Bad Game. Horrible soundtrack, and you cannot see a damn thing on the screen for a proper gameplay. Bad Dev. Thomas Christof doesn't even bother to reply to his early Greenlight supporters and purchasers on forums/Desura/Email, totally ignoring them. Good review.
Very basic twin stick shooter with somewhat intriguing concept yet horrible execution to say at least. Gameplay The game has one and only play mode. You shoot waves of squares that simply fly around you in order to gain points which you then spend on guns and gun upgrades inbetween the waves. There's an aspect of building the ship. You need to expand the size of your ship for every new gun you want to attach making you bigger target and sacrifice your movement speed in exchange for better firepower. If enemy hits your base section, it's game over. If it hits expanded parts, you lose only the guns attached to that part. This is interesting on paper yet you'll find out right after few games that it's more efficient to just keep your ship small with one gun you continually upgrade. Concept of buying upgrades and new guns is also very much undermined by the fact all guns are very weak against the enemies so you're basically waiting for power-up so you can kill something. Graphics Visual presentation of this game is at least atrocious. Every graphical part of this game seems what you would expect from very first InDev version of a game. Your ship is square, your enemies are square. Background seems to be squares. These graphics would be low for a flash or a mobile game. Everything feels lazy and undone. This theme is acompanied by visual effects that are beyond annoying. Half of the time you won't even see what's happening on screen. And this is game focused on precision. Imagine playing Counter-Strike with screen going bright white every few sec... oh wait. Overall The game is sold for a very low price of 2€ yet you won't get any content worth that much. If this was free flash game on a site like Newgrounds or Kongregate, it would still have a low score at best. The one positive thing is soundtrack which is very catchy but artists provided the music are not even credited? Shame. Thumb down.
BoxesWithGuns is a terrible arcadey shooter and it's not worth your money nor your time. All I can say about this game is this: Imagine playing a game like Geometry Wars, but there's MLG parody video flashes, you don't control the fire and you move like you're on ice. The music is also incredibly annoying. Everything mixed together made quit the game after the 10 minutes. Now you might think that if I quit after such a short time I didn't play enough to say about this game, but the reality is there is nothing after the first level. It's an endless game and every level is the same stuff forever. The game is boring and the gameplay the main selling point is absolutely atrocious. My honest suggestion is just go buy something else with your 2 dollars, cause this game is not worth it. You can't see a damn thing on the screen. The soundtrack is bland, the game is bland, and you get bored after 10 minutes. Yeah, no. Just pass.
You build a ship out of boxes to shoot snakes built out of boxes for as long as you can for a high score. If it seems like it would get old pretty fast... you'd be spot on.
It's a shoot 'em up but done about as poorly as possible. The controls are terrible, the music is worse, the light show is enough to make you sick, and you are literally represented by a box "ship". This is most definitely not worth your time or dime.
The worst twin stick shooter I've ever played. The gameplay is probably good, but I couldn't get to see it because as soon as I got through the main menu (which is really bad, you have to guess your way through) I was attacked by the colours, flares, explosions - simply everything that can make the experience worse. Most of the time you can't see a thing, the music is ♥♥♥♥♥♥, the progress is slow - just don't buy this game. Oh, one little tip: setting all the graphics to low makes it a bit more playable, but still not enough to actually be decent.
my eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It does seem to me many reviewers have never experienced Jeff Minter Llamasoft type of psychedelic games and are therefore missing the point entirely. Game is simple and does not have a ton of variation. Shoot boxes, get cash, upgrade. try to survive. rinse and repeat. Variation? Complex game mechanics? Nope. not much at all: you can either upgrade your gun contantly or build more modules and increase firepower that way is the biggest variation. Put simple: Don't buy this if you are expecting a full fledged game within. Buy it if you want a pscychedelic experience. As such it is actually very good. Jeff is probably playing this himself.
