Pitstop in Purgatory is a visual novel meshed with a point-and-click adventure. Well written with interesting characters that all have their own stories to tell.
The Story & Gameplay
In Pitstop in Purgatory you play as Astrid, who recently deceased, finds herself in Purgatory trying to figure out what happened to land her there and how she can move on. The story has a bevy of colorful characters to meet all starting with the guide. The first person you meet when you wake up in Purgatory. While interacting with the host of characters you meet along the way you will learn about them and their backstories. It is also important to note that outside of your route choice the story is mainly linear. You will be prompted at the end of Act 2 to pick who’s route you want to explore, Locke, Rahel or go solo. At the end of these three acts you will unlock the Guide’s route and the Epilogue on the main menu.
Settings & Features
Settings & extras include; audio controls, display options, text options (speed & rollback) and skip options. There is a gallery and extra routes you can unlock as you play and/or finish the main story as well as plenty of save slots. The hud can also be hidden for screen captures.
The Visuals & Audio
The art will not be for everyone, it is more painterly with a darker palette but I did find some of the cg’s to be enjoyable. I appreciate hand-crafted art (especially in modern times), where everything is AI. The story is partially voiced and can be turned off or on in the settings if you wish. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3522185908
Overall Experience
This novel is very well written, and despite the atmosphere being a bit darker in nature there is an ample amount of humour in it. When you first arrive in purgatory you're given a pamphlet by the Guide with “Dang! You’re Dead!” as the name of it :) A well written story that does not shy away from the emotional parts of being human. I also think the point-and-click elements work really well and give the novel a refreshing twist. 🖤 To start the free DLC (included in base game) just hit start and it gives you the option to play the base game or the DLC. Another very nice game that needs more reviews. I thought this was a fun and interesting visual novel. Instead of just choices leading to different endings, the pivotal choices lead you to more information on the main story. There are four paths in this main story with replays starting at the branching choice so you don’t have to replay the beginning of the game over and over. After the four paths, there is an epilogue and an extra DLC story that takes you further along and sets up the sequel game that is currently in development. Besides the visual novel aspect, there is some inventory item usage and riddles to solve which breaks up the clicking through the dialogue. I don’t want to spoil anything with the story, but I enjoyed the take on purgatory, God, and the afterlife that the developers created and will be looking forward to the next installment of this game. The quality and length of game is well worth the price. I recommend this game to anyone who likes a good visual novel. It was an entertaining and fun time!
ENG: Just finished one of the endings and although there is still a lot to see, I can already speak wonderfully of this VN, the plot is intriguing, with some interactive parts and visually very attractive, even its UI looks great. Length is also correct, a very solid purchase, I recommend it.
Note: This VN focuses on sensitive topics like death and such, so do be forewarned. Pitstop in Purgatory is a point-and-click visual novel developed and published by Tymedust Games. You take on the role of Astrid, a young up-and-coming actress who has recently died. She wakes up to find herself in Purgatory and is greeted by a being known as The Guide. However, Astrid doesn't remember the circumstances leading to her death. Nevertheless, The Guide tells her that she must make peace with her death if she is to move on to the afterlife. During Astrid's journey, she meets a few characters who are also stuck in Purgatory, such as Rahel, who likes to help others, and Locke, who's morose and would rather spend his days drinking. That's the basic gist of the story. As for the gameplay, Pitstop in Purgatory is a combination of visual novel and point-and-click elements. Throughout the story, there are choices presented where Astrid can learn more about various characters and possibly befriend them. Also, there are point-and-click elements in which Astrid can pick up items or receive items from other characters. The items can be used to interact with others. Initially, once you get to a certain point in the story, you have three routes that you can pursue. Then, once you complete all those routes,
The Guide
