I don't necessarily think this is a horrible game, I just don't gel with it well. The writing is very overwhelming with a ton of characters and a ton of strange unnecessary stuff. It just feels sometimes like a stream of consciousness without much limiting the weird factor or referential humor. I think the rolling is cool and for people who want a goofy character focused heist game I think it'll be nice, but I just don't vibe with it well.
A great game with a terribly abrupt and frustrating cliff hanger ending. Just wait for the sequel guys!... six years later and still no sequel.
criminals go brrr
One thing that immediately stands out is the use of a D20 system, which accounts for character/item/status attributes as well as a dice roll to account for whether a choice is a failure or success. While this can be turned off, I find that this style of game is fits ‘Breach’ very well as it’s one of the more gamified novels I’ve read. This means that as long as you have the equipment to make something happen, there’s a chance that it can. Micro-managing stats becomes a lot less stressful in this game because you are rarely locked out of a certain pathway due to not having enough stats. This game’s setting and tone is also one that rather rare compared to most popular IFs out there. It’s in a modern setting, no superpowers, no magic, just guns, blood, and steel. And HOLY ♥♥♥♥ is there a lot of it. From the main story to the side stories, be prepared to empty out magazine after magazine of hot lead, and spill the blood and guts of your enemies in various settings, such as building raids, encounters with the 3 letter agencies, and car chases(oh, so many car chases). You’re running around with a group of killers led by psychopaths going up against mobsters. There is a lot of shooting to do. While you won’t manage stats as much in this game, be prepared to manage your inventory, as you have a fully fleshed out in game store with primary, secondary, and melee weapons (plus many attachments), different apparel/armor, a large pool of tactical equipment, and even vehicles for you to purchase and use. The store actually matters because your purchases can make your heists exponentially easier or increase survivability. This game even has a NG+ mode, hinting at the possibility of even more ludicrous heists using overpowered equipment that might cost you millions and adding lots of replay value. The characters are pretty good. I’ll admit I wasn’t particularly attached to them, but together they do feel like a crew and there are many options. You make a squad of 4 from 6 possible crew mates, allowing for at least 2 play-throughs with completely different teams. They do have their own stories but some I feel definitely get more fleshed out than others. The ones that do have a lot of depth are great, and I know Gabriel and Mouse are fan favorites. The characters have their own ideals and will be at each other’s teeth sometimes when someone crosses the line, allowing for interesting moral dilemmnas. One thing that isn’t really a criticism but something I feel is still worth mentioning is that this game is LONG. It’s about a million words. If you’re someone who likes to read whole books in one sitting, you will not be able to with this book. At times I felt burned out from reading so much, and wondering how close I was to the end. Imagine my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ surprise when I found out it was the first of three books in the series. Holy hell, I don’t know if I’m ready for this. I looked at the progress on Book 2 and it’s nearing a million words already. Jesus. I feel the need to point out that it’s a series because I did not know it was, and was quite disappointed when the end came so abruptly, so just be prepared folks. Slap on some GTA V music and get ready for some bruisin’ n cruisin’.
8/10

YOU LOVE ME FOR IT!
Such a fun and exciting story, I honestly couldn't stop reading! The characters are all uniquely written, and combined with the choices, the pacing and flow are just perfect. If I had to mention one downside, I'd say it's sometimes a bit unrealistic how much damage the characters can endure (so many bullets, cuts and bruises!). But other than that, it's pure action the whole way through. Also, the ROs and romance scenes were written so well. I can't wait for the sequel!
Epic! Still epic.
I've got to say, these kind of games are starting to grow on me. Would play another game like this.
Replayability is insane and the story alongside characters amazing! 100000/10 reccomend
Yeah, it's a great. Definitely one of the best choose you own adventure story/games. This is only book 1 out of 3 though. It's gonna take at least a few more years to have a completed trilogy.
