First playthrough review time. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is one of the best classic games in the Call of Duty series. Earlier Modern Warfare games were known for strong impact and high popularity, and this one continues in the same direction without changing the formula much. It still comes as a polished entry with a lot of content. I first played it on Nintendo Wii more than 12 years ago after importing the original disc from the USA, so it also connects with old personal memory. The campaign continues after the previous game and begins right after it. It moves through different action-heavy missions with varied situations like large battles, close combat sections, and action scenes that are heavily scripted. The story has a few twists and stays serious most of the time. The level design is mostly linear, but it keeps the pacing steady without long breaks. Multiplayer is a major part of the game. The maps include small close-range maps and larger ones that suit different play styles. The shooting system is similar to earlier entries and does not change much, but it is stable and responsive. I am not much into COD multiplayer because I bought these games mainly for the campaign, but it is still well built and has a lot of content. Co-op modes like Spec Ops and Survival also add extra content, with Survival focusing on wave-based combat and resource management. I am mentioning this in most of COD reviews, even if there are nice COD games with great campaigns or very good campaigns, the campaign is still short compared to the price being paid even on sale for most CODs, and even now the game or its key is often priced higher than expected for its length, with retail key pricing also being same or more. I also thought about playing Call of Duty: Black Ops before this game, but as of that time it was not on sale, so I played this first since it is a direct continuation of the Modern Warfare series. In conclusion, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a solid entry with a large amount of content across campaign, multiplayer, and co-op. It does not introduce major changes, but it keeps consistent gameplay quality throughout.
Modern Warfare 3 gets a lot of flack in the series as the previous 2 games were masterpieces for their time. Modern Warfare 2007 came out as a revolutionary new game that was loved by millions. Modern Warfare 2 2009 perfected that formula and is famous for the introduction of game chat in that era and the gameplay itself was phenomenal. It is very hard for a 3rd game in a series to continue that same enthusiasm. Modern Warfare 3 2011 had some issues back in that time period that led to devs being let go at Infinity Ward and they needed to get Sledgehammer games as well as Raven Studios to help with Multiplayer and Survival modes. There were a lot of assets that feel carried over or slightly refreshed from Modern Warfare 2 2009 due to the lack of staff. I am reviewing the game in this light and want to review this game on it's own merit. Modern Wafare 3 2011 picks up where Modern Warfare 2 2009 left off in the campaign with the objective being to takedown of the terrorist Makarov and a full scale WW3 that was trying to be stopped in Modern Warfare 2 2009. The campaign is pretty typical for a Call of Duty game and the storyline itself is favorited by many in the franchise as the best series for a campaign. The missions are pretty interesting and offer a lot of various mechanics. I would rate the campaign as a 7/10 just because it didn't feel like I was fighting a whole world war most of the time. The Spec Ops mode from Modern Warfare 2 2009 was scrapped here for a new mode that tried to complete with the popularity of Treyarch's Zombies. This mode is Survival. It's not as bad as some people make it out to be and in some cases it's more engaging. You need to buy weapons, ammo, and armor from a supply point and waves of enemies are spawned on the map increasing in difficulty each round. These enemies are armed and in some cases loaded with armor like juggernaut suits and all and are trying to kill you. The concept is very similar to zombies but different in how they attack you and it's played on the multiplayer maps not new maps created for this mode. This mode is good in it's own way and never made it to Infinity Ward's next game Call of Duty Ghosts. This could be because Sledgehammer had more involvement with making this mode or perhaps they still felt they didn't match the vibe and hype of zombies. While Zombies in World at War was a hit right off the bat nothing usually sticks like that right away and needs to be refined, it would have been nice to see Infinity Ward stick with this mode instead of trying to copy Treyarch. Overall the mode is fun to play I'd say 8/10. Multiplayer is great. For a Call of Duty game the selection of guns, attachments and camos are very diverse. The multiplayer experience is very unforgiving as when you prestige you lose everything you have done including weapon levels and camos, which is very different than how the next Call of Duty Black Ops II handled it. In some ways I hated this but in others it gave me a reason to go back and use those weapons again because I needed the challenge bonus XP to get to the next prestige faster. This was at the time the longest Call of Duty multiplayer leveling system. The game launched with 10 prestiges with each needing to reach level 80 and later added 10 more prestiges to 20 total. The final 10 prestiges that were added later on sucked. Like 0 effort it's the same emblem with a different roman numeral. Nothing cool looking like the previous 10. There was literally no reason to add these extra prestiges, the game increased the max level from 70 in Modern Warfare 2 to 80 which was an extra 1.2 million xp, and you only get 100 XP per standard kill in team deathmatch. The leveling system was so ramped up Black Ops II even pulled back the XP needed to reach it's max level 55 to be less than reaching level 50 in Black Ops 1. This really made people not want to prestige at all knowing how hard it was to even reach level 80 in the first place knowing they would lose everything. The last 10 prestige icons are just a kick in the teeth to those grinding. Anyways enough about levels... The maps themselves in multiplayer are good they created their own staples in the genre like seatown, resistance, arkaden, and dome. The game also created a new mode that is called Infected, this was an instant hit for Infinity Ward and made it's way to Call of Duty Ghosts. One person starts infected and has to kill someone to make them infected to, once 2 are infected they just get a knife, a throwing knife and a tactical insertion (respawn point) and have to kill everyone else till everyone is infected or time runs out. It's sort of like hide and seek, it's really fun and I enjoyed this mode a lot. Another new game mode in Modern Warfare 3 was Kill Confirmed another hit in the series. You not only have to kill the person but you need to collect their dog tag where they died to confirm the kill or else it doesn't count to the score and you can deny kills by picking up your dead teammates tags. Infinity Ward has done some great things in the Call of Duty franchise but for some reason still chase Treyarch's Zombies mode as if they were failing for some reason. Multiplayer also fixed a lot of broken things from Modern Warfare 2009 like One Man Army that let you basically have unlimited ammo to just refresh your class over and over. They also removed the insane knife lunges with the Commando perk. This game also introduced support streaks for those that couldn't get long kill streaks you could slowly get these less powerful streaks which gave newer or worse players a chance to also have more impact on a match. Multiplayer is not very good to play natively on Steam these days. There are literal viruses that can be installed to your computer from within a match and I wouldn't recommend trying to play online for these reasons. This game however is still popular with many players on a private server known as Plutonium. I have a guide on my profile if you want to track your steam hours while playing this private server as well. The game could always use more players on private servers but there are usually many servers with active players (at least 20 or more). I would rate the multiplayer a 7/10 overall.
Nice game 'n interesting fact is... enthusiasts of this game found secret ending ('where captain Price dies while seeing mysterious man in the shadow') after so many years, its insane !!!
