Played the first Borderlands back when it first came out in 2009 on PS3. Back then I didn't watch game trailers or follow any hype for games. Friends told me it was a Role Playing Game with guns. Grabbed it the night it came out and didn't go to bed until early in the morning. Nearly called in sick at my job. I enjoy playing BL1 and BL2 as they are the most fun. Yeah sure, BL3 and BL4 are out but there is something I can't put my finger on when playing the older titles. I installed mods for BL1 for the first time and currently feel like I am playing the game again for the first time since it was released.
Returning to this game 16 years later. Does it actually hold up?
Coming from a longtime Borderlands fan... only buy this on sale. I’ll be completely transparent. I have a lot of nostalgia for this series. Borderlands was one of the first games I played with friends, exploring an open world full of loot, fighting bosses, and experiencing it together. I remember playing Call of Duty every single day after school, and Borderlands was the game that finally pulled me away from that, and I feel like that really matters. But coming back to it 16 years later, I realized there’s a lot about this game that feels very generic.
The Good
• The loot is still special. It makes getting kills and progressing feel fun and rewarding. There’s something genuinely unique about Borderlands loot. • The game is funny. The crude humor holds up, and I found myself laughing again at moments I got to re-experience. • It still feels like a solid first-person shooter. Movement, mantling, and general gameplay all feel good. • The skill system isn’t overwhelming. It’s nice having clear direction instead of too many choices. • The characters are classics. They feel distinct and make you want to try different classes. • Bosses are unique and memorable. • Extremely fun with friends. Better with other people, but still playable solo.
The Not So Good
• Controls feel off. Sensitivity is too fast, even at the lowest setting. • No FOV slider. Very noticeable by modern standards (it personally really bugged me). • Mission structure is repetitive. Go here, do this, kill that, come back, repeat.
TLDR
It’s hard for me to review this game because of nostalgia, but I personally think it still holds up. That said, a lot of it feels dated, especially the mission design and settings. If you’re curious or have nostalgia for it, it’s worth trying. Otherwise, there are better modern options.
Verdict
☐ Skip it ☑ Buy it on sale ☐ Worth it at full price
Steam Roulette (Episode 94) This is a review based on coming back to the game 16 years later, and I only returned because of my Steam Roulette series. My rules: play for at least 1 hour and leave a brutally honest review. At the end of the day, this is just my opinion. Take it or leave it.
this game is hella fun to me, and if you like this, I'd recommend Doom (2016) or ULTRAKILL
Gearbox Software's "Borderlands" was originally released on October 20, 2009, for consoles, and was later released for PC on October 26. Ever since, it has become one of the most popular and influential First-Person Shooters in the gaming industry. Unfortunately, after playing this game for the first time with no prior history, I don't think I'll be planning on coming back to it again. For me, Borderlands' greatest sin is that [b ]it's just so boring. If you're familiar with side quests in big-budget games, then you'll probably know that many of them involve going to a place, retrieving something, and then heading back. Now imagine playing a game where that is the entire gameplay loop, where you're expected to do that for the next 15-20 hours. That's Borderlands' story campaign, and it's just as mind-numbing as it sounds. This game is an RPG, so there are skill trees and various forms of stat building to be had here. Unfortunately, most of it ends up being paper-thin. The game gives way more money (both through missions and the many chest pickups scattered around the world) than you'll ever know what to do with, which means buying new guns, armor, and ammo becomes trivial. Whenever I ran out of bullets for my sniper rifle, I just went back to the ammo vending machine and stocked up again. I did that as many times as I needed to, and I never suffered any consequences. Deciding which equipment to go with usually just boils down to picking the one with the bigger number. I was able to get through 80% of this game without even upgrading the ammo capacity of my weapon of choice. The game is just that easy and mindless to play. As I was playing this game, I got the realization that maybe it would be more tolerable if I were playing co-op with some friends. And yeah, sure, I think I would've had a more favorable opinion had I convinced some of mine to join me, but none of them owned the game themselves, and I doubt we would've been able to finish the entire story campaign. Regardless, if a game presents a single-player option, then it should still be fun and engaging on its own, so I don't think that's a good defense. In conclusion, I'm just glad that I finally got this game over with. This makes me worried for Borderlands 2, so hopefully that entry can improve on the formula.
Borderlands is a great time, with the best gunplay and build diversity in the series. I also love the space frontier setting. The story is pretty good, although mostly reading text, which is not what most people playing a looter shooter care about. The wasteland planet atmosphere is incredible here, and yeah it's not colorful or vibrant but that's the point- Pandora is a frontier planet which is mostly a wasteland. It's funny, albeit very dark. Some of the jokes are more funny than others, but humor is a matter of taste, and not everyone likes the flavor here. The people have very few morals but you would too if you were on Pandora.
