Simpler Times, developed by stoneskip. and published by iam8bit Presents, is a reflective, narrative-focused experience that leans into quiet introspection rather than traditional gameplay. It is not a game built around challenge or progression in the usual sense, but instead one that invites players to slow down and sit with a series of small, personal moments. Framed around a young woman preparing to leave home and step into a new chapter of her life, it explores the emotional weight of transition—how the past lingers in ordinary objects, and how memories are often tied to the simplest spaces we inhabit. The entire experience unfolds within a single bedroom, revisited across different points in time. Each version of the room reflects a stage in the protagonist’s life, subtly changing through seasons, decorations, and the presence or absence of certain items. Rather than presenting a linear narrative, the game allows players to piece together fragments of the story by interacting with objects scattered throughout the space. A sketchbook, a camera, a stack of letters—each item acts as a doorway into a memory or thought, gradually building a portrait of the character without ever relying on exposition-heavy storytelling. This environmental approach gives the experience a natural, almost organic flow, where discovery feels personal rather than directed. Interaction is intentionally minimal, focusing on small, tactile actions that mirror everyday routines. Players might assemble objects, organize belongings, or engage in simple creative activities, each of which triggers dialogue or reflection. These moments are less about completing tasks and more about creating a rhythm, a quiet loop of interaction and contemplation that encourages immersion. There are no time pressures or fail states, allowing the player to move at their own pace and absorb the atmosphere without distraction. This design choice reinforces the game’s core identity as something closer to an interactive meditation than a conventional game. What truly elevates Simpler Times is its atmosphere. The visual style is soft and painterly, with warm lighting and gentle color palettes that shift subtly between different time periods. The room itself becomes a kind of emotional landscape, its changes reflecting the protagonist’s growth and shifting perspective. Complementing this is a carefully curated lo-fi soundtrack that plays a central role in shaping the experience. The music is not just background noise but an integral part of the storytelling, with each track reinforcing the mood of a particular moment. Together, these elements create a sense of calm that permeates the entire game, making it feel intimate and reflective. The narrative itself is understated, delivered through fragments rather than a clear, linear progression. Conversations and thoughts emerge as players interact with the environment, often out of sequence, which can make the story feel slightly disjointed at times. However, this structure mirrors the nature of memory itself—nonlinear, selective, and often shaped by what we choose to focus on. When the pieces come together, the result is a quietly emotional story about growth, uncertainty, and the process of letting go. It avoids dramatic peaks in favor of subtle resonance, relying on tone and accumulation rather than overt storytelling. The game’s brevity is both one of its strengths and its limitations. A full playthrough can be completed in a relatively short time, making it easy to experience in a single sitting. This concise structure ensures that the game remains focused and does not overextend its concept, but it also means that there is little room for expansion. Once the story has been experienced, there is limited incentive to return, as most of its impact comes from the initial journey rather than replayability. There are also minor technical and design issues that occasionally interrupt the otherwise smooth experience. Interactions can sometimes feel slightly imprecise, particularly when selecting specific objects, which can momentarily break immersion. These issues are not severe, but they stand out more in a game where the overall design is so minimal and focused. Ultimately, Simpler Times is a game that succeeds by committing fully to its vision. It offers a contemplative, emotionally grounded experience that prioritizes atmosphere and personal reflection over mechanics or spectacle. It is not designed to appeal to everyone, particularly those looking for action or complexity, but for players willing to engage with its quiet, introspective approach, it provides a memorable and thoughtfully crafted journey. It captures the feeling of standing at the edge of change, looking back at the small moments that shaped you, and finding meaning in their simplicity. Rating: 8/10
Controls: Easy Gameplay: Easy (Good) Replayability: One time Rewards/Progression: Very Satisfying Story: Slightly interesting Visual Style: Very appealing Completionist friendly: Yes The puzzles were engaging, the music was really good. I don't have any cons for this game. It's a very short game though, two hours for 100% completion so I would get it on sale if possible.
Cute little game but very very short.
It is a beautiful and cozy narrative game. I love how the story is divided into four seasons. The view outside the window changes with each season, and every scene feels special. Autumn is my favorite season, so I spent extra time enjoying the warm colors before continuing the story. 🍂 The game follows a girl named Tiana as she prepares to leave for college and reflects on memories of her family, friends, and the moments that shaped her. I enjoyed the simple puzzles and relaxing activities, such as birdwatching, painting, and building a birdhouse. They made exploring the world feel calm and enjoyable. My favorite part of the game is the record player. I also enjoy listening to vinyl records in real life, so collect and play records made the experience feel even more personal and special to me. Highly recommend this game for anyone who loves cozy storytelling, relaxing gameplay, and beautiful seasonal scenery!
Very relaxing, but also very short.
just a sweet little story telling. some of the books sound so interesting that i wish they were real! the controls are a little wonky but you get used to it eventually.
The story was cute but being unable to tab out at all during the game even after switching it to windowed mode and with how slow you can turn and move made it almost unbearable. I love the minigames and the story however.
It is what it says. A peaceful cozy game with absolutely no stress. Took my time, explored everything, took a little over 3 hours to get 100% achievements with minimal effort. Would probably take a bit longer than that to solve the rubiks cube. I enjoyed the lofi music and getting to know the main character. I felt a little sad the game was over so soon. Wish they had added more levels. If you're a cozy game enjoyer, you'll enjoy this one.
beautiful and relatable little game, with pretty cool puzzles and beautiful music that really adds to the atmosphere. perfect for a cozy night :) bonus points from the true-to-life, 12th grade flashback inducing math test
