really interesting. It's a background pattern that roughly repeat itself throughout the same stage and the first 4 stages look extremely similar, atleast that's the imrpession that gives coz they are so repetitive. - The stages are stretched and stretched and stretched with absolutely no other purpose than give you a false feeling that they are long, because most of the time they are totally empty (even from ennemies, except the 2 final stages) - They didn't even implemented a "duck" mechanic, something you find in 99% of platformers. That could have help creating more diverse situation with the annemies and obstacles. - As a platformer you can't do more generic and bland than that (millions of generic platformer like that) - The level design is quite bad (pattern background, cheap platform mechanics, a few obstacles repeated on every single stage ad nauseam etc. - The placement of ennemies is so weird sometimes and even if well design, it always feel liek they were placed on the stages totally razndomly without even thinking about where they should make the most sense and the amount and variety that woudl be appropriate - Relatively easy (which is fin for me as I prefer easy game, but most people would not like that that's why I put it in the negatives) - Not possible to chose a difficulty - No reasons to even fight the ennemies when the game doesn't force us to do it byt artifcially locking the stage with a door that opens only once we defeat an ennemy we've been fighting 14564 before i nthe same stage. Fighting them brings nothing besides health or a coin or 2. So I skipped most of them once I disocvered the new enemies design of each stages. - No secrets, nothing to discover, nothing to collect. - Less than 3 hours to finish it. And I've seen playthrough where the game can easily be beaten in 2 hours... - No resolution beyond 1080p / no graphical options - Heavy aliasing on the characters when playing 1080p on my 4K monitor (don't know if it's also here on 1080p monitors) If you can grab it for maximum $1/1€ maybe $2 at best on sales (I bought it for that price), maybe give it a try, but it's certainly not worth more than that, and certainly not the asking price of $15$ or $10 on sales... This is delusional. The game is only saved by the funny side of the satire (not funny haha, more funny blowing through the nose and "oh good idea". The most funny part is actually the "certfications" you receive once you fire employees, not even actual gameplay) and the character designs.
i liked the game there are some minor bugs with controller mapping resetting sometimes as well as animation glitches when you move to an elevator and jump at the same frame or something but the game was pretty fun its nice and short, nothing too serious and even having a little bit of truth about workplace life in it i like platformers and it was pretty nice, although i was desperate for some coffee near the end of the game because its really really rarely placed and the wolf enemies are bad enemies to get your health up because they appear at the worst times when the stupid golden spikebricks hit some of the timings dont seem to match well probably because they arent loaded in the proper order or something but it is nothing more than a minor annoyance i wish there were health bars for enemies or knowing how many hits they take beforehand, cause i only seem to know that the mail attacks do different amounts of damage but how much the slashes do is kinda left open-ended still, id recommend this game to someone who likes platformers and wants a funny perspective on workplace life
