Playing status: finished the game
Intro
Rescue Team 5 is a time management game where you have to rescue all humans and animals on the level. Some levels will require you to finish within a time limit, some will let you take your time to clear. It offers 50 levels in varying difficulty. Pros: - 50 levels Cons: - The three-star indicator is not clear enough if you don't know where to look Specs Intel Core i5-9300H 2.40GHz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
Should you buy this game?
Yes. If you like time management games, buy this game. People who don't like to get rushed might not like it though since some levels have a time limit.

In-Depth Review

Visuals
Just like other time management games, Rescue Team 5 is shown in a top-down view. Buildings and objects look realistic despite their unusual size to make use of the gameplay. Both environment and UI are simple enough to give most information with fewer texts. It looks neat in the eye, especially if you are just craving some action.
The Game
Gameplay It might be obvious from the title, but in Rescue Team 5, your task is to rescue both people and animals that require saving. Some of them will fall in a landslide, deserted on a certain island, or simply being surrounded by boulders. You need to build some buildings to gather enough resources to save them, whether by demolishing boulders or sending a vehicle. A tutorial is provided at the beginning of the game although it wasn't until I played a few levels before I completely understood how it works. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2530249241 The game gives you the freedom in finishing the objectives in any order that you want. You are given several tasks at each level, and each survivor is placed far from the other. Some survivors can also be reached from more than one path, allowing you to choose the most efficient one to rescue them. While it doesn't affect much if you play casually, people who aimed for three stars rating in each level have to pay attention to this order. Timed Levels Some levels will require you to do a certain action within a time limit. This can prove to be challenging at first since you need to utilize your resources efficiently. I admit that it took me a few retries to finish these levels, although I couldn't imagine how long it will take me if I aimed for 3 stars. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2530249690 Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 6.7h. I tried to aim 3 stars in all levels at first, although I ended up giving up after playing 9 levels. It's just not fun to keep on retrying a level just to figure out the right order to finish the level efficiently. Although I didn't aim for 3 stars, I still managed to get a few of them, especially near the end of the game. The difficulty levels remain similar until the end, except for the timed levels. Problems Sometimes it's hard to know your starting location in each level despite the game showing a huge green circle in your initial location. The three-star indicator is also unclear if you don't know where to look.
Conclusion
Rescue Team 5 is one of those games that is implemented nicely from a simple concept. It was fun to solve all levels, figuring out the right order to save the survivors based on the resources that are given. Although it might feel a bit repetitive sometimes, I didn't mind with it at all, especially with the game giving some "challenge" levels that require you to finish it within a time limit.
Short version: 73%
Rescue Team 5 continues right where the previous game left off. The lack of story is still a sore point, but the level design and the refined time-manager gameplay work together well.
Long version:
After Rescue Team 4 went back to the roots of the series by removing everything that was not part of the core gameplay, this follow-up chose the “expansion disk” route by putting most of its focus on the level design. Time management games are always similar: we get a few workers who gather some resources to remove obstacles and build production buildings (plus to save some helpless citizens here, since we are playing as rescue workers, after all). This simple formula needs interesting level layouts to keep the player away from boredom, and this is where Rescue Team 5 shines throughout all of its 50 stages. It eliminates most of the downtime by always providing something to do. Even the levels are a bit unpredictable thanks to a new mechanic that lets us build, demolish, and rebuild production buildings. This is a double-edged sword, as timed mode can quickly turn into frantic trial and error, but relaxed mode suddenly has a certain strategic aspect that elevates Rescue Team 5 above many of its competitors. If only there were some kind of story to go with it, RT5 could have been a must-have among time management fans—still, as it is, the game provides ample fun for those who like these games for their mechanics.
i like alawar games and i like time management games. thing is, i like to play levels in my own pace, i dont care about achievements or gold stars but eg sometimes i like to max out all buildings, sometimes im lazy to wait around for that. these type of games i find relaxing and entertaining. i dont care about the not-so-attractive graphics or the one bug but i really hate that the game rushes me. i know, its TIME management, still, if i wanted an adrenalin rush, id play an another genre. dont rush me, if im slow deny me those ah-so-coveted gold stars. with this genre i expect relaxation not frustration. so, unfortunately i wont finish this game, and because of the above i cant recommend it. on the other hand, if you dont mind trying a level again (andagainandagain) because the game kills your rescuees, it might be just for you. update1 Mia, a fellow steam user brought to my attention that this game has a 'relaxed mode', where you dont have to play against the timer. im not sure the game had this feature before, quite possibly it did and i skipped it the clever guy i am. so thanks, and though it wont be my favourite time management game, my rating is changed to recommended. update2 and im getting senile and i forgot why i actually disliked this game, i started again (no steam cloud) and at about the 12th map i remembered: fire kills my rescuees. so sorry Mia, changed back to not recommended.
Who knew my crippling caffeine addiction would save lives? Played this Rescue Team during my lunch break and now my boss thinks that Im a tactical genius. 10/10, would fight tsunamis with a clipboard again!

