PEAK!!
So yeah Murder-Monkey with a damn good story 9.8/10 this is why I play video games. My rig is not very strong and the graphics and music were grand, the constant want to explore and find out more and encounter new enemies was fully organic and rewarding, and the story itself was damn good; mythic even. I fully admit I only know references to Journey to the West but I have a decent broadstrokes understanding of Buddhism and Daoism. That along with reading all of the guai lore entries got me along just fine and it really makes for a deep & damn good experience. One that does emulate mythology frankly. Were there declarations made by a character that sound absurd but left with no explanation in-story about why that made sense to everyone else? Yep that's about right just roll with it. If you don't know what the Kingdom of Punishment is that's on you. And on top of that the little short films we get as a reward for each end of chapter is a great idea that everything should do now. I was so excited and each was just rich with more content. It's not perfect. The environments are lush but don't feel like a game-oriented map design. If there's a cave with a secret it probably doesn't conveniently let out somewhere which is fine. What isn't great in exploration is the plethora of invisible walls rather than natural barriers. But that is a small bad-potato for the feast that is the production for each map and all its contents. It is decidedly NOT a soulsborne game which is just fine not everything should be. I'd argue it's closer in gameplay loop to DMC or Bayonetta or any other spectacle-fighter type. the combat and the ability trees are alltight and reward the getting-gud gamer but there's not much variety to be had in the basic combat it all has to rely on and I would like to teach this monkey that he could just baseball bat the staff for one move instead of that third fancy pass-behind-the-back bit i swear. But this is kung fu land and so kung-fu staff moves will be in full swing so adapt to it. What is more difficult to adapt to is that the abilities are more conditional than they let on and are inconsistent in their effect. I can Iron-Monkey my way out of a gigantic beetle-monster falling on me but one really angry guy can knock me out of it apparently so that anger adds 16 tons more newtons I suppose. One thing I do think thematically appropriate is that one can change build at will and I did a couple of times. Wukong may have been mighty but flexibility and cunning wins him the day quite a bit and I always felt rewarded for understanding a trick that a boss would be vulnerable to. That still never really makes it necessarily easy. The game doesn't let you off for having all the tricks, the most important fights require you to have your bread and butter down and even occasionally mock you for attempting some tactics its great. That end fight is so delightfully cheeky on that front. TL;DR Damn good combat, damn good production value on all fronts, I will be 100%ing.
