What a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insane story. I put off the entire series as I was convinced that it would be something not worth playing, I was wrong. This was an insanely enjoyable experience.
Black Mesa offers a faithful and enhanced experience compare to the original game Half Life with epic soundtrack , brutal gunfight and great boss - fighting experience , but still a puzzles in this game is pretty hard compares to the original source => 9/10 : Would recommend
10/10
Hot take: I prefer this over Half-Life.
Black Mesa: The Gold Standard for Fan-Made Remakes

TL;DR
Black Mesa is far more than Half-Life with better graphics. Crowbar Collective modernized its combat and environments, expanded its storytelling, and completely reimagined its most controversial chapters without losing what made the original special. The combat can occasionally feel dated, Source still has some quirks, and parts of Xen last longer than they should. Those are minor complaints compared to how much this game gets right. 9.5/10: An incredible remake that stands comfortably alongside the game that inspired it.

Gameplay & Level Design
Black Mesa retains the old-school structure that makes Half-Life so enjoyable. There are no skill trees or rarity systems. You explore, solve environmental puzzles, find increasingly powerful weapons, and survive whatever the facility throws at you next. The arsenal is excellent because nearly every weapon has a purpose. Shotguns dominate up close, explosives handle groups, conventional firearms cover most encounters, and experimental weapons become increasingly ridiculous. Limited ammunition also encourages regularly switching between them. Combat is fast, challenging, and refreshingly straightforward. HECU Marines are especially enjoyable to fight because they are aggressive and force you to keep moving. Alien enemies require different approaches, while combat, exploration, platforming, physics puzzles, and scripted events keep the campaign varied. There are some rough edges. Enemy behavior can be strange, Source-engine platforming remains awkward, and certain encounters become chaotic rather than intelligently difficult.

Black Mesa Research Facility
The facility itself is one of the game's greatest achievements. Laboratories, offices, industrial complexes, rail systems, military-controlled sections, and the surrounding desert all feel like parts of one enormous facility rather than disconnected FPS levels. The story also unfolds naturally around you. Scientists argue, guards fight for their lives, military forces move in, aliens become increasingly dangerous, and the facility gradually collapses into chaos. Environmental details, conversations, and scripted sequences tell most of the story without constantly stopping the player for exposition. The world feels considerably more alive without becoming overloaded with explanation.

Xen
This is where Black Mesa stops feeling like a conventional remake. The original Half-Life's Xen was short, strange, and notoriously divisive. Crowbar Collective rebuilt the entire final portion into something dramatically larger and more ambitious. The first arrival on Xen is fantastic. Instead of simple floating islands, you enter a fully realized alien ecosystem filled with wildlife, enormous landscapes, abandoned human equipment, alien technology, and some of the best environmental design in the game. It finally feels like somewhere Black Mesa scientists would have been desperate to study. Later chapters also expand the Vortigaunts and alien infrastructure, adding context that connects naturally with ideas explored later in the series. My main criticism is pacing. Xen is substantially longer here, and parts of Interloper repeat similar puzzles and combat encounters long enough for the novelty to wear off. Even so, I vastly prefer Black Mesa's interpretation of Xen. Turning the weakest portion of the original into one of the remake's defining features was a huge risk, and it worked.

Presentation & Sound
Black Mesa still runs on heavily modified Source technology, and some animations or assets reveal its age. Particularly demanding scenes can also expose the engine's limitations. That hardly stops the game from looking impressive. Lighting, particle effects, environmental detail, physics, and the sheer density of the facility create a fantastic atmosphere. Joel Nielsen's soundtrack is equally strong. Black Mesa knows when to let environmental sound carry a scene, but when the music appears during major battles or Xen, it can completely transform an encounter. For a project that began as a fan remake, the level of presentation is remarkable.

Final Thoughts
Black Mesa modernizes Half-Life without losing what made it special. The environments are larger, combat is more aggressive, characters are more expressive, and Xen has been almost completely reinvented, yet the journey still feels unmistakably like Half-Life. I would not call it a replacement for the 1998 original. Half-Life remains worth playing for its original design, pacing, atmosphere, and historical importance. Black Mesa should be experienced alongside it, not instead of it. Some encounters are rough, Source occasionally shows its age, and Xen could have been trimmed. None of that significantly detracts from what Crowbar Collective accomplished. This is not simply an impressive fan project. It is an exceptional game in its own right. 9.5/10: Nearly perfect. Absolutely recommended.
The fun factor cannot be ranked. This game just works if you let it. I can see why this game is iconic and this is a perfect example of what I consider a "They don't make them like they used to" type of game. Such a great game to be able to sit down and enjoy.
Just 100% the game. Hands down the most successful remake ever made. Now I gotta wait 10 more years for Operation Black Mesa to come out.
Из уважения к родоначальнику многих жанров и классике можно пробежать даже ньюфагам.
good remake of a good game
