It's not a definitive and complete 'no' for me but I was a bit disappointed by my experience of the game. The game is obviously designed to have you play multiple times before you succeed but luckily (or unluckily can't decide) I've accomplished the main objective during my first 2h playthrough. At this point, considering the pace of the game, it was an absolute "no way" for me to revisit the same 3 maps (and a half) to unlock the few spots I hadn't found and try a few different "monologue branches". So I was there, at the end of a very unclear conclusion cinematic, with quite a good idea of what was the story about or could have been about but absolutely no idea if there was more to it. No idea, and no courage to push further sadly. Also on the downside : - this kind of narrative game definitely requires voice acting these days. It's standard now and when you don't have some, it shows. - the level design of the three main maps is meeeeeeh. Who got the idea, it would be cool to have 3 or 4 consecutive jumps with ramps on one of them to access capsules ? The game suddenly becomes a very cheap and frustrating arcade game for no other obvious purpose than to become frustrating.

Two main reasons to play this game (on lesser and bigger scale) are anomalies and replayability. Anomalies' gravitational effect is designed so amazingly, getting caught into one is both always unpleasant and very different based on their type. The orange ones gave me the most intense experiences: while I wiggled and tossed here and there (whimpering into my screen), trying to slide at least a little bit out of its gravitational field; while my maximum acceleration did not give me any significant motion; while the anomaly pulled me closer once in a while with its rough, unstoppable power, – that's when I had THE best experience of helplessness in games EVER. I try really hard to avoid the orange ones, I'm not afraid to zip at high speed near the green ones, but the blue ones? I'm freaking terrified of them! I've never encountered a single one, because I'm damn scared to get even close, so evil they look! Replayability here is its own thing, seriously. Wherever you see a well-designed replayability you get something from dying/failing and trying again. But here you get a whole LOT of stuff inside your head: you memorize parts of the diary, reading them in a new way after some time; you start to understand the mechanics and laws of the game better; you memorize the areas a bit, so you get better at navigation. After some time you remember where you've seen lots of Gamma-minerals, and where you found the easier shortcut for a very risky way
(see the ritual mountain on the Guild beach)
. This is also a pretty meditative game: the dynamics of the drone's movement always put me in a trance of sorts. The energy system adds to that. Magically, the game where a man has to act fast in the face of death, is about taking your time, and giving everything around a thought, and dying painfully and slowly to try just one more time despite the sun slowly rising outside your window.
On ubuntu linux, I had some mouse issues, but an update fixed that, but I am still getting my PC freezing after a few minutes of drone navigation. I hold out hope that I get to play it, but there is not any forum support. (Update 05/2019: I had the opportunity to try the game under Steam Play, and I can say that the gameplay was not enjoyable. The game plays with just the mouse and the left-click, which accellerates you across three different maps. The map objects are interesting, but the level design is frustrating. Additionally, there are "anomolies" which are just IRL screen glitches, which are terribly annoying. The level objectives are camped-out by these things, which makes getting the objectives a chore. No mini-map, just explore the level, and try not to bump into these things that cause glitches. The game narrative is decent enough, there is a bit of a puzzle for fuel rations, but the level design gameplay kills the deal. I made it most of the way through the game, which I found to be very, very short, without replay value. Cannot recommend in any situation.)
I thought it is impossible to make a bad implementation of walking in a walking simulator. It's not. I would really love to dive into the story, but with developers expecting players to make precise movements with no strafing and moving backwards it is just iritating. My guess is that it was meant for VR, thus movement simplification was applied.