Starts out fairly casual and fun, though some levels are a puzzle where you can fail on your first action. One of these levels required about 5 or 6 actions to be carried out in a specific order. Sometimes the game will tell you to do a certain thing early on in a level and if you do it when it tells you to, you'll fail. Even though there looks like there is a fairly standard multitasking game time limit, you can let the timer run out and you'll still get a star and unlock the next level if you complete all the requirements. So it's not worth worrying about, untill... ...you hit level 11, and that all changes. You need to rescue people from a fire before they get burned. On my third try I thought I had cracked it, and only had 1 person left to rescue. The fire didn't look that close, but then the game flashed up the box to say I had failed. It really didn't look like I was close to failure at all. So basically, after a moderate introduction, the difficulty curve becomes a wall and the on-screen threat does not accuratly indicate how well you are doing. The game just suddenly becomes stupidly hard out of nowhere, and punishes you in an unfair way.
An alright time management clear the road type of game with 50 levels to play in total. As the title of the game implies your goal is mainly to rescue people and animals. An annoying thing about is that even if you play in relaxed (non timed) mode there is a few levels with fire where you will still be kinda timed as if you don't do certain tasks in time you will be blocked from progressing. Also building upgrades feel really unsatisfying. If feels like you don't really get quite enough extra resources for the amount they cost (being a +10 instead of +5 would be better in my opinion). Other than that it was a pleasant experience. It is by far not the best game of this genre but still perfectly playable without regretting your time with it. Sadly I don't own or have played the rest of the games from this series so I can't compare them. Has issues when tabbing out/in windowed mode when running it with Proton (7.0-3), but if you don't tab out and leave the game in fullscreen it runs perfectly fine.
I've just requested a refund for this game because level 12 is so unreasonably difficult that from my perspective, it appears to be impassable. To be completely fair, evidence found on the interwebs indicates that advancing past level 12 has been done; but here's why -- unlike those determined souls -- i gave up trying and asked for my money back: This level features a fire that threatens several citizens as it spreads; you can't extinguish it, you can only rush to helicopter the people to safety. As implemented, the timing and/or strategy demands of this task seem unreasonably high; so much so that i was not only unable to succeed, i was also unable to enjoy trying. No problem, right? Just take a low star rating and move on, right? Wrong: you can't proceed to level 13 if the fire reaches the people on level 12 (which, for me, it did every time). In over a decade of playing time management games, this is the first time i have encountered such an impasse. The way i see it, i could spend hours failing this task over and over trying to get past it, but then what? Will the remaining 2/3 of the game be increasingly MORE difficult and joyless? Count me out. On a side note, one player posted a discussion asking if level 12 was bugged, and the developer responded that one needed to "restore [the] Fire Department and also save a firefighter." But... neither of those things is present on level 12.
Having played almost all of the 12 Labours, Gnomes Garden and Lost Artifact games, it's fair to say I'm a fan of the time management genre. Rescue Team 5 sadly however, is a hard pass. First off, while there are no Steam achievements, there are in-game achievements, most of these are earned as part of your natural progression, and are unmissable, which kind of makes them pointless, there are however a few which are level specific challenges. Personally I think they all should have been. My second issue is with the score that you are awarded when completing a level, or rather the way the score is calculated. Rather than being awarded a higher score for being faster on a level, you are awarded a greater score for taking longer and collecting more resources. I find this odd given it is a time management game where the aim is to do set tasks in a certain time to obtain 3 stars..., There is also no leaderboards so unless posting screen caps to challenge friends, a score is meaningless. My biggest issue with the game however is that most levels are very hard, now that by itself is fine, I mean I've earned enough beat the dev achievements playing 12 Labours titles to relish a challenge. The difficulty here, in most levels means that there is only 1 solution to a level, you can't play the game your way and find your own solution, there is more often than not only one solution. As such you might as well just follow a video tutorial to the letter to avoid hours upon hours of frustration, and that takes away the point of playing the game. You might as well go watch a YouTube video playlist of all the levels rather than actually play it, as that's exactly what you will likely end up doing anyway... unless you are as stubborn as me. Only recommended to fans of the genre looking for a serious challenge...
Another simple time waster, you actually need a little bit strategy here but it would be to much to call it challenge :) Could be enjoyable in short bursts.