route will be unlocked. In addition, Steam achievements are present although they won't count towards a user's global total until the game is out of "Steam is learning about this game". Now that I've gone over the story and gameplay, I'll move onto my critique. Pitstop in Purgatory caught my interest immediately based on the story premise. You play as a character who finds herself dead and has to make peace with it. Of course, I expected to go into this story, knowing that it might be dark or depressing at times, and there are such themes. Anyway, I'll first touch upon the story. I liked how, after a brief scene in the operating room, Astrid finds herself in Purgatory and is greeted by The Guide. I found it funny how, at first, because Astrid is an actress, she thinks the whole situation is part of a movie act. However, The Guide quickly corrects her. It's fun to follow Astrid as she tries to figure out what's going on and to solve the mystery behind her death. As for the cast of characters, I liked the variety. Each character has more behind them than upon initial appearance. Although there are quite a few characters, two romanceable ones are Rahel, a young woman who is friendly and wants to help Astrid (thus, there's a yuri route), and Locke, a young man who likes to drink and sleep away his time. Upon pursuing both routes, I got to learn more about them and how they died. Of course, there's a solo route as well in which Astrid can choose not to partner up with anyone. In that route, Astrid can learn (pretty much) the full details behind how she died (and it involves another love interest). However, my personal favorite route is The Guide one, which is only unlocked after completing the other routes. I loved getting to know The Guide more, and the interactions between Astrid and him are lively and humorous. There's more to The Guide than simply helping those stuck in Purgatory move on, and I got to learn his endgame. Then there's how that route ends (which is a major cliffhanger), followed by the epilogue. All in all, I'd say that I just absolutely loved the story. It's really worth pursuing all the routes. Also, the characters come to life (despite them being dead lol) and have various personalities. In regards to the writing, I found it well paced and never felt like it dragged or anything. There are a total of three acts, the first two being the common route and the final act being the route you choose to pursue. I didn't notice any typos or grammatical errors, either. The gameplay felt smooth, and I had no issues with the point-and-click elements. Also, I was able to obtain all of the achievements although a couple of them were a bit elusive. As for the art, I liked the style used. It's definitely a departure from the usual styles, and I liked how the design and colors felt more like watercolor paintings. The sprites are animated, mainly in that the eyes blink, which is a nice touch. The CGs are very well done, too. Regarding the music, the tracks are great and fun to listen to. Despite the story occurring in a dark place, there's a variety in the tracks. The tracks range from a 1920's feelings (at least, that's the feeling I got) to a mellow, jazzy beat. I enjoyed listening to the tracks as I played through the game. Overall, would I recommend Pitstop in Purgatory? If you enjoy visual novels and are in the mood for a bit of a dark (but not too dark, in my opinion) story with some witty humor and romance (at times), this is worth taking a look. On one playthrough, I finished it in about 1 hour and 40 minutes, but it's really worth pursuing all the routes. I suppose I'm biased in saying that I really enjoyed The Guide's route and it was worth playing through the other routes to get to it. For the asking price, I'd say it's worth buying. Finally, I wish to give a huge thanks to the developer for the curator copy (and for the help in getting that one achievement that kept eluding me). ^^
Flying free and writing reviews solely for The Introverted Gamer.
This is a nice little VN! I was initially drawn it by the pretty painterly art and the premise (playing as a dead woman who wakes up in purgatory with amnesia seems like my idea of fun) and to be frank I feel like there are two different games here. The first two routes have you play through a classic otome-style narrative mixed with (at times frankly annoying) point-and-click elements. I found the romances to be OK but they happen very, very fast and although I enjoyed the characters I think friendship routes might have been more believable (shoutout to the inclusion of a f/f option though). At that point in the game the writing is skin-deep because all the interesting pieces of the plot are kept away from the reader. There are some cool one liners but that's it. With this out of the way, the third and fourth routes can be started and the world-building actually becomes interesting. There's a healthy dose of mystery, better characterization and a more compelling romance (as well as hints of another one that could potentially happen in the future). The pacing becomes way more enjoyable and less rushed as the writers set things up for a sequel and give the story and characters time to breathe. I really enjoyed the latter part of Pitstop in Purgatory, including the epilogue and DLC which in the end feel more like the game's meat and bone than the first two acts do. You get plot-twists, intrigue, and some nice heartfelt moments. The art really is a highlight of the game but I'm just glad there is more to it than that and that I stuck through the rougher moments. In any case, I recommend this to people who enjoy VNs and also the side game(s) that are available on Steam and itch.io. I have only played Guidelicious so far but I intend to play the rest and will definitely keep an eye out for the sequel.
