The world is separated into a few districts that are ruled by robots who run dictatorial factions but they are also trying their best to find and to obtain a soul. Defeating them will free up the humans that have been trapped and allows the player to progressively unlock different actions within the game. Unlike NecroDancer where your movement is expected to be with the beat, this game only asks you to perform your actions with the beat, while the movement is without restriction. The game can also be played with the "Freestyle" mode if you are not into the rhythm-based restrictions, though for playing as the game is intended, I have progressed as far as I can because it gets rather difficult. So I have not yet completed the game, and not sure if I will be able to in this default mode, because it gets rather difficult.
Gameplay
Top-down action game with a heavy emphasis on the beats and rhythm. The beats allow the player to hit the drum with the beat to cause damage, to dance with the rhythm, and perform some other progressively unlocked actions. There are different enemies that have different movements, attacks, and weaknesses, so it's all about learning about them individually and then figuring out how to deal with combinations of them on the screen when they are all coming after you. You basically have two health points, and getting one hit from an enemy or trap will make you lose the little boombox/radio called "Daisybell" that you are carrying. While not wearing this, you will die with one more hit. Daisybell becomes available to be picked up again on contact after a few set beats. Fortunately the game loads you right from your last checkpoint if you die. You will be able to pick up some extra shields or purchase some upgrades from time to time to increase survivability also. The overall game play is fairly simple until later when more actions are unlocked, and if you have trouble with getting the beat, you can turn on a circular display for the active beat around the character to tell you when you need to perform actions. It's probably easier just to see the game in action. I have a pretty uneventful stumbling example through the first section of the game in this video here, or you can watch some other videos available out there from other content creators. https://youtu.be/_TFzNkenBMM Do keep in mind that there are some sections of the game that seem to be intentionally designed as bottlenecks requiring rather skillful gameplay to get past. These areas may require many attempts before getting through and being able to advance to the next checkpoint. So behind the simplistic disguise is a rather difficult game, at least for me it is.
Controls
Works well with keyboard or controller.
Graphics
Pixel art, pretty simple in terms of colors and shading, but works reasonably well.
Music & Sounds
The beats and the music are really quite good, making playing this game to the beat and listening to the music rather pleasurable. It has old-school vibes, but it works well with the pixel art.
Audience
Not for everyone, but it's worth playing if you enjoy rhythm based games and are okay with having to dodge enemies left and right actively.
Pricing
The base price is $9.99, which is pretty good for the content here. If you don't want to pay so much and don't care about having a game on Steam, it can be yours for $6.69 on the game's itch.io store page.
Conclusion
BOY BEATS WORLD is a well-made indie rhythm-based action game but has a limited audience due to its choice of appearances and also the heavy emphasis on the rhythm-based gameplay. Check out the game if you are interested by looking at some of the videos available and look through some of the critique. It's pretty good overall and if the price is right for you. BOY BEATS WORLD is a rhythm based action adventure game with simple mechanics but enough going on that it adds a refreshing amount of depth to the gameplay. You have to dodge waves of enemies and their attacks as you attempt to free the remaining 6 humans alive in the world in a post-apocalyptic world where robots have taken over by battling them with the power of music. As you progress through the game, you'll unlock new beats and new mechanics to use to enhance your gameplay and keep it refreshing, hitting actions on beat to dance, dodge, and damage enemies all while making sure you're matching the tempo and staying alive. With a variety of different enemies and attack patterns between each new area, it feels rewarding and fun to progress through each zone, acquiring new abilities and songs while at it. In comparison to other action-rhythm games such as Crypt of the Necrodancer or Cadence of Hyrule, the game does not limit your movement or attacks as much. You're free to move in whatever direction you wish, whenever you want, and dodge enemy attacks as skillfully as you want. While this leads to a less difficult experience, it's a nice alternative to having to choose between running away and attacking, as kiting enemies and grouping up mobs of robots to attack them simultaneously is a great strategy when dealing with new enemies not yet encountered. The difficulty isn't too harsh on the player, your boombox Daisybell acts as a shield which can be recharged when picked up after being damaged, so if you're skilled enough, you'll be able to get through any fight without too much hassle. Although, you respawn at a previous checkpoint if you manage to die, a mechanic which I always welcome as it doesn't punish the player too much for failing to beat an enemy. And for those new to the genre, the game even includes accessibility options, such as adding a visual beat indicator to make hitting those crisp beats just a little bit easier. Boss fights are fairly challenging, with new mechanics and attacks opening up as you lower their healthbars, leading to interesting fights and surprises that might catch the player off guard, such as different laser patterns, summoning familiars and mobs to fight for them, or even detaching their own head to act as a separate enemy you'll have to keep track of. The graphics of the game are a simplistic pixel-based design, but the colours and styling add enough flair to keep it visually attractive and engaging to look at. The audio is absolutely fantastic, which should be expected from a rhythm based game. It's responsive, providing great feedback for the player when they hit or miss beats, with a fantastic soundtrack and song list to pair along with it. Overall, it's a fairy challenging but enjoyable experience for any fan of rhythm-based gameplay, and possibly a nice entry-point for those who have not yet experienced a genre like this, while still wanting a fresh action-adventure type feel. I'm looking forward to what the developer has in store for the future, as this has been a fantastic first impression!
BOY BEATS WORLD