In Breached you crash land and awake from suspended animation on an alien planet but the difference is you are confined to the chair in your tiny space capsule with 8 days to repair and create fuel in order to leave. The main portion of the game sees you use a remote drone to survey the landscape find modules to hack in order to repair your craft and minerals to find in order to synthesise fuel. This is made slightly more difficult by the terrain of the planet that often requires some jumping at speed over caverns Dukes of Hazzard style and magnetic anomalies that destroy your probe and ruin your attempts. Each day you can choose between piloting a drone, hacking a retrieved capsule in order to repair your craft and try and synthesise fuel in what can only be described as the most overly complicated yet simple mini game ever created. And that’s about it… Each day is met by story sections and the feeling of isolation on your little craft as you start to waste away is rather atmospheric but even after a few playthroughs I was left desperate for more to do. Visually the game is stunning to look at and the landscapes are fairly well realised providing you do not get too up close and see some rather dodgy textures, This is indeed post processing turned up to 11 but it works… very well in fact. The visuals do a good job of telling the game’s simple story which is told through written logs but even that still left me with a “oh that was everything” feeling as I was awaiting to unlock new zones. The game boils down to a scavenger hunt with a bit of stealth thrown in coupled with an overly confusing mini game mechanic. Starting a second play through I hoped the environment would have changed but sadly no this is not procedurally generated but a set location which makes finding everything a doddle once you know where they are. This leaves the science mini game…. Ohhhh the science mini game. Now the developer has stated that it does indeed have a way of working it out but I will be damned if I know how it works. You pick amounts of 3 types of minerals and that gives you a percentage purity of fuel. Then you change the amount to try and make it better but god knows how you are supposed to work that out. If it is a hot or cold affair a way of finding out the mix you used previously would have been lovely. Visually the game is great and I kind enjoyed playing it but it really just feels like a mini section in a much larger game. Comparing this to Solus Project my previously played “crash on an alien planet” game it just feels empty. A great idea that needs a lot more to make it shine.
3.1/10 - Motion sickness simulator
While Breached is a very pretty game, it suffers from several major flaws that make it unappealing to play. You wake up from cryosleep to answer an irrelevant flavour text questionnaire, and discover that your oxygenator and fuel synthesizer are broken, leaving you 8 days to fix them before you die. The former requires you to find the necessary parts and resources for repairs. The latter requires you to collect minerals and figure out the correct ratios to synthesize fuel. The gathering is the meat of the game, and will have you piloting a rover/craft/thingy around three wastelands (plus a small tutorial map) on the surface of a planet
(post-apocalyptic Earth, obviously), using your nervous system, which is somehow fused to the craft from a distance
. Besides resource hunting and trial-and-erring your way to a fuel recipe, Breached features a journal system to convey lore. At the start of each day, you trigger a journal entry, which frequently includes a hashtag that allows you to search for additional entries that share the tag. Those entries can also include another tag, leading to a whole web of entries, which the game then sorts by date. Some people may enjoy this kind of exposition puzzle -- I do not! Rather, I find it confusing and tedious -- if you have some good background lore, then feed it to me at the ideal pace rather than forcing me to try and make sense of it all, because I won't, I'll just give up on the story element. As mentioned above, you have to fix the oxygenator and discover the recipe for fuel within eight days, and you can only do so much during a day. After beating the game once, you unlock a "story mode" that does not have this time constraint, but since there isn't really much of any replayability, I'm not sure what its point was. Visiting the surface to gather resources costs 40 fatigue points, analyzing parts for the oxygenator costs 30, attempting to synthesize fuel from minerals costs 10. However, not every day will give you the same amount of fatigue points to start with (I found there could be anywhere between 60 and 100), which undermines the management aspect of the game. If you collide with an enemy
(an electromagnetic anomaly)
, your trip to the surface is cut short and you lose all the resources gathered that trip
(you suffer a severe shock which severs your nervous system's bond with the surface craft)
. If this happens, don't even think about saving the wasted fatigue points via alt+f4 -- the devs ensured the game saves immediately when you do that. The control scheme is very minimalistic (accelerate, decelerate, rotate), which is defeated by input delay and responsiveness. Because of your enormous inertia, it is very difficult not to overshoot your target and go careening off of cliffs or into enemies. On its own, this challenge could be seen as a feature; however the sensitivity to your commands also varies constantly, coinciding with stuttering and frame drops. The result is a constant struggle to balance overcorrection and undercorrection, all the while becoming increasingly nauseated by the ever changing frame rate and blurring (with motion blur turned off). Once in a while, you will not be able to accelerate at all, and will need to stand still for a minute, change some resolution settings, or sometimes even relaunch the game. There also exists a very real chance that you will randomly fall through the map, crashing your game, or -- if you're lucky -- your Steam client. Finally, don't even bother about the achievements, because they are bugged and don't drop.
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4765T RAM: 16G SSD: KINGSTON SUV300S37A120G Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 4G (nvidia-current) OS: MagOS Linux 2016.64
Достаточно уныло, вообще говоря. С хорошей скидкой можно взять, без оной не рекомендую.
It's a nice little game. Imagine that you are some kind of Robinson Crusoe in the future, and you have to survive by gathering resources and experimenting. The only shortcoming Breached has is that it is very short, it feels like it is a tech demo for a bigger game. So I wouldn't advice buying it for full price, wait when it is on sale. Then you certainly won't regret it.
