I am a 55 year old biker and trucker father, and probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 16 now. My son got this game for from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 12 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So i decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he let me borrow his controller. Me and my son then played in turns and I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my son many happy memories.
Nothing compared to its predecessor but by no means a bad game
Invisible War is a disappointing sequel; it had the impossible task of following one of the greatest PC games ever made, and unfortunately it just couldn't live up to that standard. It continues the story of the original; it has some interesting ideas and explores some compelling subjects (transhumanism, AI, the future of society); it still offers multiple ways to approach objectives, and it is somewhat more accessible as the FPS gameplay is more refined; there are also multiple factions you can join that change the story a bit; the atmosphere feels more sci-fi, which is not necessarily a bad thing. But everything else is a big step down: the levels are much smaller and less open-ended; the RPG mechanics are overly simplified, and the game feels more like a shooter; choices feel less meaningful; there's a universal ammo system, which just feels weird; the characters are less memorable; the story doesn't reach the same highs; and it has a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of loading screens, and they become old and annoying really fast. Invisible War pales in comparison to the original, and it feels cheaper and more streamlined in every way. I'd only recommend it to die-hard fans of the series, and only when it's on sale; otherwise, it can be skipped.
Will you get your nanites? DX:IW is totally playable without and with the Deus Ex 2 Visible Upgrade mod - I prefer the mod without the texture pack. For a pleasant playthrough without the mod you need to re-edit at least 1 of 2 files: For the resolution: user.ini @\Documents\Deus Ex - Invisible War FullscreenViewportY=1080 FullscreenViewportX=1920 For the hud: Default.ini @\Deus Ex Invisible War\System FOV__d=50 AssumedUIScreenWidth__d=640 AssumedUIScreenHeight__d=480 This last episode in the DX universe is a dumbed down console game that was originally released for the OG XBOX and ported for the PC. While IW may not be on a par with its predecessor, the story alone will not disappoint. Remember: your char was in a tube in DX. Funny feature of the engine or possibly it only emulates a Commodore Datasette: The long loadings will give you time to think over, medidate or whatever :DDD Overall, I enjoyed playing IW. Deus Ex chronology 2027 - Human Revolution (The Missing Link) 2027 - The Fall 2029 - Mankind Divided 2052 - Deus Ex 2072 - Invisible War -------- 2065 - Project Snowblind aka Deus Ex: Clan Wars
I liked it. Clearly made for the original XBOX hence many engine restrictions but despite of that still plays like Deus Ex game. I'd say it feels like downsized Deus Ex 1. You can have fun with your augmentations and weapons. Much more shoot em situations than in the first game or Human Revolution for example. Textures are great I bet it looked pretty impressive on release. Levels are small but you can still have fun going into ventilation shafts and such. Story is interesting enough to keep you playing. I'd say it is worth playing it at least once if you are a Deus Ex fan.
+Great game -Won't run on modern machines
Dont understand all the hate for this game. I think its great. Judging only this game and not looking at prequel I don't see anything to complain about besides obvious things like outdated graphics, UI, gameplay features etc. Its the same with any older game, it becomes outdated. This one has this post apocalyptic charm to it. But not in classic sense of post-apocalyptic world, this is more sanitized, almost militarized in a sense. Clean, quiet, yet somehow still dark and bleak. World feels empy but not too empty, sort of feels like a lock down. You find NPCs in key locations, sometimes roaming around high value areas. Tons of ways to play it, you can choose many different ways how to play around each area. This game doesn't propritize combat too much. Its a big step back from Deus Ex human revolution or mankind devided where it seems to be core of the gameplay. Every area has enemy that you need to deal with, almost on every single corner. In this game, your actions dictate if they are enemy to you or not. It feels like this game streamlines you a lot less into a certain outcome or a boss fight. I think for its time, it was ahead of the gaming industry. Tons of tools and kits to influence the gameplay. Steam says only 1h+ for play time, but I played it through atleast 8 times on original Xbox. Worked fine last time I tested it on modern PC (i7 4790k + GTX 1080) couple of years ago without any extra steps.
Bite-sized Deus Ex. Worse than the original, with less mechanical and narrative depth, smaller levels and shorter length (it took me about 20 hours). So why recommend this at all? Well, first, it does an okay job finishing the original plot. It does feel nice being able to predict some of the plot points by thinking of it all in terms of the characters introduced in the first game. Though some fan service was excessive and served little purpose. And I find the new art direction a bit too sci-fi, to the point that it loses its own identity. The second thing is that it's still an immersive sim, with a nice set of tools at your disposal. Levels are smaller, so the tasks are more "compressed", in a sense that there is less emergent freedom, but sometimes it feels more streamlined, and not always in a bad way. You can do less then before, but still more than most of other games, so that's cool. The plot structure itself also is quite malleable, so you can have fun following your own agenda and playing all the sides at once or fanatically sticking to a single one. The game does recognize it, which is not a bad feat for an old console game with fully voiced (short) dialogs. If you have some free time, then install Visible Upgrade mod and give it a try. You won't be amazed, but it's still Deus Ex, and we all know our chances of getting a new one that's at least as good as this.
IF you like mass effect, You'll love this. One of my favorites. Great storyline, great gameplay and good soundtrack.
This game doesn't function on modern windows. Steam shouldn't be allowed to sell such products.