Introduction
I love rhythm-driven games. But this is the first time I played a Top-down action game with Rhythm! This was a new & fresh experience. I surely had a lot of fun playing it! Without any further ado, let’s jump right into the review!
Boom Boom!

Storyline
The game takes place on our planet Earth. But the only difference is that humans are almost extinct. Robots have overthrown the humans & made Earth their playground. You play as a human who is tasked with saving Earth. You harness the power of your drum & use it to destroy the robots with your beats. Can you manage to successfully launch an offensive against the robots or will you join your fallen allies in their graves?
Gameplay
Your main aim is to hit your drum as per the rhythm to cause damage to the enemies, dance to the beat & a few other actions. This might sound a bit too simple, but trust me, it isn’t. There are different enemies with completely different stats. You will need to remember how to defeat each of the type & also be ready to throw out different combinations of attacks when you get attacked by multiple types at once. The game becomes progressively harder. You aren’t familiar with the rhythm-beat gameplay style & finding it hard to play? That’s not a problem since the developers gotchu! There’s a free-style option where you don’t need to play as per the beat hence giving you more freedom to play & making the game a bit easier. You basically have only 2 HP. The first time you get hit, Daisybell (A boombox that you are carrying around. That boombox is like a guide for you) falls off. The next hit will kill you. But you can pick up Daisybell after a few beats. There are a few abilities that you can unlock & purchase that will aid you throughout your adventure. The only thing that was a bit too odd in this game was that they developers were brave enough to not include a tutorial. If a person were familiar with these types of games, they’d know what to do & where to go. I was new to this. I had no clue what to do & it took me a while to figure it out. It would’ve been cool if they added a tutorial ☹.
Graphics & Audio
Oh my god, I love pixel art! I don’t know why, but they make the games look very cute! This is game is such a visual pleasure. Although it starts off as a colorless & grim game, it develops into a very colorful & vibrant experience. An easy 10/10 in this segment. The soundtracks play a very vital role in this game. So, the developers ensured that it stays up to the mark!
Pros

Very vibrant & colorful visuals. Pixel art is just love!
Beautifully designed sound tracks.
A very unique gameplay.
A carefully woven storyline that is intriguing.

Cons
Surprisingly, I found no problems with this game. I got not bugs or glitches too.(I mean, I didn’t but you might. My playthrough was smooth.)
Conclusion
This game might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is worth a try. I had fun while I was playing it. But yes, it becomes pretty difficult the more you play it. A fresh experience! Funny thing though. The game is $9.99 on Steam but $6.69 on Itch.io. Yes, the game is worth the price. But, if you want to save a bit of moolah, then I’d recommend buying it on Itch.io. Reviewer: Midplayz Boom boom boom boom….I want you in my room 🥺 Ratings: 9.5/10 Please follow United Critics for more quality reviews.
Very excited! I have been waiting for this game for about 5 years. Finally got to play it and I can say that I really enjoyed the gameplay as well the soundtrack. The boss fights are awesome. Really well done. Thanks Duckbridge for this super cool game.
An enjoyable journey filled with great electro music and fun rhythm battling in real-time as you move about the world. Filled with witty humor and clever writing too , as you would expect from a Duckbridge game :)
I am so glad I discovered this game (thanks to Pursuing Pixels). I was only intending to play it for 5 minutes on my first sitting, but 3 hours later, I couldn't put it down. I
So far, I'm really interested in what this game has in store. The rhythm based mechanics are very unique and offer an experience I don't think I've seen anywhere else. The humor in the dialogue is also something to praise, as it keeps you talking to every character just to see what little goofy comment they'll make. You should definitely try it out if you enjoy rhythm games, banger music, and creative rpg-like worlds.
Quite innovative, worth a try. Runs well on Linux.
Worth it just for the OST!
An addictive bite-sized action/adventure/rhythm game. It blends the genres seamlessly and the first game to really nail rhythm based combat since Crypt of the Necrodancer. Oh yea, and the dialogue is consistently laugh out loud funny as well as perceptive in its commentary on the state of modern labor.
