Asylum seeker lore, Angela Merkel loves this game. Honestly, the story isn't too bad but the pacing is really slow for my liking. Also, the lack of manual saves is not particularly great, That means you will have to replay the game multiple times, worst of all, you can't even skip the dialogue. Positive review for the story itself and low price, just bear in mind you'll have a terrible time exploring every possible route.
Bury Me, My Love feels like the sort of game that would click with me, but there was something about the gamification of refuges that just didn't sit right for me in the end. Initially I loved how humanising it was to be texting in a "real" human relationship, but as soon as I realised my responses changed the outcome, it started to feel far too gamey. It was even worse when finishing the game with a 'bad ending' I was suggested to restart and try to get Nour to safety. Bury Me, My Love attempts to bring the real life struggles of refuges into your home, but in the end, makes them feel like NPC escort missions with 1-UPs.
As much as I'd like to see more games tell important stories like this that need to be shared, this one could have been done a lot better. The trailer is very misleading, there is no "gameplay", it's literally just text messaging between Nour and Majd, 95% of the dialogue is scripted and there's only occasional bifurcations thrown in. The story itself is pretty lacklustre, read an actual book by a refugee and you'll get a much better account of what a perilous journey really feels like, this doesn't even scrape the surface. Sorry but this is a no from me, I'm going to go read another book, or maybe I'll dig up the real story about Dana and read that instead.
Got this game along with a bundle so I won't complain much. I think appreciate the game for being bold and rely only on text messages to tell its story with apparently many alternative endings (although I only played through one). On the downside though, this game really feels too long after a while and the basically non-existent gameplay doesn't help either. CONCLUSION: I like what it tries to do, but it really isn't engaging enough to support me through the whole game. ★½ out of 5
Super recomendado!
I appreciate what they were going for here but 1) it doesn't play much like a game, even for an indie choice-based title, and a lack of fast-forward (at least for scenarios you've already done before) makes it a chore to try different endings. 2) it's too sanitized as a lot of people pointed out. Don't get me wrong, the game does have many 'bad' scenarios for Nour to get into, but there's a severe lack of rawness to her misery in terms of presentation that takes away from the cruelty that refugees have to go through. Either making the game more realistic, or making it more interactive, could've improved things for me. But as it stands, I don't regret buying or playing it - but I don't see enough value in it to recommend it. I wish Steam reviews had a neutral/maybe option because 'not recommended' is a bit harsh, but I did want to leave a review.
I hoped for a strong storyline with truly heartbreaking and terrifying moments, something that would spark real thoughts. Unfortunately, I didn’t get that. As for the gameplay – there basically isn’t any. As a player, you have almost no interactivity, aside from making a few choices in chat. About 95% of the game is just reading text messages from your wife, where she describes her rather casual journey to Europe, with some minor struggles like trying to find a smuggler.
