From a dev perspective this game was literally revolutionary!! Why? tech 5 was the last engine Carmack worked on. For Rage he invented megatextures. Instead of texture tiles being reused ad infinitum in Rage it's one giant unique texture for the entire environment. It is one giant canvas artist could paint on directly. It is a pre-baked texture map hundreds of thousands of pixels wide. Only the tiles you can see are streamed into memory and as the player moves the engine predicts and fills in the rest. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ magic. While this didn't set an industry standard it was revolutionary and experimental, far ahead of its time. In terms of the actual gameplay you have to assess this game like you would assess Hendrix on guitar, of course everyone can sound like Hendrix now, but in his day, no one could. Open-word, id-style shooting, vehicle combat, crafting, minigames etc. was rare, while they didn't pioneer the mash-up they certainly did something no one else did. The world is beautiful, the attention to detail is astounding, the way water falls on you standing under it, the sky, the dust kicked up when NPCs are walking, the dust blowing on the ground, the soundscape, just incredible and rich. Of course you can run through the story quick that is any game, but if you really explore this game, and not race to finish--there is plenty to do, all the vehicle up-grades, sewer quest, and main-quest cobbled together make the game interesting. Just the mini card game in the bar I stuck in for hours!
3 hours with patches, updates and external Programs trying to get this thing to run at 144fps, my Monitor is 240hz i didnt even bother with that. It really broke my balls, ive played a lot of these 10+ year old games on my pc and they all need tweaking but it works out halfway stable in the end. But this game forced me to give up, almost 4hours to set up these old games is too long, i tried all them guide fixes on steam, installing id5tweaker etc. Either its not running stable, the memory fills up in 3 min even thought thats literally impossible with my hardware or once that was dealt with just random ass crashes when switching zones, blackscreens in vehicles and buildings - no matter how good this game was this is not worth it. Dont be discouraged from trying it yourself if you know about this stuff but i assumed i knew aswell.
Unplayable on Windows 11, even optimizing with ID5 tweaker it crashes constantly with "out of memory" errors while switching zones and opening the menu. Sometimes it has graphical artifacts as black screens and blood turning white for some reason. DO NOT BUY.
Rage is a great linear shooter trapped inside an open-world game. Past the empty roads are detailed levels built around set pieces, with clear layouts that intentionally loop around to avoid backtracking. The hub cities feel alive, filled with great performances from voiced characters who react to your progress throughout the game. The gunplay is fun too, especially once later enemies push you to experiment with different weapons and ammo types. Unfortunately, the side quests, errands, and races keep interrupting everything the game does best. It starts slow and ends flat, but the middle has some of the best linear level design of its era.
I mean, I've played it for over 600 hours and written a guide for it... can you smell the enthusiasm? It's one part wingstick oil, one part mutant blood spatter, one part exhaust fumes, and one part sweating inside this heavy freaking armor. Yeah, smells like VICTORY.
Great Game Plot/Story line -- Start out with Natural Level -- Keep playing until you Win at least twice in a row -- Go to the next level -- Do the same thing on the next level -- Don't just play the game - be part of the game -- I've played for 342 hours and love each level I am on. Have FUN!!
Disclaimer: this is from an ultra nigthmare playthrough Boy this game didnt age well. some, if not most people, would say the game wasnt even any good to begin with. and maybe theyre right. i remember when this game came out, i liked it. alot actually. but maybe it was just my ID fanboy being blind to the problems. i played through the game at least 2 times completely over the years, now i came back for the achievements. AND MAN it was quite the struggle. Even now i felt like "you know what, this game is pretty fun, its cool ID tried something else." But roughly half way through, the game made its name justice. Not only is the gameplay extremely repetetive (i know how that sounds, given its a ID shooter), but the mechanics are completely trash. its like the whole thing isnt even an ID game to begin with. idrk WHERE to begin, honestly... The movement is extremely muddy. you cant really do ANYTHING... ofc you can sprint for like 5 seconds, GREAT. yea you can "strafe" jump... in a straight line, granted. takes awhile to get used to and its pretty fun, truth be told. You CANT, on the other hand, even crouch jump. imagine that! CANNOT CROUCH JUMP to get over the tiniest ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ obstackles. You cant really go ANYWHERE its like this strange "open tube" concept. kinda like the new god of war games. semi open world, but not really even that. there is quick travel, between (2!) main bases... like... great??? but they are only like 20 seconds away from one another IF THAT.... but go anywhere else, means you ALWAYS get attacked by enemy cars, wich gets old REALLY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fast. The whole bucket list of races you have to win is .... idk... a nuisance. may very well not even be there, but whatever. It could even be kinda fun if these ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ass cars would be managable to drive around. everything is just so unresponsive and slippery... ugh i hate it so much. up until the last 3rd of the game, the car you get there is honestly pretty dope. The fact you have to clear these ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tunnels multiple times is also very annoying and repetetive. Idk what they were thinking with these mutants honestly. their AI is so aids to deal with. why do they have these faulter animations??? FOR WHAT RREASON!? YOU CANT EVEN QUICKSWITCH WEAPONS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT!!! i swear to god, the pop rockets from the shotgun (choice nr one sadly to deal with the armored and poison variants) is SO!♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!BAD! ive seen these projectiles (and even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rockets) fly past enemies more than i am willing to admit. they just pass through them. and this would be ok to deal with, if they had any considerable splash damage at all. but they dont. the weapons feel mostly underwhealming. the sniper is ok, even the pistol with the big boy bullets in them is kinda cool and honestly useful until the end. yet idk how you can make a shotgun bad in an ID game but here we are. The MG is total ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ useless against MOST enemies, it pretty much only serves as income at vendors when you sell its ammo you pick up. the authority smg is worlds beyond it. the ammo variants are a cool concept, but changing them back and forth is a hussle, when you trigger the animation for a diff ammo type, like by accident you can luckily weapon switch out of, except for the nailgun... The animation from the nailgun takes the cake. i think it takes like at least 5 seconds to switch an ammo type. what the ♥♥♥♥ man!? i mean it is truly a coverbased shooter. and i ... am not ok with it lol. aim down sight, recoverable health... imagine we got a doom 4 like that. praise the lord this didnt happen. the level design is so idiotic also. the ammount of times entry and exit to a level are so close to one another is laughable. LIKE OK: take the well mission. you get down the wells, you fight your way through it and get the poison out of there. fine. but then litterally 10 meters away is the exit... from a ladder to a hatch INTO THE BASE. JUST ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GO THROUGH THAT NEXT TIME DIRECTLY?!?!?!?! and this literally happens 90% of the time. you somehow fight your way through a huge ass level but then end up at the entrance again.... OH AND THE CHARACTERS! i dislike most of them and how they act/move/gesticulate like pixar animations. i REALLY cant ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stand that. PLUS you cant skip dialogue (WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥) i mean you can, if you run away from the NPC and come back but... i mean really??? i am very glad that whatever they were trying here didnt pay off. (ofc rage 2 came out few years ago but ♥♥♥♥ that im not gonna bother)
One of the worst shooters out there.
Cant really say anything about the game itself, but its really styalized, the engine - idtech 5 makes wonders
