Bioshock is a great game. TL;DR + Good story + Well-written characters + Excellent atmosphere + Good enough gameplay - The game is a little too long for the gameplay mechanics it provides, so near the end you're mostly driven by the desire to see how the story ends. My opinion on weapons and plasmids: Weapons There's a great variety of weapons and ammo types. The weapons unlock gradually, meaning that at the start you'll only have the wrench, and closer to the end you'll most likely have found all the other weapons. Since the game is a little stretched out, in my opinion, you'll have enough time to play with all of them. I mostly used 2–3 guns that I liked the most and only switched to the others when I had just unlocked them or ran out of ammo for my favorites. Speaking of ammo, I played on Hard difficulty (there are Easy, Medium, Hard, and Survivor). At the beginning I had some ammo issues, but they were manageable, and in the second half of the game you can use your ammo more or less carelessly. All weapons can be upgraded (2 upgrades per weapon) except the wrench and the camera, but the upgrades are limited. In my playthrough I was able to fully upgrade 4 out of the 6 upgradable weapons. The upgrades are different for each weapon. For example, you can upgrade the pistol's magazine size and the shotgun's fire rate, but not vice versa. However, there is also a common damage upgrade that applies to most weapons. Each upgradable weapon has three different ammo types. The damage difference between regular, armor-piercing, and anti-personnel ammo is very noticeable. You can use the camera to figure out which ammo types work best against which enemies, but generally speaking, anti-personnel ammo is good against humans, while armor-piercing ammo is good against robots and Big Daddies. The crossbow's regular bolts are good enough that you don't really have to bother. The wrench and the camera don't have any upgrades or ammo types, but the wrench's power can be boosted with passive effects. My opinion on the guns: 1. Revolver A good starting weapon. It's relatively accurate, and if you can land headshots, it deals good damage. 2. Machine Gun Great firepower, but the recoil is hard to control (although there's an upgrade that helps with that). It's good at close to medium range but lacks the accuracy to perform well at long range. 3. Shotgun A good close-range weapon, but the fire rate is slow enough that you'll often take damage in return if you don't manage to one-shot your target. Also, the electric buck ammo can stun some enemies, giving you enough time to fire another shot without getting hit. It was my Plan B weapon. 4. Grenade Launcher A solid weapon that deals noticeable damage, but I'm not a big fan because the rockets AoE can inflict self-damage. It's worth mentioning that the Proximity Mine ammo can be quite useful. I used it during the mission where you have to defend a Little Sister. 5. Chemical Thrower I only used it a couple of times. It seems to deal good damage, but I don't like how close you have to get to enemies. (It has an upgrade that increases its range, but I never upgraded it.) 6. Crossbow My favorite weapon. It's a shame that you get it the last. It definitely lacks fire rate, and it takes a while to reload (although it has a five-bolt magazine, Van Helsing style), but it can one-shot most human enemies from long range if you're good at landing headshots. Also, it's surprisingly effective against Big Daddies. Plasmids Plasmids are active abilities. Most of them are found throughout the world, although you can also buy them with ADAM. ADAM is the currency you receive by harvesting or rescuing Little Sisters. In my playthrough I rescued every Little Sister, and that gave me enough ADAM to buy every Health upgrade I came across. The point is that I didn't really buy many plasmids from the Gatherer's Garden. I mostly relied on the ones I found in the world. My opinion on the plasmids: 1. Cyclone Trap Used it once against a Big Daddy during the mission where you receive a random plasmid. It had zero effect. I can imagine it's more useful against human enemies. 2. Electro Bolt At the beginning it's a good stun ability against humans. It's also useful throughout the entire game because it can stun turrets. 3. Enrage Didn't use it. 4. Hypnotize Big Daddy Somewhat useful at the beginning, but it seems that a friendly Big Daddy won't attack enemies unless you attack first, even if they're already shooting at you. From the middle of the game onward I found it useless because the effect is temporary, so eventually the Big Daddy will unexpectedly turn hostile again. Although I believe there's some visual indication that the effect is about to wear off. 5. Incinerate! I only used it a couple of times, but honestly I feel like I should have used it more. It's essentially "free" damage that you can deal without spending ammo. 6. Insect Swarm Didn't use it. 7. Security Bullseye Used it once during the tutorial, but I think it's mostly useless because you can simply hack cameras and let security attack enemies instead. 8. Sonic Boom Didn't use it. 9. Target Dummy Used it once during the random plasmid effect. It could be useful for distracting enemies, but it becomes trickier to shoot them from a distance because of their movement toward the dummy. 10. Telekinesis Useful against rocket turrets, grenade-throwing enemies, and for retrieving items from places you can't otherwise reach. By the end of the game, though, I found it easier to kill grenade enemies with my own weapons than to throw their grenades back, since the reflected grenades deal laughable damage. 11. Winter Blast Used it a couple of times during the random plasmid effect. It seems powerful, but there's a downside I'll have to finish frozen enemies with the wrench.
if anyone is hesitating about purchasing this game, do not. The story is peak, the gameplay and choice of weapons is fun, and you can use your enviroment against ennemies, ex: using electricity in water to electrocute them, using fire against door blocked by ice to unblock them,...