This is such a stylish little VN! The UI is some of the prettiest I've seen in a VN, and it's incredibly intricate. The animated candles in the textbox are a nice touch, and all the screens look very slick. The art, meanwhile, is fairly unusual. It's a significant departure from the big-eyed moemoe style a lot of VNs (even English VNs) favour, but I think this more muted painterly style works well for the setting and the tone of this story. I'm an awful weeb, so I prefer the more 'generic' anime style when it comes to VN art, but the style used here is very charming, and it has a lot of character. I think Rahel, in particular, looks very cute! I'm calling this a VN in the review, but it's actually more of a point and click game. There's a decent amount of dialogue, but you have to complete various oddjobs and solve some (thankfully simple) puzzles to get to the next dialogue chunk. I'm not a big fan of point and click gameplay (or any sort of gameplay, really) but I think there's a good blend between the gameplay and the story: it never felt like one overwhelmed the other. Also, as mentioned before, the puzzles are pretty easy, and the game does a good job of telegraphing what you should do next. I did get 'stuck' on a couple of occasions, though, because I'd forgotten to examine a specific object at a specific time, which left me wandering through the game not knowing what to do until I chanced upon the solution. This is definitely more of a 'me' problem than a problem with this game, though: it's pretty intuitive for the most part. I'm not a big fan of gameplay in my VNs myself, so I don't think the point and click elements added anything to my experience (in actual fact, I think I would have liked the story more without them lol), but I know a lot of people don't like plain VNs and they find reading large text blocks uninteresting. To these people, I say you have bad taste, but if you like a bit more to your VNs than just 'read text and look at pretty art', you'd probably enjoy this. The interactive elements are intergrated well with the story, and they do make it feel like your main character has a little more agency than your typical VN heroine. Also, this VN has a yuri route, which is a big plus. Rahel is very cute; her design is adorable, and I especially love her voice acting (her surprised 'oh-ho!' is very precious........) I might go back for the other ending with Locke (I haven't completed all the endings at the time of writing this review), but Rahel is adorable, so I don't know if I can bring myself to... I don't want to cheat on her... Which is a testament to how likeable the characters are in this! The devs did a really fantastic job all around; I'm stunned that this was made in a month for a game jam. It's incredibly impressive. The devs deserve some serious kudos for managing something so ambitious, which never once fumbles. If you have a bit of spare time, please consider checking this out. It feels like a real labour of love; I liked it a lot!
I want to state that this is more of a neutral-positive review. I bought this game cuz it was cheap and it did say romance, but the romance element is very small, so small I wouldn't really consider it one of the main tags. Astrid was an aspiring actress and suddenly she awakens in a strange place with only a few inhabitants, some of which she can't even see the face of. Through the game, team up with one companion to uncover the mystery of Astrid's life and death and pass through purgatory. I did enjoy this game. It was pretty short and it's partially voiced. The quality of voice acting is consistent and it's really great. Some of the voice acting was pretty touching. I really liked the character art / art style and the CGs, but in some parts the CGs did look unfinished with the chaotic art style. There are key parts in the dialogue where you use items, which did boost interaction but I found it overall just a slightly more interactive VN. Honestly this game is just really tragic and you feel for Astrid. It's nice having a game where the MC isn't perfect. It's worth playing but it wasn't what I was looking for at the time.
